The Ancient City of Babylon: History of the Babylonian Empire

The ancient city of Babylon was a city in Mesopotamia which is now modern-day Iraq. The city of Babylon is so well known to many due to the many references to it in the Bible, although none of them are particularly glowing comments. The history of Babylon and the Babylonian Empire dates back thousands of years, and apart from its mentions in the Bible, Babylon is known for many things including its impressive Ishtar Gate, magnificent walls and buildings, the belief that it was a great seat of culture and learning and the, potentially fantastical, Hanging Gardens of Babylon built by Nebuchadnezzar II for his wife.
Although some ancient sources say that Sargon of Akkad, also known as Sargon the Great founded the city of Babylon, it is widely believed that Babylon was already founded prior to the reign of Sargon. Unfortunately, the ruins of Old Babylon have been lost to us since the water level has steadily risen over the years, and the ruins which are visible today date to over one thousand years after the city was founded! The known history of Babylon begins with its most famous king, Hammurabi who is best known for his law code.

Why do you think the Bible portrays Babylon so negatively when other ancient sources mainly praise it? Let us know what you think!
@DNH17
@DNH17 3 года назад
It's a religious\power related motivation. Just like Belzebul, one of the gods of the Philistines (along the rewriting of winners) was changed into a deamon and assimilated. The losers always leave a trace and sometime, just like Greeks, conquer implicitly the "winning" party. "Graecia capta ferum victorem cepit" as Oratius reminds us. Somehow he tells us also, between other meanings, that heritage is deeply layered. The myth of David and Goliath reminds that the Philistines were tall (or anyway armed with higher technology, a mantra in today Israel ideologically "secured" space), indeed from the South or from the East... Christianity comes as a root from Judaism or it is to it connected, despite all religions are connected, in terms of power and direct link the former is coherent with the first to ban, assimilate, deface, own the past of other cultures, or beliefs that were lost behind. The Church was in politeism a sacred space, sometimes a sacred wood, actually often. For this reason Churches are not labyrinth or walled houses but actually column supported buildings with tons of colors... this is a fact, which anyone can verify. We are filled with these things that could really appease tons of conflict and open many minds, unfortunately today, still systematically brainwashed or indifferent.

To be fair, those same Hebrew texts that portray Babylon as a wicked empire, also portray all of Isreal and the rest of the surrounding nations and empires (Assyria, Egypt, Tyre, etc...) as wicked too. The idea is that the nations did whatever they thought was right at the expense of other nations and that as long as humanity put their trust in Empire, they would be very disappointed. Both Jeremiah and Ezekiel express the idea that Babylon was used by YHWY to judge the nations for their wickedness. Daniel seems to indicate that the Babylonian kings were reasonable rulers who were often lead astray by power-hungry advisors. Revelation is using Babylon as a symbol of human empire and corrupt power demanding human allegiance, It is not talking about the literal Babylonian empire. All that isn't to say that Babylon isn't portrayed negatively. The Bible clearly claims judgment against Babylon, but it is within the world view that God uses the nations to judge each other for their "wickedness." Hence the reason you find, in the same books, God judges His own people through the invasion and exile by Babylon. Really enjoyed the video! it filled in so many blanks I had and gave a great timeline of events!

In answer to your question, Babylon, while a feat of human ingenuity and organization, was famously opposed to principles taught in scripture, that's why even in Revelations, it is said that the blood of all prophets and holy people were found in her. Greatly enjoyed the video. Yes, Babylon was considered evil by Israel. It was primarily so since it had practices that were opposed to their law. However, perhaps God considered it as a primary country to carry out His judgment on the cities of Judaea which occurred in the 6th century BC. Daniel treats the empire favorably. Revelation uses Babylon most likely as a representative of Jerusalem which again came under judgment by the Romans in the 1st century AD. The Judaeans did not consider any Gentile nation favorably. God allows that sentiment while at the same time telling us that He loved the Gentiles and wanted to make them a part of His family. God loves the Babylonians.

In addition, I would like to tell you that Iraq is subject to media distortion because of the wars. There is always exploitation by some parties and false news that they transmit to other countries in order to distort the image of this country. I do not know when they will let us live. Nice Video Kelly Great Content👏🏾. About the question you asked, Babylon actually stands as symbol for Pleasure which carries God's Children away from God into it's Captivity. It's not like, God is against a Kingdom or Culture, God is not partial to anyone. It's about Pleasure that's leading his Children away(this applies to even today) and it hurts God a lot, when his Children are rebelling against him for Pleasure. God loves entire Humanity and Kingdoms, In book of Daniel itself, many Babylonian Kings knew God and God also did Great things for them. So in short, Babylon is not about Kingdom but about Attitude of Pleasure Seeking in every Human, that's against God. Hope it Helps😁

Nice video. As for your last question, according to the Bible, Babylon is the cradle and grave of paganism and rebellion toward God, beginning with Nimrod, the first world dictator, ending with the anti(pseudo)christ as the final world dictator (all laid out in those books you mentioned). Nebuchadnezzar had a dream (Daniel 2) about all the world empires beginning with his, leading up to to the final one which will be replaced by the King of kings, who will rule with justice and peace....finally, where there will be no more pain and suffering. He extended an invitation to join him there through the greatest act of love on the cross, laying down his life for all. 💖

Really enjoyed your video and the photos of the ruins. Interestingly, before Babylon was discovered, many people viewed what the Bible said about Babylon as something like folklore or a fairy tale, it wasn’t until that German archeologist discovered the ruins of the city, that it gave credibility to what the Bible said concerning that city. Also I was thrown off by how you pronounced Sennacherib of assyria… it’s pronounced sen ack air ib, if that makes sense, it’s been well established that’s how to pronounce the name… it’s okay, I nearly failed English in school so I’m not one to speak lol. Anyways great video.

The last question I shall give word to. Lol. “Every way of a man seems right in his own eyes, but the Lord wieghs the hearts.” Proverbs 21:2. While this doesn’t totally address the question of the differing Babylonian perceptions. it illustrates that when men think they are wise and right in their thoughts and ways, God sees it from the whole perspective. Gods kingdom will reign forever, and every earthy kingdom will fall. Because men are flawed. It’s the best of a man when he lives his life for another.

I am no scholar or researcher of ancient historical civilisations and am just a novice at it, but I have my own answer to the question that you asked in the end that why unlike the other ancient sources, Biblical sources kinda condemned this otherwise praised and reverred city. In my perspective it's because of the same dislike towards the 24/7 busy and running lives of contemporary big cities of the world. We migrate to cities for new opportunities but at the same time dont like the excessively rushed and sorta selfish and mean environment of the cities. And since the Biblical writings and messages were of a more enlightened and above the humanly aesthetics, so maybe they just focussed on the costs at which those temporary charms and beauties of big cities are achieved and maintained. Also what with frequent battles to conquer the city which led to recurring destruction ajd then the persistent slavery of the defeated ones could also be the reason behind the same.
@Romeo7771
@Romeo7771 2 года назад
Its not that at all. It has NOTHING to do with what you said. It is all about who the Israelites were, their pride and perspective/attitude of/toward other nations first. Then it also had to do with the the Jewish religion Judaism second. Any lifestyle that was not in accordance to the Jewish law, the Torah, was condemned. Sice Babylon was one of the greatest city ever built (at that time) it was viewed as representative of a lawless lifestyle. And lastly it also had to do with the hate of the Jews because the Babylonian/Assyrian conquest and oppression of Israel. You just need to read the Bible and you will know this. It is all there. I am a religions scholar and a theologian. I have studied these things at an academic level for more than three decades. Cheers!
@pragyapandey24
@pragyapandey24 2 года назад
@@Romeo7771 So we can say that the law, here the Israeli, must have preferred the more conventional rural kind of lifestyle, whereas Babylon was urbanic. Secondly the fact that all the cultures consider their religion and law to be more peaceful and most honest one, therefore again Babylon was banished as it didn't adhere to the honesty parameters. So all of it basically comes down to the fact that Babylon was just a new different, and changes have always been disliked throughout the humanity regardless of time and place. So Mr. Theologian ig my understanding was not completely wrong as you are quoting it to be. Now Cheers!
@Romeo7771
@Romeo7771 2 года назад
@@pragyapandey24 It has nothing to do with urbanism nor with rural lifestyle. Also, honesty, was part of a larger concept, namely SIN! It all has to do with sin! And since dishonesty was considered sinful, you are right. However, it was much, much more than dishonesty. Anyway, have you ever read the Bible? Just curious. Cheers.

A very good narrative. Btw, The shirt that you're wearing in the video has one of the ancient Persian signatures on it , it's not Mesopotamian. Speaking of the Persians, why haven't you made any videos on the Persians at all ?? They are like *THE giant* of history !!! The 1st Iranian empire ( The Median empire ) defeated the Akkadian empire & marked a point on history. ( *Reigned for 200 years* ) Then later on, the the second Iranian empire ( the Achaemenid empire ) *was literally the OP !!! the 1st superpower in human history that abolished slavery & gave the freedom of speech & the freedom of religion , they changed the world soo much that it's now impossible to imagine what would've happened if they didn't exist* !!! ( *Reigned for 300 years* ) The third Iranian empire ( the Parthian/Ashkanid empire ) was the archrival of Rome !!! The parthian-Iranian cataphracts were the 1st knights in history & the predecessors of later European knights !!! ( *reigned for 500 years* ) The fourth Iranian empire ( the Sassanid empire ) was also the archrival of Rome , & a superpower of the world & centre of culture & civilization !!! ( *Reigned for 450 years* ) *That's a total of 1050 years of ancient history of a giant in history that you haven't covered at all* !!! Hope you'll make many videos on them soon :))

Quite brave of you to take on a topic so sure to raise the ire of many. My name is Greg, living in the desert lands of Southwest United States, and I came across this video of yours tonight while doing work on a new RU-vid channel I have started with my associate, Nolan, who lives in the Pacific Northwest of the U.S.. We have a theatrical project which we named Babylon Theatre back in 1971-72 (C.E.!) when we lived in Salt Lake City, Utah USA in those heady days of hippies and searching for all kinds of freedom. Our language-oriented satires led us to using the name, Babylon, though to a certain degree, I suppose, because it looked better than the similar sounding phrase, "babble on," which was how we used to describe our creative style of storytelling. Certainly the Biblical story of the Tower might hint that the people's babbling was what God hated. Now, fifty years after our first work, my co-director Nolan and I (we work mostly as a duo) in the course of naming our YT Channel decided on the brand, "Modern Babylonian Comics." During work on our new video movie, we have had some discussions about the sparse amount of data which is available to the average Western student in their public school days (or religious indoctrinations) about ancient Babylon, as you said much of it coming from the (I'd say, obviously biased) Bible mentions. Having once seen a photo that purported to show the remains of a -- or "the"-- theater of Babylon, we started wondering if Babylon did have a drama or theatrical tradition, and moreover, whether there might have been any Babylonian comics or comedy writers. This led to a slightly scary overshadowing of our imagination by the thought of a sort of guild of old, known now as the Ancient Babylonian Comics. For this reason we decided that we were chosen by the spirits of these ABCs to carry on under their guidance; hence we became the MBC. This is not to be discounted, because it led me tonight to see your lecture listed on the sidebar of my channel home page. (Which you might find by searching YT for ModernBabylonianComics or our new movie, "The Babylontheon: Fifty Years of Babylon Theatre." Hope this innocent advertising doesn't get me in trouble.) Thanks for the enjoyable video. Believe me, I learned a lot. Keep ducking those arrows.
