Taking a deep dive into the key mechanics of your baitcasting spool will lead to new perceptions on how to super tune the casting performance and overall fishing experience. In this episode, I take you for a simple physics-math ride, to explain the "Reel Deal" about spool weight from bottom up mechanics. You will understand why spool weight alone is not everything, what are the other factors that could largely impact casting performance, and the reasons why DC brake has modes dedicated to different line type, why Shimano's MGL spool drill holes on the side plate, why Daiwa's SV Boost implements a two stage braking force.
After today's video, I hope to help you be able to tell commercial hypes from actual practical improvements, and enjoy some simple tricks for super tuning the reel.

Im an Aircraft engineer and unboxings are very subjective. This kind of content is very rare but so valuable. Please do more of these!!! Maybe if you got new gear you could unbox them just because you have it, but if you could go over the features and explain them like this, it would be a fantastic way to get the best of both worlds. Tackle Advisors used to do detailed teardowns of reels and analyses their parts, but he’s disappeared from RU-vid. Talking about specs on the box is easy for anyone, but getting into the nerdy engineering aspects is a job fit for few. And you do a fantastic job! Your video on Shimano vs Daiwa was a super fresh insight I had rarely ever seen❤

Great point! I have not tested yet. By thinking alone, I believe mono and braided line tend to absorb water, FC is the least. Braided line is a little different, the coating and the way it was weaved together would likely have an impact on this. There are water caught on line and water absorbed into the line material, during casting, a lot of the water "caught on line" are thrown out due to centrifugal impact. I can do a simple weight test buy wiping off the superficial water of the line and then weigh the spool and compare. That will be quite interesting for another episode!

As someone who doesn’t understand math at all when the alphabet gets involved, THANK YOU for explaining it in a way that I can understand! I don’t understand why your channel doesn’t have a million subscribers! This is further proof of what I always say. Most fishing gear and baits are designed to “catch fishermen” more so than to catch fish.

I am not engineer, but i liked your video, because i like to know the way how world is working, escpecially my world. I also tune my baitcasters by myself, sometimes drilling them and cutting part of plastic holder, like i did with metanium 13 Weight reduction was about 3 or 5 gramms, helped with casting distance and stability of baits under 10rg

I loved that you broke it down. so we could get a better idea of how to improve castability With the different types of lines. It was very helpful. I also agree with some other comments. There is enough unboxing and reaction videos. We need more info like this on reels in my opinion.

Thank you sir! No you might be a C student but only because physics was not taught in the context of fishing :-) In general, F mode (for fluorocarbon) puts out the most braking force (or the brake works more time during the cast), N (monofilament, nylon line) second, P (PE, braided) the least. When using full capacity of spool (full spool of same line) it is recommended to choose the modes based on line type, if using backing for fluorocarbon or half spool, then F mode could sometimes be too much, and it is ok to use other modes. Unfortunately DC brakes do not fully librate our thumbs, so the finger brake is still needed here and there.

The technical side of things are much more important to me than unboxing videos. Technical that you dont need to be a rocket scientist to understand, this video was pushing that...ha ha The amount of reels and technology on the market in 2024 is very confusing for most people. - How do you choose what's best in a price range? - Are certain features really doing anything? - Can the average angler fish successfully with a reel under $50USD? $100USD? $200USD? - Are reels made in same factory? Like the Doyo plant? - What rods are actually as spec'd, moderate action is fast action from one to another? Just a few things to consider.

Thanks for the feedback. These are all great questions. Q1: subject to opinions so everyone has his/her own answer. Q2: Yes, but a lot of them provides marginal improvements, which I will explain in future videos. Q3: big brands $100 reels definitely yes! For instance the SLX and SLX MGL series, IMO is close to the Core Mg series sold a decade ago at $350 at that time. They recycle techs and molds etc. Q4: depend on brand. There are all of a sudden a lot of brands came out with reels, brands that had no business in fishing reel. This is not something you can just build the manufacture infrastructure over night and have a dozen models on the market the next day. So... Q5: Had a vid posted a year ago on my other channel, I used overlay vid editing to show what action and power is really about. I'll try to redo an English version.

@BassniperEng I was just trying to throw ideas your way. I'm in a decent place with my reels, I'm always open to learn more though. The rod question is due to so many companies not following any real standard. I can match specs between 2 rods, action and power, and the spec for line and lure weight is vastly different. I have a 7'8 rod good for 1/2 - 5oz lures, that with same power, action and length in another company that can't go over 1.5oz lure.

I have a question: should I fill a Daiwa SV spool WITH backing line (braid) and only then wind very thin braid (the diameter is larger, the starting power is lower / the spool weight is higher)? Or: should I wind the fine braid directly (the diameter is smaller, the starting power is higher / the spool weight is lower)? 🤔 Very good video!!! More of this!

When talking about different line type and its impact on spool inertia, what really matters is the density. Same type of material generally have same (or very similar) density. When using braided line, different diameter might result in some packing difference (i.e. thinner the braided line the tighter it usually packs onto the spool, thus resulting in slightly higher density than using larger diameter braid), but the weight difference caused by this type of packing is usually small, plus, when putting backing on deeper spools for braided line, usually we want to pack it tight anyways otherwise the thin braided line likes to dig into the spool. So I personally would just go ahead and use straight thin braided line, if I have to. That being said, when using very thin braided line, shallow spool is handy because it avoids the thick "backing" layers and thus avoids the digging issue. Hope this helps.

With diameter I meant the diameter of the spool including the line - having a nearly completely filled spool (with backing braid) or a spool with just 100 metres of thin braid (and therefore a small diameter of the spool including the thin braid). With the smaller diameter »spool/thin braid« the line is harder to be pulled out (started to be pulled out) because of the smaller lever. But the overall weight (spool / thin braid) is lesser than using the same spool with backing line and filled to the top. There the lever is longer and therefore the line can be started easier - but the overall weight of the spool + backing line + thin line are higher. So what is better for casting (with / or without backing line)? 🤔

Got it. Yes the diameter part will be discussed in the next video. It is a tricky one, for the two spools you are comparing, with the increment of diameter comes the weight as well. I'll do more detail in the next video but essentially the casting process is an energy transfer process, where the lure's initial kinetic energy and the rod's potential energy from bending is transferred into lure's new kinetic energy and the spool's rotational kinetic energy and heat caused by all the frictions etc. What we fisherman really care about is the lure's new kinetic energy (if say we want to achieve longer casts), the less energy lost on the spool and friction, the better. In the case of casting super aerodynamic (very low air resistance) lure using super thin braided line (low friction with guides and reel's level wind), an equation can be derived based on the conservation of energy. In that equation, the mass of the spool, the relative radius difference due to different amount of line, and lure weight are all present to determine the residual kinetic energy in the lure after the spool reaches the same linear velocity as the lure. It is a complicated relation and needs actual number to solve, but, an easier way is, to test, which is what I am going to do in the next video.

What kind of fishing are you planning to use these reels? The 24 Met DC comes with some more "responsive" or accurate DC brake, plus the external dial for main modes and MGLIII spool. And the spool is slightly smaller than Scorpion, narrower too. I'd expect the casting performance of Met DC to be quite good, and should suit low weight lure. The biggest practical part of the DC for me is to be able to cast directly into the wind. If I was to choose, I'd go Scorpion DC if I throw relatively heavy stuff more often, Metanium DC if going after things less than 1/4 oz more often. Metanium does weight about 1.5 oz less than Scorpion.

This reel is mainly for bank pond/lake bass fishing. What I should have asked was about the 15 Met DC compared to the 22 SLX DC XT. I watch a lot of fishing videos and I must say, you have my respect on reviews. Thank you so much for your knowledge.

If we watch John Daly hit a golf ball 300 yards it's only in the air for 7 or 8 seconds. If anyone could cast a bait that far it wouldn't spend any longer in the air. So any reel that runs for more than 4 or 5 seconds on its own is going to need manual breaking at some point to prevent an over run.

does that mean a littler spool will cast better because i have two daiwa tatula elite 100 size casting reel and just put some litter spool in them i think the shock daiwa tatula elite spool weighta about 14.1 gram with out and the spool that i put in are from amzon and they weight about 11.3 without line and the Line capacity on the aftermarket spool are P.E 1.5-130m one i will put on 10 lbs braid and the other 30 lbs braid so will there be any benefits

Reduce the total weight of spool generally helps with casting performance, but again the inertia is also dependent on the mass distribution (or effective radius k), the mass distribution of the spool is the one in a black box, will need to test and find out. I was not aware that amazon sells spools. Gonna take a look. Thanks for the heads up.

Hi, we need more videos like this to hold American content creators accountable for the BS they spread. There are so many reel review channels with people who just repeat facts that they heard somewhere that aren’t even true. Then, you see another channel start repeating those same false facts and soon everyone is saying it and none of them know they’re wrong. It’s super cringey to see. Thank you for giving the actual physics behind it to make it clearer. I’ve almost pulled my hair out many times hearing idiot RU-vidrs prove how ignorant they are by trying to explain something that’s totally wrong.

Mass will always be a factor by the larger margin. It is easier to make a spool light vs. The perfect geometric shape spool. But both are important for optimum performance
