But I just have to write to you to say I had the great pleasure to hear you twice in recital in the 1970’s, and have never heard a greater, more beautiful baritone voice in all my 71 years! And I Am a bass who studied with Carol Vaness’s teacher and the great bass Leon Lishner. So I’ve heard many singers, but your voice is truly special and I consider myself so fortunate to have heard you in person! I hope you are happy and having a good life!!

As a little side-note to the wonderful singing (for me personally, NO ONE surpasses Sherrill Milnes in this aria), I love how, during the applause, he takes his handkerchief out and dabs his face while happily smiling and acknowledging the ovation. Charming gesture.:)

There is a great interview of Milnes in the book "Great Singers on Great Singing" by Jerome Hines, which focuses on his technique and approach to singing... as well as interviews with many other greats such as Sills, Sutherland, Merril, Gedda, Corelli, Domingo, Pavarotti, Horne, Nilsson and many others. Awesome book to read if you are interested in the techniques and approaches of some of the greatest to ever grace the stage.
Reminds me of how Martina Arroyo once said that she would have made a slight change in the plot of Tosca if Milnes was the Scarpia. You take a guess what that plot change would have been
Superb. Milnes' interpretive vocal skill in Rigoletto is one of the best ever delivered by a non-Italian singer. A powerful condemnation of the "cortigiani", their games, their lies, and their intrigues.
No matter whether he had a long career or not, he had a hugely DISTINGUISHED one and he was one of the few singers who had that innate ability to interpret the roles he sang, being able to transform them with his acting ability into something totally believable even as witnessed here with his facial expressions and arm movements. A beautiful instrument wonderfully used. Bravissimo!
Such a moving performance of one of Verdi's greatest arias, and you really feel Rigoletto's anger and torment. I think Milnes, who I've always loved, sings it beautifully and with an aching nobility of sound. Even on an opera stage, what was always remarkable was how he always brought the character to life, and his smooth legato, great musicality and of course those effortless high notes. For me, while there may be baritones with more beautiful voices this is an example of a full-package singer.

Premesso che, a parer mio, il più grande Rigoletto fu Tito Gobbi ma Sherrill Milnes è un ottimo Rigoletto.

Lo sentii nei panni del Barone Scarpia (ruolo, a parer mio, che sembra fatto apposta per lui) fu emozionante. Sono giovane ma non per questo le concedo di dirmi che non capisco. I remember when I heard his Scarpia recording with Freni and Pavarotti how excited I was in hearing his unique and histrionic expression on the phrase "La regina farrebbe grazia ad un cadavere".
Yes! And it didn't sound 'fake villainous,' it sounded as if the Scarpia was trying to inflict emotional pain on Tosca. That phrase was a marvelous touch.
Sherill Milnes is the greatest of them all,if you couldn't catch an opera with him there,was also Sweden's Ingvar Wixell ,but Mr. Milnes was the tops! in singing and Stage acting . look how he becomes the anguished Rigoletto in this recital.His interpretation of many of opera's baritone characters are par none!

Best Rigoletto performer. Listen to the 1972 Decca recording featuring an untamable Luciano Pavarotti. Milnes, Pavarotti, Sutherland and Ghiaurov are simply the best.
Si, mi piace davvero molto! Per me è uno dei migliori baritoni, anche se il mio preferito rimane Cappuccilli. E devo dire che per essere americano, pronuncia molto bene l'italiano...
I agree that he wore his voice out. He says in his book that he never had an 'easy technique' and you can see some of that physically when he sets up while singing. Still, when he was at his peak he was tremendous. he had a steely, ringing quality that was spine tingling and hard to label. As for his artistry: it was intense and outstanding. But he labored too hard and too long. That's his only sin. The Warren crowd hated him, but so what? They hated everyone! Even Merrill! Go figure...

I thought the public who appreciates opera were the most educated and intelligent, but lately I have been disgusted by that public because of the absurd things and discussions I read. The lyrical singers of today are crap, soulless and only think of money and fame and occupy places that only the great singers occupied, the old generation like Sherrill Milnes is the best.
@@eternalmourning9613 Milnes was awful. The "old" generation was dead by the time Milnes was singing. Battistini, Ruffo, Tibbett, Stracciari, Schlusnus, Bellantoni, Ancona...
In his book, he stated it took a lot of 'juice' to get his voice going - longer to warm up, etc... However, he also very clearly stated that he was known for his perfect technique and 'faultless' singing. It wasn't until he experienced a couple of burst capillaries that his singing experienced trouble. The surgery he had that zapped the capillary problem also left small scars that left his vocal chords unable to expand uniformly, and he had to drop some of his heavier roles. His singing quality faded year by year after that. Also in his book, he recounts these years when the Met used him less and less until finally, they weren't going to engage him at all. Milnes writes as if he did not see this coming or ever understand why. When I listen to Milnes over these last years, I have to agree with the Met - his singing deteriorated until it was no longer up to that standard, but Milnes was likewise correct in that the Met should have 'met' (haha) with him and told him why they were moving away from him. That would have been the proper and courteous thing to do for one who gave so many great years of service to that stage.

@@bodiloto E c'è davvero una vera differenza nella registrazione? Per me la voce di Milnes non è bella, anzi nelle registrazioni; infatti il colore non c'è, la voce suona brutta, sporca; cantava con enorme difficoltà. E la sua intonazione! È divertente.

Perfect resonance, vibrato, with just the right tensions, bloom and chiaroscuro. It was neither too dark, hooty or too bright. It played middle aged, old and young very well. Milnes at this stage of his career and way into the 1980’s was a real star for the American opera scene.

The aria is similar in architecture of Renato's 'Eri tu' from Un Ballo in Maschera. A passionate aggressive outburst followed by sorrowful resignation. But for some reason Milnes never recorded Renato although he sang him on stage in Chicago in 1967.
Interpretazione molto sentita dal cantante, voce straordinaria, ma interpretazione con alcuni difetti. Per es si sente accento anglofono in certi punti.
Milnes is controversial because he wasn't a "natural". He was a famous loser of vocal competitions, He took a long time to arrive. I heard him first with Goldovsky. But he perservered and had very superior musianship and style. He replaced Merrill at the Met. His voice was higher and brighter so his timing was good. He was always better on recordings that in the theater he didn't have the rich rolling sound of Cappucilli, MacNeil or Wixell. And he had vocal trouble early. Still great.
@barmanjoe Buy yourself a new pair of ears!! II sang with this guy and in his prime he was a real tornado. He sang in his own way but was very efficient but not for long i must admit.

He is just amazingly pitch perfect and insanely powerful, but tenderly touching at the same time, like milk and honey - hey isn´t he a dairy farmer´s child? :) Therefore!. The Best Rigoletto ever!!

Sapesse come esaudirei il suo desiderio... purché mi esenti dall'ascoltarla, trovo insufficiente l'originale si figuri il clone. E non ho fanatismi isterici, ho solo le orecchie selettive e fra tante voci baritonali, proprio non mi soffermo su Milnes, ma massimo rispetto per il gusto altrui.
I have to agree with you. I'm a baritone myself, though not in this repertoire. I MARVEL at Milnes for his timbre and natural ability, but I also cringe at MIlnes for some of the vocal histrionics he was unfortunately prone to later in his career. You can hear them creeping in here, with his uneven "cover" and his odd way of hooking notes up top. He's a problematic baritone for me... his contemporary, Renato Bruson is less known, but I think a far better singer.
Bruson was a lyrical baritone who forced himself to darken his natural colour to give the voice a more mature and dramatic flavour. Unfortunately this made him very boring to listen too.
