Who, exactly, wrote down the foundational texts of the Oral Torah? Who is responsible for the compiling of the Talmud? These were some of the questions addressed to Sherira Gaon, the Rosh Yeshiva of the great city of Pumbedita in Babylon in 987 by a young Rabbi in Tunisia. His famous response, preserved for over a thousand years, is an impressive survey of the Jewish intellectual tradition, leading up to the establishment of the greatest Talmudic centers in Jewish history.

Dr Ambramson. As quoted from your lecture today..."The very quality of Orality is huge. There is a level of information that is conveyed through oral teaching that is completely flattened by textual presentation" This is immense. All students and professors alike need to put this quote on their desktop. It provides a bedrock of understanding in the study of history. Thank You.

Sorry to see a scarce attendance at this class of the fascinating history of the compilation of this important portion of the Talmudic tradition, and this just because the rain ? I didn't know so many people feared being water soluble ! :) Thank you Dr. Abramson, I've learned a lot.

Real nice information by the good doctor. Interesting note that he would refer to his name as a slave name not sure what the meaning is. Were there slaves in Canada?

Interesting lecture. Now I get it why so many Jews become lawyers. Basically going to temple is like going to law school

Shkoich, rabbi. Little correction: Kairouan is a city in northern Tunisia. Not Egypt. About 2,600 kilometers/1,600 miles apart.
