*Nice reel so far **enjoyable.fishing** recommend used it for about an hour after getting it from Amazon and functioned flawlessly. Very smooth retrieve and the anti reverse is perfect. Feels like a reel that would be double the price.*

Extremely pleased that you posted this video; however, as others have commented, oil is no substitute for grease. In addition, it is not suggested to insert oil into the body of the reel. There is grease inside which would thin out. Either leave it alone or open it, use a solvent to remove the grease, and then re-grease it. And, last but not least, the most important maintenance to a spinning reel is the drag. The drag washers should be, at the very least, cleaned and lubricated. At most, they should be replaced with carbontec washers and lubricated properly. But, again, I thank you for your video -- it's more than I've done for the fishing community.

I've never done this before. The video is great. Two questions/comments others mentioned that I'd like to clarify further: 1) What about oiling the line roller? 2) What did that comment mean about "indexing the gears"? Thanks very much!

If your reel has been exposed to saltwater environments you should ALWAYS rinse it off thoroughly with fresh water before storing it to remove salt that may corrode the reel, a cleaning as shown in the video is probably the safest way to go after use. Sounds like the reel needs to be dismantled and inspected for salt damage. Salt water may have gotten into the bearings and corroded them. If the reel is noisy, follow the instructions in the video first...

Soo essentially the main gear, entire worm gear, a couple bearings just sit inside the body and collect all the grease from the pinion. If you don’t open the sideplate and clean it you’re just building up a stockpile of muddy grease. It’s just a few screws, you could actually not even disassemble it but just clean it out!

In my opinion the tutorial was pretty good all my reels get the side plate removed an 100% Synthetic grease gets applied to all gears inside the body. Just my preference. 1 little drop of oil there doesn't cut it. And you missed maybe the most crucial part of the reel wich is the line roller. Good thing I maintain my reels myself. No affence but big slip up. I have sum inexpensive reels that don't even use a ball bearing there so to me it's a critical lube spot.
@AnglingAuthority
@AnglingAuthority 11 лет назад
No, depending on the manufacturer and size of the reel (1000, 2500 or 4000) they will have slightly different lock nuts. A good wrench set will have the size you need. Just be sure to use a wrench as shown! The brass nut can easily be ruined or stripped, not to mention the finish on your reel...In the video I used a 12mm wrench (metric)

Great video thanks! Do you have anything that shows how to maintain the bail assembly? I have a Stradic 3000FJ with a rough bail mechanism. Thanks again!
@AnglingAuthority
@AnglingAuthority 10 лет назад
Recently Shimano has re-designed the bail on its spinning reels to something that is not durable (in my opinion). Older reels benefit from a solid bail design that needs little to no maintenance. If your bail doesn't flip smoothly, you may have dirt or grime in the mechanism and spring. Taking the bail apart and cleaning/ lubricating will solve this. Just be careful with the bail because on some models the parts are under tension from the spring and may fly out.
@brentellis6453

AnglingAuthority.com Ya I got dirt/sand the bail assembly the first time out and when I tried to disassemble and clean it, I absolutely can't figure out how to reassemble this spring correctly so make sure that doesn't happen or else you might end up with an expensive desk weight.

you forgot one of the most important things on a spinning reel...the line roller! especially for those people fishing on salt water its the first thing that gets rusty and needs frequent cleaning and oiling...its exposed to water all the time because the line passes through it. there are even more things i would clean and re grease on a spinning reel...

Dis-assembly of the drag may lead to a novice putting the drag washers back incorrectly, making the reel malfunction. When considering that the target audience is beginner, the maintenance demonstrated is sufficient for regular usage. As I mention in the video, there is more in-depth maintenance that can be performed on the reel.
@originaloldpop8405

don't neglect the drag washer, extremely important to clean and re-grease it and yes you better index the gears or when reassembled you will get a grind that the thickest grease will not fix.

I use Ardent Reel Kleen. Its recommended by the manufacturer that you use a cleaner designed for reels. You can also use Isopropyl alcohol if you haven't got anything else. DO NOT use any WD40 or dish soap or anything else- it will leave residue.

Great video - thanks so much! I have Stratic CI4 and it seized up on me after a saltwater trip. This demo definitely helped and now the rotor spins smoothly - sort of. I stopped the video around 17mins as u mentioned that the rotor should spin smoothly with no noise and that is not the case for me. I think i still hear a little sandy/grindy sound so stopped there to see if there are any tips to get rid of that before continuing. TIA!

He did not fully disassemble(even though he said he did)... you need to remove gear housing plate(four screws and plastic gold plate thing) to get to the root of your problem which is either the oscillation pawl or main drive gear. spray with brake cleaner and regrease.

The thing about reels is they are made to break and they don't have parts readily available. If they break, just get a new one. Don't bother sending them in to get fixed unless it is a VanSTaal, but VS don't usu. break.

Guess I'm a little over picky when cleaning friction ring and clutch I switch to clean towels several times and wash oil from my hands before final assembly. I also use rubbing alcohol instead of any solvent. and I blow spool with compressed air. I also remove drag disc and clean them of dust. Not saying your way is wrong. I also split cases every two years. I also clean body when done because I don't want oil grease residue getting on my baits.
@AnglingAuthority

@AnglingAuthority

Jay G If you don't have an oiling port, skip that step. The oiling port was added by Shimano by convenience. If you are following the video, you are getting to most component which need to be oiled and cleaned.
@AnglingAuthority
@AnglingAuthority 11 лет назад
If your reel gets dunked in saltwater make sure you rinse it off thoroughly with freshwater asap. You want to flush the salt off of it and prevent the salt from starting the corrosion process. You should be OK with the cleaning in the video but if you want to get the gearbox cleaned out and greased I would have an approved service tech do it.

I would only use Shimano oil. That's what the manufacturer recommends. The Biomaster should follow the same basic tear down process as the Stradic even though components may look slightly different. I strongly suggest reading through your manual to verify mintenance procedures. But most Shimano spinning reels should be pretty close to this video.

If you don't have an oiling port, then you can skip that step. The gears are probably a sealed unit and don't require any more oil than what Shimano has put in them. If the manual doesn't refer to the oiling port, then the manufacturer doesn't want you to worry about it.
