Shimano lever diaphragm replacement

If you ever overfill shimano brakes and accidentally over-pressurise them, you can have leakage from the end cap - this is oil escaping from the diaphragm. There's limited info on the web, so I made this video to show how it is possible to replace the diaphragm.
Also worth noting: I discovered that o theory it is possible for the diaphragm to leak without puncturing too.
*disclaimer* at this point in time I have not checked the brakes on the trail extensively, but so far they are doing well.

Thanks! Just recently had a similar situation. You helped me to understand the construction of that diaphragm and that oil can come out under pressure around that rubber peripheria. I charged my brake system and it was OK. When I changed new pads it turned out to be over pressure in the system and a bit of oil was thrown out of that diaphragm. it works now but not satisfied with the handbrake range with the old support.

Just come back from the Alps - 5 days of 4000 - 6000m of descent a day - I feel this has now been tested 😅 - it works

I inspected it and mine had a small pinhole in it. The plastic it wad covering had a small mold defect and poked a hole in it. Thank for this very informing video. Without I would not have been brave enough to tackle this. Cheers

Im replacing mine right now. I took off the lever and the plastic shim underneath where the metal dowl pin goes. Its much easier to access.

You are slightly wrong there's no pressure created in the area of the bladder. It is there to compensate for the oil used from piston displacement and it is effectively filled with atmosphere pressure through the end hole and stops the system cavitating. All the pressure is applied by the internal piston passing the oil way holes, sealing off the circuit and continuing to push transfers the pressure throughout the system and as the only moving part from then on it pushes the piston out. I appreciate your video for the tip of getting it out though so thanks.

Thanks for sharing. I lost my grub screw. Can you please share the Shimano part number for a replacement?

NOTE if ypu only release the grub screw rather than remove it you wont have the same issues replacing it afterward!

Have now been running this lever for about 6 months, as a guide: take it from me; this has worked - good luck folks!

I found myself in the same situation. I couldn’t find the part for the XT brakes but I found it for the XTR. Slightly different but I thought it was worth a try. I just finished it and about to install it back on the bike. I see that you also have the XTR part which is slightly different. Any issues long term?

Not so far - definitely some differences in fit but no leakage as yet.
