I like the last pot. i bought one of these around 15 yrs old and must have got real lucky cause u cant find these trees ANYWHERE online. Unless u want to drop ALOT of money. And grow slow ur not kidding would take forever for this tree to bulk up. Im about to style mine now and get it into a nice pot so i can enjoy it . Great video

Nice work Jason. I am about to try and "bonzai" a Shimpaku I just got and wanted to watch you first to get some ideas and I did get some. I am very much a beginner so fingers are crossed I don't mangle the tree too bad.

I like the second pot - oblong, it gives the bonsai artist the opportunity to define and highlight the front of the tree..... I love the jin as well..... Great job Jason!

I liked your idea about bending the Jin , just thought your were going to cut it off. I liked the round pot , but either would look good.

Go for volume to give the tree a chance to fatten up- larger square pot might do

Agree with Ed. Hadn’t thought of using the jin like that. Really like that idea. Also on board with the round.

As usual, a well done, coherent explanation. However, there is another sacrifice branch option. I often bend/style them like stand-alone bonsai, and then air-layer them. When the air-layerings develop enough roots to be cut off and potted, they are practically ready-made trees. Besides the additional trees, this is a less drastic impact to the parent tree, since suddenly removing a large sacrifice branch can result in die-back all the way to the ground below the wound. Even so, I do like what you did with the sacrifice branch on this tree. Most people would not even think to keep it, as well as to thoroughly re-style and jin it.

Just getting into Bonsai but I like what you did with jin and I like the 1st square pot the best. I'll be ordering something from y'all soon enough! ;) Ordered my first tree from another supplier, went with a Jaboticaba. My 2nd week probably be a shimpaku juniper from a local nursery if I can find it. Great vid!

@FfRrNnNn
@FfRrNnNn 3 года назад
You can do a bonsai with everything. The foliage in a thuja is very long and leggy, not the best for bonsai. But if you like the specie, go for it!

@Blaydrnnnr

My two small Shimpaku, are not very compact. In fact, they are quite sparse in the foliage. I've been trying to get these two vigorous all season, but they resist. I cant tell if I am watering too much, ( some very small branches have browned out a died, ) or if the heat here ( About 2 months of straight 90+° heat.) is stressing them. They get about 5 hours of solid sun, then the 40% shade cloth shields them for the rest of the day. They do have alot of growth at the tips, but they are so sparse. My soil for these are fast draining, so I tend to water everyday when I get home, but perhaps its too much? Perhaps I need more organic soil in these.... I was hoping this year, they would have gotten far more dense then they are.

Round pot 2. The longer dead wood is more dramatic. Better option than a short a jin or cutting it flush.
