Thanks. Would love more on honey oak as it impacts a lot of people. How about light french gray? Pictures would be great. So, a blue will make it pop more but nicely. Think I'm trying to tone down orange. The suggested colors are a little to bold for the majority. Also, think kitchens as this is where most of the oak will be. Thanks
Thank you James -- this video really speaks to me. I've used "Rainwashed" with honey oak trim for years. Agree that "Agreeable Gray" is a good looking neutral with honey oak as well. Yeah for updating all the '80's - '90's decor 😉
SW Peppercorn is a deep neutral that looks fantastic in our 90s home that if too to bottom honey oak trim. It makes the trim pop and highlights the architectural lines in the home . It’s the first color that actually enhanced the look of the oak rather than compete with it. It also is a calm backdrop on the walls in our cream cabinet kitchen. Don’t be afraid to sample this one. It’s a winner.
Glad to see you got around to this series! In future entries could you consider recommending colors that complement yet don't enhance your floor color? For instance, if your hardwood has a red undertone, what colors would look good but not intensify the red. Thank you!
I will never stop loving golden oak stain. I liked all your choices. Dark Hunter green looks very rich with golden oak. Also, deep crimson is fantastic.
For anyone watching this video I just want to “second” the first color James suggested. I have honey oak kitchen cabinets and trim with a soft terra cotta color tile. I painted my kitchen a color very similar to Carmalized at least 10 years ago. It desperately needs painting again but even after this much time I still LOVE it. If you can’t tell, I’m very proud of myself for picking that color because I picked it out by myself way before I knew about James!!🤣
I LOVE Sherwain Williams Conservative Gray with honey oak. IMHO it's the perfect Green/Gray without too much blue popping up. It's slightly less saturated than Rainwashed (also a great color).
A few years back I went crazy on antique oak furniture so currently I have ‘alabaster’ on the ceiling, ‘barely there’ (yep a odd pink colour) on the walls with a feature wall of a tile grey in the dinning area, a few white decor items and the oak furniture everywhere. I love it, it’s so easy to live with and the softness of the walls and ceiling stops the furniture from feeling heavy and cumbersome. Thanks for the video and as always some really good colour choice ideas.
Hi James! Really like all your videos. My agenda is not the honey oak trim. It’s honey oak kitchen cabinets, living room honey oak floor and trim, all the honey oak doors (including closet doors), It looks so dated. Painting around them with right colors probably the most effective and inexpensive way to transfer the house from old to fabulous. But what are those magic colors? I need professional help desperately . Hopefully you will get this message.
What if you aren't crazy about the yellow/orange tones in your woodwork? Will alabaster bring out those tones? I have Alabaster cabinets and our beams are closer to orange. I'm not crazy about the color of those.
Had I seen this video beforehand I would have tried a sample of the alabaster before making a final decision. I chose dover white. Creamy is more yellow than dover white. Alabaster is brighter and whiter . All are warm. My floors are orangey oak still. It looks great. 👌
Many years ago I painted my living room a terracotta/orange color and yeah it definitely works! Time for a change now. I actually think oak trim doesn't clash as much as people think. It's just really out of style.
I really like your videos. Your advise is great. And you are pleasant to watch. Can I ask for advise on a color choice? I am so afraid to make a change but desperately want to change my colors in my home.
These are nice colours and will have to look for equivalent as my paint store is a Benjamin Moore dealer only and I like to stick with them. I am looking to apply these for a bamboo floor, which is a bit more yellow than the more orange honey oak but I think would work with these colour palettes too.
Here for bedroom colors but I did Behr’s woodland sage for my home office. The trim and floors (throughout the house) are honey oak and I think the sage green compliments it nicely. Would definitely recommend, not sure the SW equivalent.
Do you have or could you make a video that addresses Orange/yellow oak floors and white trims? Have thus all over the house but having huge problems trying to figure out colors for main walls. Please help!!!
I have a small house old I am changed my countertop and backsplash hood and sink faucet and kitchen color but not the orange oak cabinets it's not in my budget right now my cabinet is orange oak color real wood and my floor is also the same color as cabinet and real wood so I already put the black quartz countertop with a white thick little line in it and I chose the backsplash white glass mosaic tile and little grey line in there same style as countertop I will remove the cabinet over my hood and I m putting modern style hood so right now I have off white walls I am thinking for pure white for the ceiling and the same color for the walls can you please give advice I like to see my house contemporary style but my house is 100 years old single-family house. I appreciate your work and love your work I really wish you suggest me please I forget to mention my ceiling is also very low 7 feet high only I have a ceiling with beams please help me with what paint color for the wall and ceiling I can choose tomorrow I have to buy paint
I enjoy your videos and have learned a lot. I have oak from stained in Minwax Provincial. Any tips on paint colors for that. I will be painting my living room and dining room soon and can't decide where to go colorwise. Thank you
Hello James!! It’s me again!! My wood cabinets/trim/floors are not as yellow as your sample, they’re more orangey reddish brown. Would SW Peppercorn, SW Antler Velvet and SW Natural Linen make a good palette? Then in another room would the same Antler Velvet, Natural Linen and Cyberspace do well together? Thank you so much!!
I have white trim but honey oak floors. I will be putting light almost white tile in my kitchen. Lvrm/dnrm combo is darker, kitchen very bright. Any ideas
@@thepaintpeople great! Thank you. We are going with Agreeable Gray to compliment the honey oak kitchen cabinets(which we didn’t pick) in our new house. Can’t wait to see how it turns out. Thank you
@@TaraFerdosi I'm in the same situation. Just moved into a house built in 1999 with honey oak cabinets I don't want to paint. Thinking about Alabaster or Agreeable Gray to paint walls instead. Did you paint your walls Agreeable Gray? If so, are you happy with it?
Me too! Our trim is dark redwood, floors more the honey oak, and a river rock fireplace (warm & cool stones). Really challenging combos, James please help! Thanks for the great videos 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I’m tired of seeing gray and beige everywhere. My house is from 1897, I had dark green sage and lots of darker colors. I don’t want to be in a cavern anymore. My kitchen though has hardly ANY light only Western). I have honey and dark everywhere. I like Peach Fuzz or something higher LRV. Though it might be too orange. Can anyone PLEASE HELP ME??
I’m actually looking for a paint color for my walls to make the most of trying to coordinate with my golden oak cabinets. I’m a renter, and my landlady lets me paint the walls, because it’s a mobile home which came with a very VERY tacky, ugly, one might say, hideous, nay, disgusting “wallpaper” (a strange combination drywall/ paneling/ wallpaper invention that mobile homes have). So she lets me paint over that, because she has a soul. But for some reason, she doesn’t want me to paint over the ABUNDANT golden oak cabinets throughout the home. There are tons of the cabinets in the very large kitchen, in the dining room, in the bathrooms, and two more sets in the hallway. Golden cabinets EVERYWHERE. So, since I can’t change them, I’m trying to paint the walls a good color. I actually already got to paint a few “accent” places with BEHR’s 2024 color of the year, Cracked Pepper, and I absolutely adore it. I’m considering White everywhere else. Probably going to go with BEHR’s Ultra White in the hallway, because it’s very dark, and another white in the living room, kitchen, and dining room (it’s an open floor plan). I’m sticking with my Sherman Williams Repose Gray in the family room, which is the only non-bedroom in the house without golden oak cabinets. Love it. I wonder if someone can recommend a white they’d use if they had to live in a house packed with unchangeable golden oak cabinets. Thanks!
Painted house in agreeable gray....I hate it. It's too light. With natural light, it makes wood look yellow and cheap. I'm going darker. Rich tones in a mocha or latte with a little gold in it. Much better. Save agreeable gray for white trim.

James, you missed the best way to deal with honey oak trim - paint that "stuff" out! Yes, I understand, you're talking to the people who, for some unknown, twisted reason, want that trim. But let's be real - paint that "stuff" out. Now, I'm not a professional designer, but I have impeccable taste and extraordinary instincts. :) Just paint that "stuff" out. You're welcome. Cheers, Cliff
I have to disagree with you....i live in a house in the country with cedar siding, wooden plank cathedral ceilings and wood window trims and a few beams I'm not going to fight with the basic construction of the house.
I have a Honey Pine Bedroom Set. I have white walls and wild west 1950's stuff. Yeah haw! Indian trade blankets, cowhide, turquoise ect. Looks like a western furniture store! I have struggled for decades to find a color for my walls and peaceful accessories that go with that damm yellowish honey pine. I agree with you 💯. I will be painting all five pieces of that bedroom set soon.
@@juliastockhausen7173 Hey Julia, here's a thought - they sell paint in 5 gallon containers. Get several of those and you're set! LOL I'm just kidding; if you like what you have, absolutely do not change it. I'm just not a fan. That's the beauty of taste - there's enough to go around for all of us. And in every flavor imaginable.
