When I was a small boy I used to watch these movies. I'm 64 now and find myself trying to recapture my childhood...

I'm glad to hear that Rathbone and Bruce were friends in real life. Their chemistry on screen was beautiful. I'm so glad I came upon this channel!!❤

Something else about Rathbone...he loved animals and had a cat and many dogs. He rescued his black shepherd that was going to be killed for attacking a sheep. Rathbone took her back to his home and he and his wife had the dog with no problems. The dog lived a long life with them. I especially love him for his kindness.

That closing speech by Basil Rathbone is just magic. That's why I return to these excellent films. His gravitas in the role is unmatched.

64 is young, I am 72 and these films are my tonic for still being young amidst the calamity of our current state of human activities.

Sherlock Holmes is the greatest character ever created. How fortunate we can enjoy the perfect personification of Sherlock Holmes in Basil Rathbone.

I adored these films as a child, and I still adore them...even 50 years later.

When Watson says something that doesn't make sense and Holmes just gives him a look always cracks me up in the movies. LOL

I grew up with sherlock holmes At age 8 i started reading holmes and have been reading and watching sherlock since , I am now 66 yrs old and still enjoying sherlock and watson 😊

NOBODY but NOBODY can hold a candle to BASIL RATHBONE or NIGEL BRUCE as these immortal characters.l’m so hooked. l’ve watched them every day for years... they NEVER get ‘stale’! Absolutely BRILLIANT. 👊🏾🤩😉 lndubitably!

Basil just oozes charisma and class

One of the best films of a great series! And don't forget, Rathbone and Bruce had a radio series at the same time! What a terrific team they made, perfectly cast; and friends in real life, as well! They always had a fine supporting cast, especially Dennis Hoey as Inspector Lestrade. Many character players showed up in different roles throughout the series. Let’s not leave out the superb set design, cinematography, and lighting, all on a low budget. The director, Roy William Neill, was a master at this.

This ending speech always brings me to tears. The terrible tragedy of two world wars (in WWI both Rathbone and Bruce excelled themselves in courage and honour) left this feeling. Those who had sacrificed their lives did so to rid the world of tyranny but also to make a better world. Look at the degraded state we are in today. It breaks my heart.

There have been many actors who have played Sherlock Holmes but Basil and Nigel were the best by far.

I was always amazed at how Rathbone, looked so uncannily like, the original Sidney Paget illustrations of the Great Detective.

Sally: barely raises her voice. Holmes: "Watson, give her a sedative."

My favorite of the series. Atmospheric, spooky and well written/ acted. With a good moral speech at end. " New spirit in the land." What more does one want in entertainment.

I love how all these Sherlock Holmes films with Basil and Nigel use the same repertoire of actors. It makes it all the more comfy. ;)

Cheers to Dr. Watson. Some of these Rathbone/Bruce movies portray him as being hardly short of a fool, but this one did give him some degree of credit for competence. .

These two were the best portrayal of Sherlock Holmes hands down IMO. Nigel is a riveting as Basil lol. He plays the version of Watson perfectly IMO.

Rathbone was in fact older than Bruce and a genuine WWl hero. He served as an officer in the intelligence section of his regiment and was decorated for valor for his willingness to conduct single man intel missions right up to the German lines.

These are timeless classics.

Watching this I find it hard to believe Rathbone was older, it looks absolutely incredible.

Grand old movie and grand old actors. Nothing like it today to compare. Only one fault to find, that they didn’t make MORE Sherlock Holmes movies with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce!

This is definitely one of the best Holmes films I've ever seen. First degree acting with a strong plot in a family-friendly movie.

Great speech by Sherlock Holmes at the end of "Sherlock Holmes Faces Death"-- Holmes' "Shining Altars" speech to Watson. Wonderful sentiments expressed by Holmes of the need to recognize what we owe to other people less fortunate than ourselves out of the goodness of our hearts through charity, not merely what we are compelled to give them through such things as taxation. But sadly, Holmes' prediction about the "days of grab and greed" by mankind being "on their way out" has not proven to be the case. Humanity unfortunately is still as greedy, selfish and self-centered as ever!

They used to shows these old black and white films on TV on aautumn Saturday afternoons here in the UK in the late 1980's. Lovely sitting with an open fire, a bowl of tomato soup and cheese sandwich. Heart-warming food with a heart-warming film.

How many people noticed Peter Lawford as the sailor wrapping his mates wrist in the opening first scene?

This was the first Sherlock Holmes film my brothers and I ever saw, and we were fortunate it was graced by the incomparable Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce in the title roles. Back in the 1980's, when we were still children/early teens, we would get up at midnight on Fridays to watch these classic films. (To avoid disturbing the rest of the family, we used flashlights and snuck silently from the upstairs bedrooms into the basement of our old farmhouse, which really helped get us into the mood!) In retrospect, we were especially fortunate because SHERLOCK HOLMES FACES DEATH is probably the best of the Sherlock Holmes films produced by Universal Studios. Some of their early efforts were so thoroughly modernized that it was jarring, and, quite frankly, disappointing. But this film more closely captures the atmosphere of Doyle's stories, and even fleshes out the original short story THE MUSGRAVE RITUAL with great imagination. Thanks so much for posting this pristine digital copy with excellent sound and image quality!

The landlord calls 5 mins to closing, then spends the next 10 mins rambling on about the Musgraves. Best way to get a lock-in I've ever seen. 😅

Oh boy, this was a really good Sherlock Holmes movie, and one that I've never ever seen before, and I don't know how I missed it!

I love the constant eavesdropping and listening at doors, the servants, even the military guys have been bitten by the bug! Lol. Also the tap dance up and down the stairs with Watson and the officer, gracefully mixing humor and suspense! This movie was better than I imagined. Yummy

I watch all the Rathbone/Bruce movies repeatedly. It's like a sleeping draft. Very relaxing. I always laugh, find edit mistakes, and enjoy the other actors. Hallywell Hobbs Is a true favorite! He's brilliant in this episode!

I love the prophetic last lines stated by Holmes (Basil Rathbone) on the rise of humanity and altruism throughout the world. Too bad it still has not yet happened. Still, something to aspire to.

The story this is "loosely" based on The Adventure of The Musgrave Ritual is one of my favorite Doyle stories. I've seen so many disparage Jeremy Brett as Holmes but fail to recognize the difference in Rathbone and Brett's style and the actual scripts they are given. Brett was the classic Victorian Holmes while Rathbone was the modern world Holmes of the 1940's as a WWII morale booster. Both are amazing actors but Brett is the definitive Holmes as per Doyle's original stories. Brett's 'exaggerated' mood swings as stated by some here fail to realize Brett was taking into account the cocaine habit (7% solution) and it's possible effects on a logical mind. I find Brett and Hardwicke the quintessential Holmes and Watson. Rathbone is by far my favorite film Holmes.

Basil Rathbone is superb in this film (as in many others); he was the real deal in life - a brave, kind, decent man. Love this film!

I grew up watching these movies and they are amazing to look at now!!! They always had a great story and they always made me feel good at the end!!!

Nigel Bruce...such a funny man when he act as Watson.... great the duo ....

Sherlock taught me to notice the small details , look for things that most people take for granted . And sometimes others will say something innocuous but it sparks an idea , another angle from someone else's perspective, Watson is constantly helping Holmes this way . We all have something to contribute in this life Holmes could see this , modern Detectives / inspectors would save more lives prevent more real crimes by thinking this way , alas are more worried about bad press and protecting the rich and their property

From the original book/story, The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual" is a short story by Arthur Conan Doyle, involved Pythagoras for the solution and not a chess board, and roughly one third of the story occurred outside not inside. Also the treasure in the story was the Crown of England and its jewels which belong to the Kings and Queens of England.

Words pronounced correctly, good manners. Stresses the importance of a profound vocabulary, eloquence and erudition without being pretentious and most importantly a wry sense of humor !

Love these movies and the tv series. I also laugh that in every movie Watson is administering sedatives to someone lol

Okay, someone might tell me I am wrong but; the uncredited actor playing Captain Vickory (the American pilot) was Milburne Stone; Doctor Adams from the old GUNSMOKE series. Just look at the face and listen to the voice. If someone else mentioned this, sorry. I didn't feel like scrolling through 1.2K comments.

The way the men carried themselves back then..We have lost something in the last 70 or so years..Very sad.

basil is the best sherlock impersonation I have seen till date😍.... in the part where holmes is shot(pretend ofc) I felt so sick all of a sudden😥.... and when i got to know the bullet was fake, I felt happy although I personally thought it would be a real thriller if the bullets were real😅

Excellent episode. I have to admit, I got a bit confused with the plot midway through the story. Thank goodness Mr. Holmes explained everything because he's always one and even two steps ahead of everybody else. More secret tunnels, dark stormy nights and a raven to top off an hour of good entertainment :)

How many times has poor Mrs Hudson prepared a nice meal for two and Holmes abruptly decides to leave to work on a new case....and, the food goes untouched??!!

Basil's words at the concluded portion of the film were fantastically honorable and true the time of change has come and. Too hope will never conclude.

Nigel Bruce's Watson might be a little slower than the literary Watson, but he and Basil Rathbone's Holmes did the best job of portraying the pair's warm friendship.

I love how the clock tower clouds are almost still, and in other shots it's supposed to be a raging windy night, you can even hear the fan blowing instead of wind effect

I once heard basil on a radio talk show. They were reviewing his filmography, and he referred to the Sherlock movies as his "bread and butter" I loved him sqaring off against errol Flynn in Robin hood and I think captain blood. Nigel Bruce best side kick since Ed mcmann
