Just make one. As in books. This film was made for professional photographers who watch this channel if there are any. Many of us were brought up in a photo-culture that made us believe there was one way to make a book. Arduous, expensive, grand, and in the hands of someone else.
Print-on-demand technology arrived in the early 2000s and yet it still feels like many of us haven't utilized the technology enough to fully comprehend not only how it works but how best to take advantage of the specificity.
Enter the idea of "just make one." An edition of one is a liberating, inexpensive, and strategic thing. Take my word for it because I've been using this strategy for years. Not every book needs public acceptance. Not every book needs an offset book run. Not every book needs a fundraising campaign. Not every book needs a publisher. Not every book needs to be a revenue stream.
One thing I often see getting lost in the bookmaking shuffle is the idea that compared to what else we have to do in life bookmaking is supposed to be fun. Yes, fun. There is nothing wrong with that. Not every step of your photographic life has to be life and death serious. Just explore, make something, and move on with your life. When the time comes to invest in a full-on publishing project, great, but until then explore the tools at your disposal and just make one. These little experiments, some costing less than five bucks, can lead to all kinds of things.

This was a great one. The power of one. "Are you going to sell it, are you getting paid?" seems to be the first question on every pro photographers mind when I show them anything I have made. We are creators. There is such a thing as the joy of creating. We are not used car salespeople, we are supposed to invent and create and how will we do that if we only concentrate on bottom line on a spreadsheet instead of making prints and books and one-offs and break all the 'rules'.

Hi. I worked in the book trade for many years and enjoying your presentations. I worked at Stinehour Press and Meriden Gravure. Graduated from RIT in photography and print. Now living in Vermont retired from Vermont University in Graphic Design. Printed many fine art books through my years and a avid book person. Photography has always been my passion. Blind in my right eye I look at images in a different ways. I appreciate your passions. Harry W. Mueller

The word 'inspiring' gets thrown around willy nilly, but Dan you should be in the thesaurus against the word 'inspiring'. I have heard you on on other channels and podcasts over the last year or so and I have now just discovered your own channel. Last year I decided to make a photo book for myself, based on my visits into London over an 8 year period & document the life there. I really enjoyed the process of putting the book together and I ordered a Trade Book on Blurb. I was astounded at the quality I got for less than £20 and felt proud of my achievement. No one outside of my family will probably see the book but that's great, as it was made for me. I now have 3 other projects on the go that I will make into books. One book on Photos I have already taken and two on new photos I will take this year (projects). I will now work on my book layout skills as well as my photography! Thanks and keep putting your fantastic insights onto youtube Dan.

Trade Books are a real deal not to mention one of the more strategic products we make. Endless options. I just decided my ongoing project will end in trade, 8x10, hardcover with standard black and white or maybe even econ black and white.

Daniel, I disagree, I think this video is an inspiration for all photographers, including rank amateurs like me. Everyone can start a photo project and these days self-publish for virtually no cost, with a variety of intentions from, just having a single copy in your hands, to creating an inspirational masterpiece, and everything in between. Thanks for another great video!

Yes Dan, it all worked well today and even your hair was well behaved. But more importantly, you are absolutely correct about self-publishing and the magic number is just 1. All must take that first step, make their first book, and move from zero to hero. Not only is it great fun to make and view, but a great lift to one’s self-belief when the book is in the hands for the first time!

Thanks Dan, this is one of your best. I am completing a long term personal photo project that has me working with 2 or 3 libraries each year. I take a lot of images each time but intend to only use one or two in my final product. As a 'thank you' to the owners/operators of the library I provide them with a book showing the good (and the fun) photographs taken around their site. One book specifically designed for a particular recipient - drawing on the relationship we have developed. Every relationship is different. Every book is different. It always goes down well. Cheers.

Damn @Dan Milnor, All the feels, all the thoughts, all the inspiration. Every. Single. Time. Not a Pro, not even a hack. I shoot want I want to shoot, oblivious to what anyone thinks or says. Just one goal, to take great pictures, to learn how to, difficult task in this subjective world. I don’t care, I can’t, otherwise I’d bin my cameras. Now to print. Tip of the hat to you.

Level makes no difference. Unless you are talking about fun factor. I know really good photographers who are miserable when it comes to their books. Stressed, angry, no fun to be around. And I know unskilled photographers who love every image they have ever made and love every single book they have ever made and are just thrilled to be able to make pictures.

My last trade book with blurb was titled “adventuring,trespassing,photographying” a book about my four weekend camping trips with my daughter in a barely post lockdown UK. It was a decent thing but lots of folk just said photographying isn’t a word which was my main point missed by most. I don’t care as it’s a good product that she will keep and show her kids and tell them about how good a photographer their Grandad was. No one will know what their grandparents looked like soon.

Bookmaking and photography become much more enthralling once the practitioner has learned to love the expression "I don't care what anyone thinks." I know it did for me. I was born with this mentally which has served me well in a world of rapidly conforming "creatives" bent on being popular. I say you did well. You completed a project and book and left something behind for someone else.

I want to thank you for inspiring me with creative new approaches to book creation. I've created 22 book projects using Blurb over the last ten years but with the ideas you've shared, my mind has ignited with new possibilities for my future book projects. Your paintball related book concept ignited the idea that the physical product doesn't have to remain pristine but can be further embellished and defaced to suit the subject matter in a creative way. Most books I produced were for my own consumption but I also had friends that saw them and wanted copies so I made a few public for their benefit. Because of your examples, I've also created one-off books and journals to give as gifts, personalized for the recipient with images of mine that they specifically related to and admired. Thank you and please keep sharing your ideas.

You are 2/3 there. Embellishment is spot on. Wait till you see some of the others I have done. Even stranger than these. And, if you want to take it close to the vest you could have book debossed or embossed, etc. Something more traditional than a paintball gun.

My god that was so cool when it came out, ohh to be transformed and watch that on a Betamax cassette now and then jump onto a ZX spectrum afterwards. @@DANIELMILNOR505 - I actually tried out 3 formats for the zine during testing: magazine, trade & photo book. I can't begin to explain coherently how incredibly helpful this video was, Daniel. I've been on the fence about creating a book from a couple of my projects, and have found myself all the way down the rabbit-hole of publishers and self-publishing. I think it would also be fair to say that I've suffered a little with my mental health over this, as I've put SO much stock into the idea that my work is only decent if a publisher approaches me. The fact they never have, has fed me the line that, actually, I'm not as good as I would like. That may still be the case! But your video has given me permission to go ahead and make the bloody thing anyway, and to maybe just create the book for me. If anyone is interested in buying it after the single print, then great but, if not, I still have a copy for myself. Thank you, genuinely!
@DANIELMILNOR505
@DANIELMILNOR505 3 года назад
Damn, wrote you this long reply and YT ate it. What I was saying is that you are not alone. A lot of folks feel that way about being chosen by a publisher. The problem for me is that what I see and hear from the field is people being chosen because they are willing to pay. This can still be a good thing depending on where and how those books are used or placed. But, when people think they are going to make back their money it can be heartbreaking. We are talking apples and oranges however. Learn the tools, use them based on project, timeliness and budget and then move on.

@@DANIELMILNOR505 Thanks Daniel. Again, really appreciated (I know how busy you are, so appreciate the response!). What I can now say, is that I've taken my project created out of the first UK lockdown last year and turned it into a single copy book from Blurb. It's my first time, so all very exciting. Not that expensive either, so it could be something I do on an annual basis. What I DO feel, though, is a lot of pressure off my shoulders to get to the level where someone may approach me. I'm not sure I care now - thank you for that.

Did this for the first time last year. Made a book for my partner celebrating our lives and gave it to her for Christmas. When she showed it to her mum, her mum got so emotional she burst into tears. There's something more powerful about a book - the permanence, the effort it takes and the power of a printed image that looking at images on a screen just doesn't have. I've just done a second one in black & white for my friends and our regular Friday night meals together, which I'll surprise them with on Friday (of course) just before our zoom meet. I don't care whether they like or not, I just did it as a memento for 2020. During lockdown, we didn't miss shopping, or going to work, or even the meals so much as our friend's company. When all the hard drives have crashed, codecs forgotten and cloud storage a distant memory, a book will still be around to be enjoyed in the future. Just do a book. It's a great buzz.

Also not a professional ... however I did produce a single book of collected images, but in the process of which I discovered something that was truly liberating. For much of my life (and I have been shooting since 1957) I have been wedded to the 3:2 format, recognizing along the way that this ratio in portrait mode leaves something to be desired. In preparing images for my book I started to ignore the 'fixed' 3:2 format and started cropping to best effect for the particular image, and the results ranged from 1:1 to something like 16:9 with no fixed limits. Being freed from a fixed format gave me a completely fresh outlook on photography.

Not a pro, but here's what I got out of my first book. You're right on, it's fun. The (rather obvious) discovery that putting my images together was mostly about the story and not the images - was a challenge that I think will improve my own photography. My first book was from a month in India - picked 100 images, and added minimal text. It's super convenient to whip out my book when someone wants to see images from the trip - way better than: "Sure, let me fire up Lightroom and we can sit at my desk...". Lastly, printing 100 8x10's and handing them out would have probably cost me more than the cost of a book, which was about $60 (cheap). What happened to the telescope?

@@DANIELMILNOR505 With a book you get to define the experience - can't underestimate how important that is. This isn't just sitting around a slide projector with friends - the reader gets something real in their hands, plus I get ton of compliments for my crappy images.

Last night, I place an ordered for my first book of 2021. I have a goal to just print as much as I can this year. We’ll see how it goes. Thanks for the encouragement , Dan.

Hey Dan, this video is a really great reminder of what leads to fulfillment and a meaningful engagement with photography. Although I've never met you in person and only know you from these glimpses on the Internet - as someone who has done the art school thing, I'll say that from a bird's eye view definitely looks like an art practice. In your internet book there is a similar concept/connection to On Kawara's date paintings, and as for the paintball experience there is an artist niki de saint phalle whose shooting painting I think you'd find interesting. Thanks for keeping it real, as an aspiring professional I appreciate this video. Paige W

Ok, I'm usually the first to join in a say "huddle up", "we're in this together", "we're all one, from the same source". Yep, I believe all of that from the bottom of my heart. But I'm thinking maybe instead of a huddle, we all need to hit the paintball field and blast each other into an oblivion of color with the battle cry "how do ya like reality now, muther f'ers!?" Sorry, just had to get that off my chest. Otherwise, this video was SO excellent and you are a creative genius. Because you make stuff and you don't take things to seriously about the making of that stuff. We can all be creative geniuses if we want to. You're teaching us how and that is awesome! Thank you Dan !! In 2020 I decided to put together my first printed project cause I really wanted to give all the photos I shot in my trips to New York a purpose, or maybe just some form of conclusion. So that's why I thought about doing it in the first place and then I felt like also giving the sales part a go. It's been an important step in my journey. I've had many satisfaction and also many uncomfortable realizations. Printing has really taken me to a different place in my photography perspective.

@@DANIELMILNOR505 I think the solo show is a bit of a black hole in online knowledge. A never read any references to its workings. Never had one myself unless the Welwyn Garden City District library and the Stevenage Leisure Centre count as an 17 year old in 1987;-). Stevenage, the birth place of Lewis Hamilton, its only claim to fame. Welwyn can be seen as the key location in the film, The World's End. That's some acquisition with the Warhol.
