The 2021 Shimano School kicks off on Tuesday, April 27 with special guest Benny Ortiz, pioneer of the slow-pitch jigging technique. JP & Ortiz will discuss the tactics, techniques, and gear that Benny has used to land over 80 species of saltwater fish from 50 to 2000 feet of water. This is a Shimano School that every saltwater angler will enjoy. 8PM EST... we will be taking your questions so have them ready for a pioneer in the Slow Pitch Jigging game! Benny, do you recommend the grappler over the game type for a beginner? Also what do you believe is the best all around power rating? I noticed you used heavier jigs on the 330 rated rod. I just can’t afford multiple set ups but want one that I don’t feel like I have to upgrade later. Thank you

I notice you use up to 400 grams on the medium. Why not move up to the mh rod? I’m having a hard time deciding between the 2

Benny love all your info,but you went from representing some of the best gear available to heavy sub par shimano rods/reels .What happened to temple reef/accurate valiant set ups you loved to represent through trial and error based on trying every reel/rod combo on the market.I would never fish shimano rods they are no where near some of your high end jigging rods that are on the market. Ocea jigger is the only decent tool shimano makes for spj in my opinion.I do understand that you can get your word out to a bigger base,you are a great teacher of spj ,some of the most use full on point info out there.

Looking at the Grappler Slow J and want to try it on inshore bluefin tuna up to maybe 100 lbs. Mostly fishing in 100-200’ using 100-150 gram jigs. I’d get the ML based on jig weight range, but leaning more towards the MH based on line size (Looking to use 50lb braid). Will the MH work with the lighter jigs? Will the ML work with the 50 lb line? Or should I just give up on catching bfts with this gear and stick to my regular vertical jigs? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Slow pitch rods are designed to work the jig, not necessarily fight the fish. I would look for rods based on jig rating and what they are designed to work. 50lb line should work so long as you have your PR or FG connections down pat. Otherwise you may run the risk of having your line-to-line connection bang through the guides. 40lb should probably do for the class fish you're looking to fight. If fished the rods with 40lb PowerPro and 60lb fluoro leader with no issues. Once you're hooked up, remember - the fight on this gear is point and crank, not lift and pump. Good luck out there
