Rathbone is THE definitive Holmes: I saw some clip on RU-vid where Conan Doyle was being interviewed and called Watson [something along the lines of] a rather stupid friend. Most unjust, but then Watson was his creation. Be that as it may, Nigel Bruce gives a warm avuncular performance. A very enjoyable film.

The film was shot in 1.37 to 1 (Academy) ratio, but TV screens are much wider. Simply stretching the image horizontally to fill the screen horizontally and vertically distorts everything in a distracting way.

The idea of resuscitating Sherlock Holmes as a hero to fight Nazis was absolute, pure genius, and Basil Rathbone rose to the occasion by delivering a sterling performance. I know that Nigel Bruce's Watson was far from the original portrayal, but it added a note of comic relief in desperate times. These films really were masterpieces and served the war effort well.

I don't agree at all. It might have been an original thing or a moral necessity back in that time, but watching it now, it seems really a demented and unnatural as well as instrumental forcing. Beside offering a dead-boring episode, since nothing of the kind ever went on at the time. There is no chance that Victorian era and the contradictory but fascinating world it produced, could be transferred so many years after. Without nothing detracting from the actor play, which is always fantastic.

I had Relatives in Germany during WWII, but I really appreciate these Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson episodes. Some Germans (in the top leadership & SS & Gestapo) were so unbelievably cruel...it does me good to see them displayed in such negative light. I only wish that we in America had a Program to publically show the courage our Soldiers, etc. displayed during the War...especially for the sake of those who never got to come back home to the U.S.. so many of them made that one-way trip when they were so young!!!

It's obvious that you have never read any of the Sherlock Holmes novels or novellas by Conan Doyle or you would not have praised the portrayal of Watson as "quintessential". Hollywood reduced Watson to a moronic, inept, bumbling cartoon character unlike the resourceful, competent character that Conan Doyle created. Shill!

Many Sherlock Holmes purist hate this film because Holmes & Watson are transported from Victorian England to England of the 1940s. Our heroes are not pitted against the master crimminal Moriary but against the Nazis. I personally have no problem with this time shift because the state of the world was in at the time. I admit that I prefer Homes & Watson solving crimes set in the Victorian time frame but this film has much to offer. Basil Rathbone & Nigel Bruce are in top form . Evelyn Ankers is excellent as Kitty, a young woman who assists our heroes to hunt down the Nazis. Thomas Gomez & Reginald Denny are also excellent. The film moves along at quick & suspenseful pace. The screenplay was created to keep the morale of it's viewers high during the tense times that was WWII.

"The Voice of Terror". In 1942, after a three-year break from the movies, which were spent on the radio, Rathbone & Bruce, the greatest Holmes/Watson of this or any other generation, returned to fight Nazis and fifth columnists in London. The ending was also the beginning of something: Rathbone ended the movie with a quote from Conan Doyle's "His Last Bow". When audience after audience stood and cheered, some even sobbing, Universal knew they had a magic formula on their hands, and ended the next few Holmes films with similar endings.....

The Rathbone/Bruce combo was enjoyable, but Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke set THE standard of the pair as Conan Doyle intended. Rathbone may have been able to match Brett had he been given the Granada series' scripts and production, but Bruce could never have touched Hardwicke's Watson. Just two totally different approaches. Bruce was a comic actor in this series, playing the buffoon - which is not the "real" Watson. Don't get me wrong, I love the Rathbone/Bruce series, but I put them in the same category as the more modern Cumberbatch/Freeman series - entertaining, but not the canonical pair.

Kind of lame that Kitty was shot then the nazi threw the gun and ran away to be gunned down. Oh the writing of the old days. I love Holmes but some of the aspects they concoct are nothing compared the original stories. And oh god how idiotic they make Watson lol
