What makes this scene even more heartbreaking was that things were gonna change after this. Shigaraki’s mom and grandparents finally stood up to his dad. They were gonna start protecting him. We got a glimpse of what could have been before it was destroyed.

Tenko seemed quirkless since his quirk came late. Unlike Deku's mom he didn't support Tenko because he knows what happens to Heroes. He has already lost his family once.
I heard a theory that the reason tomura itches is because his quirk makes it so he naturally has very little moisture. then he decays stuff and sucks the moisture out of it untill it turns to dust, which gives him moisture back and relieves his itching
@@thefluffyaj4119 Idk tbh, that's honestly what I assumed, as it makes a lot of sense. Tenko was 5 when his quirk manifested in the way we see now, but that's a year after most kids discover their quirk. And the way his family reacted to his "allergies" gives me the idea that it'd been happening for enough time for them to consult multiple doctors but he wasn't born with them. He only ever itched at home, which is where emotions ran high, and we see that his quirk manifestation was ultimately triggered by a strong sense of hatred. We only really see his scratching when he's agitated, and knowing Shiga that's when he wants to use his quirk the most.
This is not a choice. That quirk is a genocidal weapon, and he has to die. Sadly is not his fault, but theres no redemption for him. Ok so my guy Kotaro is one of the biggest hypocrites I ever saw. He says that heroes are bad because in order to save strangers then they have to hurt their families…but he goes and does the same thing to his own family?! I’m sorry, but what the HELL do you call that?!?
This flashback was so devastating and amazingly done! His sister was really pretty and she looked so much like Nana! Even though she was a snitch who betrayed him, its still a shame the brother/sister superhero team never happened! I think besides Tenko, the mom suffered the most because she was married to an abuser, watched him hurt her son, tried to stop him, but couldn’t, wasn’t able to stop her son’s suffering, then she watched her daughter die, then was murdered by her own son. It’s so tragic because this episode made his desire to be a hero so similar to Deku, that it’s easy to imagine an alternate timeline where he became a hero and didn’t kill his family. The dad did try to kill him after what he did (even though it was clearly an accident since he was 5, and the kid was clearly traumatized), but the mom, to her credit, seemed like she wanted to help Tenko when she reached out to him, even after what she witnessed. The worst part was the dog’s death. No one can change my mind. For me, the most disturbing part was the fact that I related to Tenko when he said he hated them all. I lived in an abusive household for years and was surrounded by people who were passive like his mom and grandparents and I remember thinking to myself on one of the worst nights that I hated everyone in my family. The fact that I related to Tenko so much is what scares me the most.
Of course it didn’t happen, she was a child and in a ab4s1v3 household, she obviously wouldn’t have kept it a secret if she could have possibly been in danger.
She wasn't a snitch tbh, just naive. But Tenko didn't realize that, he just assumed everyone hated him thus prompted Tenko to develop hatred towards his family, especially his dad.
Same! I felt so bad for him! At least the mom still loved him and wanted to help him after what she witnessed, but it was so devastating to see them all die! That would traumatize anyone, especially a 5 year old. For me the worst part was the dog’s death and how much I related to Tenko. I lived in an abusive household for years and when I was eleven, I remember looking at the people who were passive and did nothing to stop the abusive and thinking those same words, “I hate them all.” For me, that was the most disturbing part of the episode. Even though I didn’t become a mess murderer, it’s still disturbing!
I don't feel bad for Kotaro. I understand why he turned out this way and there is a small part of me that feels a little sympathy, especially if he saw Nana continuing her job as a hero after leaving him, but he chose to abuse Tenko and people like him are the worst. I think he's well written but I'll never like him as a person.
Not talkinf anout heroes equals abuse? The kid had every chance to be obedient eat his dinners play with his non hero toys but nah let's murder the whole fam instead completely unjustly. State of society today to excuse murder over a tiny amount of hardship his life was breezy mf.
I was the happiest seeing him get turned to mush, no sympathy for abussive behavior, especially towards family. Yes, he lived a difficult life, and yet he learned nothing of it. Instead of giving his family the life he wished he had, he gave them a life full of trauma. So no, Kotaro had it coming.
@@DafreshcutKotaro did everything he did to his family because deep inside, he was no true man at all. Also now that I think about it since you brought this up, it makes me wonder how many other lives Kotaro has ruined since he’s a businessman from what I know. How many innocent people besides his own family has he potentially targeted and has made to be miserable and would he continue to do the same to even more people if he were still alive?
Seriously, Shigaraki's origin story is so incredibly sad. And then to find out about the hands he wears....OMG. I was so devastated and sad for him on so many levels. And then to be taught to give in to his hatred and anger and to see what he is now....man. He is a great villain, but this back story.....so so sad.
As Master Oogway said “One often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it.” Nana tried to save her son by giving him up, but she inadvertently turned him into a cruel person and in turn created a broken monster.
@Pedro Ortega It's not Nana's fault. Kotaro is the only one to blame. He could hate his mother but still live a happy life. But instead he chose to wallow in hate and allow that hate to taint every aspect of his life.
@@lpallad1 Well i mean Kotaro SHOULDNT have went down such a dark path but being abandoned by ur parent at such a young age and seeing them save strangers and couldn't even raise u is not a good look. Kotaro was left with the thought that his own mother chose to save strangers over taking care of him. Its similar to the train track psychology question. Imagine kotaro being on one end of the tracks and then a bunch of innocent civilians on the other. In Kotaros mind, his mother sacrificed him, her own son and closest kin, to save the many. Obviously from a collective and objective perspective she made the correct choice. She succeded as a hero. But she failed as a mother. And now he failed as a father that pushed shigaraki to his breaking point.

The anime unfortunately cut a possible future reveal from the manga. In the chapter of this flashback, we opened with Tenko's mom apologizing to a mystery man who brought Tenko home. We don't see his face, but his physique suspiciously resembles AFO which makes it almost certain that AFO gave Decay to Tenko to jumpstart the tragedy and the prick might have had a hand in nobody trying to check on the family despite the Shimura house becoming a crater and no hero coming to check on Tenko in a busy street. While it doesn't change the facts that Kotarou was a shit dad and the hero society is heavily flawed, AFO also took away the chance of little Tenko getting a better life as his mom was starting to put her feet down and ready to divorce his father. Something that Shouto's mom couldn't do after four children and being pushed to her limits. There was a chance! Shimura Tenko could have had a more well adjusted childhood. He could have become a hero with his sister. Maybe Kotaro could have had gotten his act together too. But AFO is petty enough that he would twist Nana's family to besmirch her lineage as revenge.
The bad part is kotaro was realizing he was going too far and went outside to apologize to tenko,if afo didn't intervene here then things would have been so different
I’ll be honest, Tomura wasn’t wrong when he thought his family should’ve stepped in and stopped the abuse (that he received from his father). Instead of just standing by, watching it happen and making excuses for his father. If they all, done the right thing by helping and stopping the abuse, most likely Tomura would never have become a villain.

Shigaraki's father is such a pathetic man. He may have been a kid at that time but it should have been obvious that his mother was giving him away to protect from the horrible people she is fighting against that comes with the profession of a hero. She even left a note explaining her reason and showing that she still loved him for heaven's sake, but it seems he never had the mind to actually read it! Despite all those years he has never grown or moved on from it and instead created a household where his family are under his 'rules' and oppression, which is probably why shigaraki's family never stood up against his father, for they too feared him. And instead of trying to talk to his son and show him why he believes that heroes are monsters and is a path of suffering, instead he beat him and leaves him outside to rot despite his allergies. Even when he is inside his allergies go crazy around his father. His father has embedded so much fear within him that he is under a lot of stress for just being within his presence. Shigaraki's father deserved what was coming to him, he practically dug his own graves and refused to see the error of his ways and take account for his mistakes. Shigaraki's family did failed him for never really being there for him, but they were under fear and oppression as well, if things were different, they will probably be there for him ever more. They were even starting to finally stand up for him, but it took so long for them to build the courage, and it was far too late.
@@luis1237 Yeah, an act she should of done a long time ago, but she might've probably been psychologically abused by her husband due to the fear, oppression, and rules that he has established in his household and how aggressive he is to his whole family. Her husband even refuses to listen to her.
What in the actual heck are you on about? Are you for real? Kotaro clearly wasn't some psychopath. He clearly loved his family but let the trauma get to him. Yelling at your kid after they do something they were specifically told not to do is NORMAL. Slapping him was when he went too far, but he obviously felt regret right away and was willing to apologize. It was clearly a one time thing that had not happened previously. His biggest crime was literally being a overally strict and slapping his kid the one time he let his trauma get the best of him. I can't fanthom how out of touch you must be to think he's had it coming. He definitely didn't deserve having his entire family and himself murdered by his youngest son christ.
@@VG_164 "Scolding" your child is normal, but from what I have heard, the way a parent approaches or delivers said scolding defines who they are as a parent and how they affect the well-being of their own children and family. It is clearly hinted in several scenes that Kotaro has punished Shigaraki on several occasions, and each scene shows how much he has been traumatizing his own son, as evident where his allergies grow ever worse and seemingly "flare up" the moment Kotaro slapped him. Shigarki himself said "I Itch when I'm at home" in one scene, if his allergies are indeed caused by stress, then it is evident that Kotaro's established household was a stressful environment for his own son. It is even hinted that Kotaro himself has never properly explained why he doesn't want his son nor his own family to talk about or even associate with heroes at all. Kotaro believed that these punishments were going to be how he will teach his son to reject heroes, and because of this, Shigaraki doesn't know the true reason why his own father has been hurting him, to the point of believing that his own father hates him. In my point of view, this demonstrated how Kotaro's trauma practically defined him, for who he was as a person to his own family and as a father. I saw a household built upon rules, oppression, and fear, that clearly wasn't a positive environment nor the "Happy Family" that Kotaro desired, as stated by his own wife. In that very scene where Kotaro slapped his own son, his entire family watched and were too scared to do anything, his own wife begged him to stop, his own daughter pinning the blame on her brother out of fear of being punished while crying and clinging to her mother. If that wasn't evident of a abusive household run by controlling sociopath who believed what he is doing right for his family without considering how it will affect them? Then what is! Of course, Kotaro did felt regret after hitting his own son, but we were never shown any regret from him when he emotionally traumatized his own son all those previous times he punished him. The very moment Kotaro said "It would've been better if you just hated me", after reading the letter left by her mom, he lost whatever sympathy I had left for him. At that moment, he was nothing but a selfish sociopath in my eyes, that couldn't let go of the past and was willing to harm the very family he desired so he wouldn't have to face it again. If that was the author's intention to sympathize with Shigaraki as a character, then he succeeded, to the point that some would've almost cheered for him when he finally destroyed the very man that was supposed to be his father, yet striped his innocence away and unleashed the spark of hatred that would turn into an inferno, and engulf all of society. Which is what makes it ever more tragic when Shigaraki slaughtered his entire family, even his own mother that tried to reach him. It almost makes you think of what could've been.
Or what Kota would have been if Midoriya didn't save him ← that is only if Muscular attacked. If Muscular doesn't attack. Then that was how Kota would have been if his hatred continued to grow.
Yeah in real life sons are more likely to resemble their fathers as the Y chromosome stays near identical. It takes a number of generational jumps and cellular division before things get dramatically different. X chromosomes tend to mutate quicker on the other hand.
Does anyone else think that Dr. Ojako intentionally gave Tomura/Tenko the Decay quirk so that he would accidentally kill his family in order to drive him closer to All for One? Otherwise it'd be a very strange coincidence for Tomura to be born with a very destructive quirk that would allow for One for All to manipulate him into joining his side
Spoilers AFO was Kotaro's "family friend" and pretty much orchestrated whole thing. He recommended Kotaro to have another kid because his daughter was already too far to twist to the dark side. AFO took Tenko's original quirk factor before it could manifest. There was 1 panel in the manga where Old man in a suit walked Tenko home which was not included in the anime. It was important scene because in that moment when AFO held Tenko's hand, he gave "quirk which originally had properties to dismantle and reassemble material, and took away reassemble factor" and you get where this is going
Kotaru was truly the worst father that he abused his own son just from the word "Hero"... he didn't just indirectly doomed The whole Hero Society, but his son became the feared Villain because of him. How can Kotaru himself wanted a happy family but he clearly was blinded by unbridle hate towards Heroes including his own mother Nana... truly a horrible father he was but he never realize that he went too far just to proved his point towards Heroes.
Endeavour can at the very least admit that what he did was wrong, but this asshole refused to admit it’s his fault that Tenko went from a sweet and caring boy to a villain
This scene should also be a reminder to those who abuse their kids. Even if you harm them, their bodies will heal, but their minds, forever tarnished to the point they will kill you. If you had a terrible past where your mom left you for doing the right thing, don't take it out on someone who didn't deserve to be treated that way. I understand that his dad was angry that his mom left him to save him but there is no need to take it out on your own son. In the end that anger and hatred ended up turning his son into a villain!
Already. Kotaro could be happy even without forgiving his mother. He, on the other hand, hates all heroes in general because he condemns everyone for the sins of one. And in the end he takes out that hatred on those who have nothing to do with it. So what he did is unjustifiable in every sense.

As a kid you want to be the hero is an adult you understand the Villan tomura shigaraki is so relatable in real life situations most of us want to harm people but are reframed by sanity
@@Uknown76 no one does as a kid, especially when it manifests. It didn’t help that emotions can affect quirks and shigaraki was surrounded by nothing but contempt and fear
In my opinion, i think everyone in shigaraki family all have their own mistakes. First, Nana abandoned Kotaro to protect him from the AFO, causing Kotaro to grow up and become a family father who doesn't listen to others and is always harsh with his own children (beating Shigaraki while saying that the hero would do hurt your family). Kotaro does not appreciate his happy life (a good wife, 2 good children, perfect parents-in-law) but instead only focuses on what he does not have. But if asked whether he deserved to be killed or not, my answer would be 50/50 (not worthy of being killed because he regretted beating shigaraki, and worthy of being killed because he was beat Shigaraki with an iron rod). Shigaraki's mother and his grandparents were only wrong because they did not stand up strongly and always spoke up for Kotaro even though they knew he was wrong (but in my opinion this is just a small mistake and it can be overlooked). Shigaraki's sister was also wrong because she confessed that Shigaraki saw Nana's photo even though they promised to become heroes together (this isn't even considered a mistake because she was so young). As for Shigaraki, he is a child with psychological problems (as evidenced by the constant scratching of his eyes), he was restrained by his father for a long time (although it was not physically abusive, it is still psychological abuse). Things got worse when Shigaraki's father beat him because of his childhood obsession (it was even shown that Shigaraki's father was someone who refused to grow up to become a father). ). If Shigaraki was just a normal child, everything would be fine, the father just needs to apologize and not do it again, but Shigaraki has extremely dangerous abilities, he accidentally killed his dog, his sister and his mother and grandparents unintentionally, and while his mother ran towards him despite the fact that she had seen Shigaraki accidentally kill her daughter and that she herself would die, Then his father beat him with an iron rod, causing Shigaraki emotions to explode. This is a tragedy of a family, no one is completely innocent, although the fault lies mostly with the father Kotaro (because he is a coward who does not know how to appreciate what he has, existing, selfish and only thinking about himself, brutally disregarding his wife and children, beating his children just because of his past). As for Shigaraki, he was initially innocent, but just because he had such a terrifying ability and mental instability, the shock of personally killing his own relatives, he needed someone to blame and Kotaro was the one. Ironically that Nana left her child to protect him from the AFO but created something even more terrible later.
It was the father's own fault that Tenko became a Villain all because of his own hate towards heroes like his mother Nana, Kotaru had a family he wanted but instead letting hate clouded his own safety linked out to All for One... what's worse Kotaru indirectly cause his son into Villainy but in fact he acted like a villain himself but he never realize it or seeing the way he acted until he was murdered by his own son.
Spoiler: Its actually more crazy when we find out that AFO manipulated his dad and decay wasnt even supposed to be tomuras quirk becuz he was given it by AFO. Not to mention every single encounter in his life was orchestrated by AFO. His awakening, friends, love for heroes EVERYTHING. Feel super bad for him he literally got his original quirk removed by AFO when he was born. AFO was there from the START and played him.
Endeavor was just as bad. Shigaraki's problem was that no one could understand his quirk and he had no guidance. That's why he feel such hate towards the society, because they never helped him even though it was not his fault he couldn't control his quirk. Endeavor was a Hero, that's why he raised Todoroki to be a good person to the society, even though he was also a violent parent. Shoto wouldn't become a villian because society always supported his ideals and his powers were not seen as a curse. Meanwhile Tenko was abandoned by society after this because his quirk was dangerous and because no one tried to save him.
@@TheLatiosnlatias02 No however. Shoto was emotionally strong, and his childhood was not as terrible as Shigaraki's, because Shoto was not abused out of cruelty or hatred, but only as part of training. And even if he has real problems, it doesn't change that only Dabi became a criminal, but he was already crazy before that. Endeavor's other children also grew up with a normal mentality. Tenko, on the other hand, was a sweet and sensitive child, and therefore for this reason he was emotionally vulnerable to his father's cruelty. And her sister was a liar and a coward, because she lied to her father about her real intentions, and she also lied to him to save herself from what he would have done with her if she had known that she was involved too. So the whole family was oppressed and subjugated by Kotaro. However, this was not the case for Endeavor. None of them were that lax about what he did.
He took his son's dream so seriously and personally. I mean he is just a child, his dream prospects can still change. I don't remember how many times my dream changes when I was a child. Also I feel like his quirk was given to him by AFO.
@@forme7078 Boruto hated for a time his dad for being busy and at work all time. This is exactly the same thing here because Kotaro don’t want Tenko to go like his mother being busy and who didn’t give attention to her dear people.
NOOOO too sad. He deserved better. I mean from a small age he was groomed, brainwashed and manipulated to hating on the world and forced to wear the limbs of his dead family. It’s too much to blame him at this point. Deku is right it would be wrong to kill him
I hate to say this, but while Kotaro shoulders a great burden of Tenko losing his mind, Nana is also guilty in part. Leaving her son in foster care to protect him is absolutely ridiculous, sure it may have been with good intent, but you have to imagine how Kotaro would have felt being abandoned by his mother (also a note explaining her actions would mean jack shit to him since he probably thought she could be lying). There’s a saying and it goes “the pathway to hell is paved with good intentions”
But All For One had already murdered Nana Shimura's husband. If Kotaro had stayed with Nana, it would have been that much easier for All For One to track him down and kill him, too.
Even though she left him that note later they show that despite this she didn't leave without saying goodbye to him in person. And Kotaro KNOWS that the words in that note were sincere. And that shows how rotten he is. By stating that he would have preferred her to hate him, he shows that knowing that her mother loved him despite everything, and that she had gone against her will, for him, instead of being a consolation, is only a reason for further hatred. So the problem is entirely with him, not with his mother.
This is absolutely spectacular, I’m a fan of MHA, and have been since 2019, and season 5 impressed me, the first part was generally slow and there as no new antagonist introduced or prior antagonist character developments, but from episode 18-25 the story exceeded my expectations, this father may seem horrible, but genuinely speaking I understand why he forced his son to quit his dreams, because his father experienced a harsh reality to what a hero actually is, and doesn’t want his son to experience the same fate and be a man that leaves his family, and I just disagreed with the abuse, but the abuse was more of a sense of scolding, until His father actually hit him with a stick in self defense but that’s because he saw his loved ones die from his sons hands.
The show was honestly average until this backstory Arc at the end of s5 and it got even better from s6 right off the bat until the finale. It’s now honestly one of my fav shows. This backstory is one of the best you’ll see in any media
No however. Kotaro didn't want to protect his son. He simply hates heroes because he is an immature selfish person who condemns everyone for the sins of a few, and in fact instead of talking about the fact that his mother, due to her work as a hero, had had to make difficult and painful choices that led to her death, he imposed himself on his family with hatred, violence, and fear, insulting the memory of his mother. Kotaro constantly wallows in hatred and takes it out on those in his sights every chance he gets. He only knew how to complain about what he didn't have instead of appreciating what he did have. And that's because he's a selfish coward who doesn't understand that you can't have everything in life.
You want to know one of the most common factors in serial killers? Its that they were abused as children. Most people arent born bad but are shaped by the cruelities of life. Some push through others break and lash out the only way they know how.
That’s not the part he blames heroes for. It’s for nobody, not even a hero, coming to take him somewhere safe while he was on the streets. Let’s take the Joker’s analogy as reference to understand Tenko. He’s like the gangster about to be shot or the truckload of soldiers being blown to bits. Nobody panics. But if the mayor is threatened or kids with families and homes to come back to are threatened, then everyone loses their minds. He’s someone expendable and easy to overlook. That’s part of why he hates society so much. It’s the shallow presentation of justice and values. He may be right that there is a problem with priorities and fairness, but destroying everyone else for the failure to care for him in his hour of need isn’t it.
Me: *Before* "So, this guy was just naturally insane?" Me: *After backstory* "OK, so the DAD drove Shigaraki insane then... makes sense, since this would distort your perception of what a hero and villain is"
@@Athenabadassinthearena Hello? They literally turned a blind eye on a wandering lost child when he needed a helping hand the most and deceived him with sweet lies, all because of his appearance (oh no he looks bloody and messed up let's ignore and leave a 5 years old child alone in the middle of the streets). And that's not all, they even blatantly lied to him by saying eventually someone will, police will, a hero will save him while pushing away their basic responsibilities to help someone in need of saving thanks to their complacency and self interestedness, in the end, not a single hero was there to save him, but ironically the worst big bad of all time reached out to him of all people. Don't you see the issue here? Why are you oversimplifying his backstory and narrowing down to JUST his family when it's the combination and culmination of everything?
@@leeleelee4758 Yeah. Everyone abandoned him. They said the police or heroes would come to save him, but it doesn't change that they could have called them instead of assuming they'd figure it out on their own.
So Tenko's quirk is basically the opposite of Eri's. He speeds up living organism's aging process to a level that the organism he touches turns to ash/dust (but it doesn't seem to affect bodily liquids, only tissue) ..while Eri turns the aging/development process backwards even up to a point where the organism stops existing. If Shigaraki and Eri had a child, what would his/her quirk be, I wonder? One hand (one side of body) destroys by super-speeding aging while the other one restores an organism to earlier state? That would be wild...
@@absolutemadlad5662 YES BUT TIME FLOWS FORWARD IN MHA AND CHARACTERS AGE, SO one day Eri will be young woman and not 7yo child. My point was that IF Shigaraki's body and mind was rewinded (by Eri, obviously ...heh) to the age before his quirk activated and he was mentally trained to understand and bare the burden of quirk that decomposes organic matter, he could one day marry Eri and their kid would have REALLY INTERESTING QUIRK. Like mini version of the Scar guy from "Fullmetal Alchemist" but without scars and tattoos :-D
@@StarlingKnight something meaningless like that doesn’t need to happen outta nowhere because of mere curiosity isn’t necessary though. We can fantasise what it’d be like if people with such quirks have a child and what the child’s quirk will be like, maybe leave these two alone haha
Kotaro: Heros will hurt their families Also Kotaro: Slaps the sh! out of his son for just going through his study and saying a random person is his grandmother and didn’t ask who told him who told him that
Yeah, I've got such feels to all members of League if Villains. Most of them are victims of valid society system, kids whose didn't get proper help before they're reach their limit.
Society may bring people down, but the final decision at the climax of that one bad day is up to the victim. Do they hold themselves together or do they inflict their pain onto others? In the end they all made their choice to become criminals and they’ve all dug themselves too deep for redemption. The only justice then is prison without parole.
honestly they all deserved this they allowed a child to be abused by his dad and didn't do anything to stop it, I know that they were about to change but I'm sorry but it's a little to late for that.
"ooh poor shigaraki" "all it takes is one bad day" "what a bad father" get outta here npcs, you sob and agree with the majority until this kinda crap happens to you. Then you'll get sick and tired of all this sympathy for someone who does not regret what they did, even enjoyed it.
