Spent a small fortune these past few years on shade products. Upgrading from a metal frame - vinyl cover "easy up" to a Red Suricata (same family of concept as the Neso), I am a fan of the Shibumi. One pole (granted a large one). A lightweight material and one bag to fill. It took a few minutes to set up (Under 10) and I could do it alone if put in the situation. Same with taking it down. By design, the Shibumi flaps in the wind, and I'll need to be respectful of my beach neighbors, however, I actually ENJOY using this type of beach shade now. An old-school "easy up" isn't easy. It takes 3 people and weighs 30 or 40 pounds. The Red Suricata is much lighter, but it gets cumbersome to do alone. Insert the screw anchors, and set the poles. Fill the four bags, and stretch the material over the poles. The poles start to fall over as the cover is pulled or your final shade tent has poles that look like this \ / . Redo the poles and anchors and then you find the nylon material is catching the wind and flapping like it is a Shibumi. We likely will take both now on our beach trips as the Red Suricata is good for non-windy beach days and the Shibumi needs wind. Shibumi will be my defacto first attempt at shade and we liked it so much that we also bought the Shibumi Mini for when it's just the two of us. The noise of the Shibumi is louder and we don't want to come off as "beach holes", but there is no question they are growing in popularity, so we're in like company.
@BeachGearGuy

That was fantastic, Jason! Thanks for sharing. It's a good idea to bring a few different beach shades so you can roll with the weather and the amount of space available at the beach. I bought a Shibumi Mini and the Solbello Beach Shade to compare the two. The Shibumi Mini is the most portable shade I own, but I like the Solbello because it can adjust as the wind shifts.

Shibumi shade for me , In the over 40+ times I've used it at the Atlantic ocean and gulf of Mexico, only 1 time was there not enough wind to hold it up and that went away by 2pm. I have both the Shibumi and Neso Grande and both are useful. The Shibumi cannot be topped in high winds. Yes, it's loud but I know it's going to stay up effectively. I found the Neso in high wind to be stressful haha The Neso in a light breeze is THE BEST. The coverage is great, it's quiet, and just a vibe. The Neso takes me way longer to set up and is a pain to do without a shovel because I always bury the bags and digging is hard to do by hand. The Shibumi is ridiculously easy to put up. The Shibumi is aggravating when you only have a light breeze and it's blowing out to sea. The sail constantly flops and blocks the view of the ocean. Also, it really doesn't provide much shade in this situation. Overall, as aggravating as it is to buy both, they really are like a Venn diagram of beach shades. There's a middle ground where both work great and then extremes where you need one or the other.

Thing is awesome this way, in any wind condition, and with four poles, much nicer and way more shade room. Well, just to follow up, I did use the orange stakes on a neso gigante. The only difference was that I made a hole first, I bought the drill bit for the orange stakes, and I drilled them in the sand and buried them, omg, they held better than the sandbag and to avoid flying orange stakes I inserted the rope to the hoop of the stakes and then to the sides to keep them from flying if they would come of the ground, thanks for the idea, it beats filling the sand bags

Great review. I have two Shibumis (larger and smaller) and they work great on most US beaches with a steady onshore breeze. However, I tried using them at a couple of beaches in St. Barths which have strong winds that frequently shift directions (the beaches have tall hills around them and the wind swirls in all directions). You said that the Nesos also should be "pointed into the wind". Have you come across any beach shades that perform well in strong winds that constantly shift?

i have both and the shibumi is always my go-to bc of the ease of set-up (am often by myself on the beach). it’s so much faster than the neso (and i’ve never had it collapse on top of me, unlike the neso). and if the wind shifts, you just pop up one pole and pop it back into the sand a few feet away. that said, there’s a sound-side beach that i go to and the wind direction and speed are more erratic than beach-front, so i schlep the heavier neso there. -the shibumi is $$ but the attention to detail that went into the design, as well as the quality of the materials, make it worth it if you can afford it. but both of them will last far longer than any surf-shop umbrella.

@@BeachGearGuy can't these poles be interchangeable? Does one set of poles seem to be best? I understand that the difference in length but if one is stronger, could you not use the gigante with shorter stronger ones? Maybe have 2 short and 2 normal poles? Normal days and windier days? Also can still use all 4 and keep a slight sun angle? Just some thoughts, curious if you tried any of these. Thanks for all you do!

Did you find the darker color radiated heat a bit more than the lighter color?

Yes. Light colors reflect heat, and the dark colors absorb heat, so it's actually cooler under the black Neso.

The Shibumi seems like chaos at all times. Not relaxing at all.

The shibumi is so fast and easy to set up it is worth the price. If the wind shifts it takes about 10 seconds to rotate on end of the pole to adjust.

Yes! This! I returned both the Shibumi and the mini for this exact reason. Was not realizing at all!

One can hear a Shibumi flapping half way across the beach. Very annoying.

These things take up a whole lot of space on a beach. If you wish to use these on a popular beach, please don’t.

Oh hell naw. The shabumi has more cons than pros. The nesso ones are much better.

Unless you’re in NC. I tried a Neso and it was a goddamn joke. The tent poles danced in the wind like you would not believe. We tried for 30 minutes to put in more and more sand and get it tighter and tighter til it felt like it was about to bust while the people with the shibumi laughed their asses off. The poles in the Neso are just too unstable over 12-15mph. They dance around like they’re gonna fall at any second. You see hundreds of shibumis and zero Neso. There’s a reason for that!
