My first attempt at growing Shiitake mushrooms on shredded wheat straw based substrate using the "Straw" Shiitake strain from Mycelium Emporium. Final block composition was roughly 50% straw and 50% sawdust/grain spawn mix by wet weight. I did experience quite a few mutants and aborts, many more than I typically experience on straight sawdust. This coupled with relatively meager yields hold me back from really calling this success, but it certainly can be done. I did manage to fruit some monster Shiitake that had great flavor and interestingly had a softer texture than the fruits I usually get on sawdust. I really enjoyed them.
