Remember a guy bought a radial engined Sherman to a war weekend at the Severn Valley Railway years ago (along with his Diamond T and Dyson trailer to carry it!!) And after driving it around a bit parked it outside the pub on Saturday evening.......in conversation he mentioned it was radial, which we'd never heard of (we tend to deal in diesel engines that tip the scales from 8 to 27 tons and cylinder counts from 6 to 16) so he picked his pint up and said "come on, I'll show you!" So, with the back hatches open, we were staring in awe at this cramped, packed in aeroplane engine squeezed into a defiantly "non aeroplane" when he shouted "fingers clear" and wound it up...... Those exhausted are f**king loud when your head is six inches from them!!! Glorious stuff!!😊😊😊😊

radial engines on planes are meant to operate at high rpm and only at high rpm for long periods of time. therefore they are cammed like dragsters ( except obviously there are cam rings instead of shafts) this engine is obviously cammed for massive low end torque, so idles very smoothly.

@@TralfazConstruction There were several engines that were chosen for the Sherman, including an all aluminum V-8 Ford with overhead cam and 4 valves per cylinder (GAA) and a very strange motor that took 5 bus engines and somehow put them all together and made it work. They were too complicated in battle. Those were given to the Russians in the Lend/Lease act. They loved them (according to my Dad.) By the way, the radial was an airplane engine, and the Ford V-8 was designed to be a V-12 airplane engine but the RR Merlin was already well accepted so Ford cut down the casting for the Sherman.

It doesn't just look, it is :). Many WWII era aircraft were fitted with variants of this engine, including turbo-charged variants. What's funny that turbo-charger as it is was first introduced for radial aircraft engines so engine won't suffer from less dense air (=less oxygen per unit of air) as aircraft climbed into higher altitudes (like above 12k ft or so).

first start? no because a radial engine did always smoke intensively at cold start...(caused from the oil filtering in the lover cylinders...)
@harentrois
@harentrois 4 года назад
That's right, a radial engine burns about 1L of oil at startup which produces a lot of smoke. Here, I'm talking about a first start after refurbishment. So, as this engine has not yet turned, there is no oil in the lower cylinders, so no smoke at startup. In a radial engine, there is no oil in the crankcase, for the Sherman, it is an external oil tank which is in the hull. The engine oil pump pumps the oil from the tank and lubricates the engine before moving to a filter and back into the tank. This principle can be seen in the video, on the left is the oil tank with one oil supply pipe to the engine and another for the return to the tank. The remaining oil in the engine goes into 2 small tanks below the engine to start lubricating at the next start. The starting smoke is due to the fact that in the 3 cylinders of the bottom, some of the engine oil remaining in the pistons passes through capillary action. The oil in the combustion chambers burns at start-up. I hope these clarifications are instructive and useful. The Sherman was built with four different engines, the radial being the best.
@buckhorncortez
@buckhorncortez 4 года назад
No. The radial was the hardest to work on, had the least power, and worst reliability in that use. The Ford GAA was a far better tank engine.
@danh8302
@danh8302 4 года назад
The GAA was considered best and went on to power several other tanks like the m26 next. It was the most powerful by a good margin and very reliable. It was rate at 500 hp and over 1000lb ft. The Chrysler a57 was said to be able to move the tank even with as few as 18 of its 30 cylinders working. Maintenance was a concern with such a motor and it was underpowered at 375. The 6 cylinder Chrysler motors that made up the a57 were flatheads so it wasn’t really advanced, just unique. The diesel was two motors put together too but o think it one went to the Marines and I believe was the least preferable. I understand it was aircraft demand that made them go for a different motor than the continental radial here. Also it has a tendency to foul the lower plugs. You also have to hand crank a radial to start after cold soak. This will make sure you don’t hydrolock a lower cylinder with oil. Only if you are scrambling to get into your tank you won’t take that time, they hit the electric starter when they’re trying to get into the fight.

+Ben M It you think about it the idea of using a air cooled radial engine in a tank made a lot of sense back then before compact high horsepower diesel engine. To start off with no cooling system to deal with even today cooling system on tanks are a pain in the butt. Radial engines were certainly lighter than inline engines of the day and while taller than they were much shorter meaning a more compact drivetrain assembly. Additionally the radial engines had much higher horsepower ratings and were meant to be field serviceable. The big downfall of all gasoline powered tanks is just that gasoline. The Shermans nickname was the Ronson because it caught fire so easily
@jameshay7247

@gullreefclub
@gullreefclub 8 лет назад
If you say so but to the WWII veterans that lived in the neighborhood that I grew up in as a kid they had plenty of names for the M4 and they normally all started with F@#king and commonly ended with piece of S#!t. The nicknames like "Ronson", "Tommy Cooker", and "The Burning Grave" were ones that could be said in polite company that referred to how easily they caught fire (gas engines) many times with their crew being burned to death. As a side note the US Army did not give the moniker \ name Sherman to the "Medium Tank, during WWII nor did the US Army give the name Stuart to the Light Tank M3\M5 or the names Lee \ Grant to the Medium Tank M3. The credit of naming of US Army WWII tanks after American Civil War generals goes to the British and it was later (post WWII) that the practice of referring to a M4 as a Sherman became popular \ standard practice.

@peterson7082
@peterson7082 8 лет назад
+gullreefclub No, no, no. Ronson was post-war. Tommy Cooker referred to British tanks, not the Sherman in particular. "Burning grave", I have not heard that one before. The fuel wasn't the problem in early variants or in any for that matter. That was ammunition stowage.

It's a shame America didn't bite into the Diesel concept in the 2nd world war. Alot of lives could have been saved had they did so. A panzer or Tiger hit a sherman, just a spark into the fuel system and boom, everybody in the tank is dead. The German troops called the Sherman "Tommy Cookers" and GI's called it a "Zippo" after the lighter, meaning it lights off first strike everytime. As far as the rebuild and running of this engine these guys did a great job as she runs sweet.
