Sherman Henson: born July 1, 1957, Sherman grew up surrounded by a strong family and a mother that strongly believed in God. He gravitated to boxing early in life through the DC Circuits Boys’ Club, competing in amateur boxing at the age of 11-13.
Sherman joined the Army and continued to box, training with Hall of Fame Trainer Kenny Adams at Ft Hood, Texas, and other high-profile boxers. He had his last fight in Germany fighting the then amateur European Champion. He won by 2nd round K.O. at 139 lbs. This fight was not a part of the actual European Tournament and so he was not named the 1982 Amateur Boxing European Champion. After serving eight years, Sherman was discharged and returned to his hometown of Washington, D.C.
Sherman worked as a manager at a local hotel/ restaurant when co-workers told him boxers were staying at the hotel. Once the boxers came down to the lobby, Sherman came out to see who it was and one of the boxers was Paul Banke, who he had previously met through amateur boxing tournaments. Paul introduced Henson to his manager, Bob Richardson, who was impressed by Sherman’s boxing knowledge and asked Sherman to train his stable of boxers in California. He has been training boxers ever since, with outstanding results.
In 2000, Sherman decided to relocate to Tampa, FL. and has continued training in the sport he loves. In 2008, Steve Cross and Sherman, opened a gym called West Tampa Boxing where the motto was “Giving a kid a fighting chance.”
Sherman met Jimmy Williams and helped him train Antonio Tarver Jr. up to Jimmy’s passing. Francisco Arreola took over the gym in 2016, and the two remain friends and collaborated on Legends Gym from 2016 - 2018.
Through meeting with legendary trainers Angelo Dundee, Emanuel Stewart, and Jimmy Williams, Sherman realized that there’s a big difference between training and teaching. He continues to be a part of boxing corners and teaches boxing for an entirely new generation of talent, loving every second of the experience and the culture of boxing.
