This video shows the finishing process of the helmet bowl of a shiinomi-shaped helmet, which is being made under the guidance of the armorer Mr. Shindou Atsuta.
The eyebrows are temporarily fixed with small screws, and then rivets are used to fix them in place.
After that, the heads of the rivets are sunk to the same height as the steel plate.
To fix the eyebrows with rivets, first remove the small screws and widen the holes at an angle using a reamer.
This is to ensure that the heads of the tacks do not stick out as much as possible.
The heads of the rivets will be able to enter the diagonally widened holes, reducing the amount of head protrusion.
Starting from the center, five rivets are inserted one at a time.
After the brow eaves have been tacked, the heads of the tacks are sunk into the entire helmet bowl.
In order to do this work, we made a tool called "Byozu OTOSHI" (鋲頭落とし).
I made this tool by imitating a tool that I saw a senior armor maker make and use.
The materials are familiar ones that can be found at home centers.
It is simply made by inserting three metal spacers of 5.1mm inner diameter and 35mm length into an M5 100mm long nabekoneji, and fixing them in place.
Since the screw and the spacers are sposso because of the difference in diameter, we apply "sokui," a glue made by crushing rice on a strip of Japanese paper, and wrap it around the screw before inserting the spacers.
The spacer hits the circumference of the rivets to submerge the rivets on the front side.
From the inside of the helmet bowl, a rivet head drop is placed around the rivets and tapped.
Checking the head of each tack and using the rivet head drop, the tacks are sunk.
This is done because we do not want the heads of the tacks to stick out when we finish painting the shiinomi-shaped helmets we are making this time.
This is the end of this work.
Since this work alone is not enough to make the surface smooth, we will file the surface and apply a putty-like substance to the base of the surface to make it smooth for painting.
