Well, I guess nobody mentions it here: the lyrics are truly deep. It's about running from problems, from people, from closeness. The girl from the song feels nowhere secure or safe. She tries to run from familiar patterns, and by doing so, she repeats the pattern learned from her father.
It's about a girl who ended up with borderline personality disorder, running away from the rat race which keeps trying to suck her into it's vortex where most women end up, being a baby incubator with an apron on. She instead lives in her own world of fantasy and dissociation. That's why it makes me cry. It's a character portrait of my very life. It's not necessarily about being poor. It's about not wanting to be some ordinary wifey person stuck in some boring dude's life. Her father idealized her so she is too good for anybody. That's her secret smile. ❤
It amazes me that this song gets virtually no airtime on the radio and that it didn’t make the charts. It’s better than some of her more well known hits
I'm sad that she didn't continue in this style on her follow up albums. Liked it best with her musicians from "Tuesday night music club", Bill Bottrill and Co
@@candylounge7962 Agreed. but it is very likely the change prolonged her career. Her album "Threads" debut was at #2 on the US country charts and she was 58 at the time.
She was born in November 1963 The day Aldous Huxley died And her mama believed that every man could be free So her mama got high, high, high And her Daddy marched on Birmingham Singing mighty protest songs and he pictured all the places Where he knew that she'd belong but he failed and taught her young The only thing she'd need to carry on He taught her how to Run baby, run baby, run baby Run baby, run So run baby, run baby Run baby, run baby, run Past the arms of the familiar and their talk of better days To the comfort of the strangers slipping out before they say So long baby loves to run She counts out all her money in the taxi on the way to meet her plane And stares hopeful out the window At the workers fighting through the pouring rain And she's searching through the stations for an unfamiliar song And she's thinking about the places where she knows she still belongs She smiles the secret smile, and sure she knows exactly how to carry on So run baby, run baby, run baby Run baby, run So run baby, run baby Run baby, run baby, run From their old familiar faces and their old familiar ways To the comfort of the strangers and slipping out before they say So long, and baby loves to run And she's searching through the stations for an unfamiliar song And she pictures all the places where she knows she still belongs And she smiles the secret smile because she knows exactly how To carry on So run baby, run baby, run baby Run baby, run So run baby, run baby Run baby, run baby, run So run baby, run baby, run baby Run baby, run So run baby, run baby Run baby, run baby, run So run baby, run baby, run baby Run baby, run So run baby, run baby Run baby, run baby, run
I LOVE this song - without a doubt this is definitely one of my 'desert island discs'. The emotion in Sheryl's voice, the sound and rhythm of every instrument, makes this possibly one of the best songs I've ever heard. Also, would have to nominate this as potentially one of the best album 1 - side 1 - track 1's ever made.
This is the only album of hers worth listening to. All others are nothing as far as I'm concerned. If you like it, that's cool. I like her and I hope other people like her later works, but not for me.
A lot of memories during a crucial time period in my life weigh for me on this track. Bad, good, very emotional song for me during a time that had 2 paths, if i took one of the paths i would probably not be here anymore, the other one is where i am today. Thx for making me run in the right direction Sheryl.
Huxley = one of the great writers and visionaries of the 20th century. Sheryl crow = one the greatest singer songwriters and musical artists of modern times. artistic siblings.
Sheryl's best song by far for me, the lyrics, the emotion, it's a masterpiece, every time she sings the line run baby, run you can hear the emotion in her, and it just takes me away to a peaceful place every single time
I had also such a venture! I was waiting at the telephone to talk with the library for some books for my son, and I waited and waited and waited, this song in background. After half an hour they answered me and my first question was:"Please, give me the title of this song!" I was fallen fully in LOVE with it… and I still am! So many feelings, a mix of desperation, hope (it's contrary), power, rebellion, fight and escape (another oxymoron!), trust in themselves and mistrust anyone else
When my wife and I met, we would go to a local bar where an awesome band would cover this song. Listening today brings back great memories and still a great song.
From Russia with love. No boundaries for wise people. Thank you for not one word about politics. Listening for you for 20 years. You never been to my wonder Russia. Do not care. For I know why you've been through all my life. Never visiting USA. Or never will I be. Through politics. Through truth. I love Russia. I love USA people. Not government. No way.
Just rediscovered this song. I'm 27 and last time i heard it i was 10. I'm so happy right now! Took a screenshot and added it to all my playlists. Won't forget about it again!

Absolutely the best from this talented woman! I can listen to this 10000 times and alwayse look forward to the next line and the next lyric. Just love all of this song. I love it..... not like it!
