As you mentioned, 'Shepherd's Pie' is made with lamb, but here in the UK we also have 'Cottage Pie', which is made with beef and is a very similar dish 👍
I think one must grow up on lamb to prefer it. I really tried to enjoy its flavor but overall I like beef. 💕 I bet it would be delicious with game meats like venison or elk too.
Here in the Midwest, I was brought up on this, however, we did not Use a gravy base but rather a tomato base everything else is the same.... It's how I continue to make it today. An old family recipe, Now my ancestry is german I have no idea if the Tomato 🍅 base came from that region or not, But it's the only way we will eat it.
* Sauté some chopped onions. * Add ground lamb or beef. * Add dried parsley, dried thyme, dried rosemary, salt & pepper. * Stir & cook the meat until the meat is browned. * Add minced garlic & Worcestershire sauce. Cook the garlic for a minute. * Add flour & tomato paste. * Add some beef broth, frozen mixed peas, carrots & corn kernels. * Simmer the meat gravy until it is thick. * Peel, chop & boil potatoes until they are soft. * Drain the potatoes. Add butter, half & half, fresh parmesan cheese, garlic powder, salt, & pepper. * Mash the potatoes until smooth. * Pour the meat mixture into a casserole dish. * Top it with the cheesy mashed potatoes & bake. - Some times I just sprinkle shredded cheese over the meat & cover the top with plain mash potato. Enjoy ❤️ from 🇦🇺
Getting cold here in the UK so will be making this at some point this week. You got it just right too with how it stands on the plate and doesn’t just collapse into one big puddle. Also in the UK we add Worcestershire sauce to the gravy and meat mix for that extra little tang. Not too much but just enough to liven up the flavour.
That looked great. Like many here in the UK, I add Worcester sauce - but a personal preference is for an imperceptible pinch of curry powder to round it out. And I mix parsnips with the potato for extra sweetness.
I use parsnips in the mashed potatoes too and a bit of white cheddar cheese as well. My recipe is from a British lady who attends my Church. Hers is the absolutely best I've ever had. Thanks Trish! God bless you lady.
Omgosh…are you an Aussie too!! Finally someone that can back me up on Cottages and Shepherds 😂haha!! 🇦🇺👏✌️🥰 Too many discussions to mention but at least I’m correct here…! 👩🍳😝✌️👏
Thank you, making this for my friend who lost her mom a few days ago. She requested this and I never made it before so I hope her family enjoys it during such difficult time 🙏🏾
My son's and grandson have become addicted to making a Rue.. I have tried most of your recipes and they love the out come.. I haven't made a Shepherd Pie in yrs ..but I'm about to Level Up and get back to it with your recipe.
This recipe is banging, due to an autoimmune disorder, I used ground chicken and the regular peas and carrots(it's what I had available),but it was amazing. A new family favorite that we have at least twice a month. Thank you, as a Latina we eat a lot of rice and beans, this was amazing. Thank you sir! I appreciate you! ✌️
Looks amazing! Made something just like this yesterday, for Saint Patrick’s Day. Used lamb and did add a little Worcestershire sauce. In place of the whipped Russet potato, I used mashed sweet potatoes. Came out so good. After watching this, I’m gonna buy a round cast iron pan. Makes the cooking process much easier.
I’m going to make your recipe, it looks amazing especially adding the cheese in between the layers. Some recipes call for an egg in the potatoes to firm them up . I like the cheese option better. Thank you for sharing! Love your channel
That looks really good! I put a can of biscuits on bottom of pie pan, rolled out and i mix a can of creamed corn into the beef with other vegs. Turns out really good.
My man, AB. Happy New Year to you and the family. This looks amazing. I cannot wait to try it. I have heard of Shepherd’s pie but I never knew what it consisted of. An easy recipe and this looks nice and tasty and something that will stick to your ribs.
I’m in Midwest (St. Louis, MO) USA. I’m able to find a leg of lamb and/or lamb shoulder at my supermarket. I’ve never really worked with it but my plan is to braise and shred like pulled pork, then proceed with similar steps. Will be a great meal in this freezing cold weather. Thanks for the inspiration AB!
that looks yummy! i like fresh corn and fresh carrots for the level up. also i add some worcestershire sauce for the level up flavor. cheese was a nice touch that i’ll add. Thank you for this! 🫛🥕🧅🥔🌽🐄
This looks great, i love a lot of mashed potatoes in mine so you have the right amount. I am going to try your recipe minus a couple of veggies i only like certain kinds, you always make it look so easy. Have a good one. 👍
I attend a Sunday weekly ballroom/tango dance with about 25-40 people. We all potluck that day. I made your recipe of of shepherds pie last St. Patrick's Day and it was a big hit (I put some of my own tweaks) so much so that last week several of the dancers wanted to know if I was bringing it again this year. Of course I said yes. My tweaks: In the potatoes I added the usual butter and half/half but also added a generous portion of sour cream, some bacon bits, green onion and fresh thyme and rosemary Followed your basic recipe for the meat but also added smoked paprika and used Guinness instead of beef broth for the cook down. Put several bay leaves on the top too while it simmered. Thank you so much! Plus I like the jams you play while cooking.
Hiya A.B, try a little Marmite in your gravy not too much or you'll over power the taste, maybe 1 and half teaspoons, you don't have to if you don't want to, this is Choppy in Whitehaven, Cumbria, England
Ground lamb is often available at Aldi stores. 1lb package is typically $5.99-$6.49. I prefer the lamb because it tastes like all the shepherds pies that I enjoyed many times in the UK & Ireland. If you aren't familiar with the rich unique taste of lamb, mutton, etc. then stick with ground beef.
The fact that this video was posted yesterday & I looked up Shepards pie because I’m tired of eating the same old same old every week 😂 Right on time Ab
I love me some shepherds pie. I can easily get ground lamb that I prefer over ground beef. Snd for some reason my tummy likes the lamb better too. But I’ve had it made with other meats, even ground pork. You are making me hungry. Thanks for sharing your home cooking. 😊
This is one beautifu dish that some people call it cottage pie. and some people call it Shepard pie Happy wonderful new year A.B I really enjoy it cooked with ground chicken or ground turkey sometimes even a ground chicken,or Lamb 🎉🎉 cook with age cognac. Fresh Rosemary Vietnamese paprika oregano basil Italian seasoning 👌🏼💫😉 it's fun
LOVE these recipes and how to videos! Made and ate this and your southern style pinto beans recipe. I subscribed immediately! Thank you! My husband thanks you too!! 😁😆 Now to try another recipe from your list. 😋
I personally don't like lamb, but you said you have trouble finding it. I don't know if you have Aldi's where you live but I just saw ground lamb there in 1 pound packs this afternoon. your Cottage pie looks great!!
