The one thing I love about Shin Godzilla is the fact that they went as far as Toho permitted to make this movie as realistic as possible. They even got the aura of radiation right. You know how "The Simpsons" always featured Springfield's Nuclear Power Plant having a radioactive green glow? Only found in cartoons. So this comes from a cousin of mine who works at a nuclear power plant (at least until they shut down the final reactor): radiation genuinely glows in a violet color.

The flesh eyeball toothy skin scene should of been in the film, gives it such a far more creepy vibe that it’s body isn’t just “morphing” but splitting apart in a horrific manner as it evolves

11:15 This moment is AMAZING. The fact that they let you look through the drone's perspective is just really nice, and the glow you see before losing signal is just creepy AF.

I've seen lots of people bash on Shin because he's "ugly" and "weird" while completely missing that: THAT'S THE POINT!!! Shin is INTENDED to be a terrifying, horrible, disgusting, repulsive, unsettling, uncanny, and in-human monster. Even if you think he looks cool or badass or nice, his main purpose is to insteal disgust, fear and awe. He's not a heroic or cool monster like other Godzillas. He's a scary, wild and "evil" Godzilla like the original from the first ever movie.

He seems more like a tragic being instead of a down right evil one.

I somewhat liked Shin's design, especially the evolution stages, but his attacks just stole my breath away. Shockingly beautiful.

Can you imagine how horrifying a Shin Hedorah and Shin Destroyah would be.

Ah. Yes. Shin Godzilla. AKA, "The only time since his original movie that Godzilla has been a proper, scary movie monster."

There’s something I noticed about Shin Godzilla. Almost every other incarnation of Godzilla can clearly control it’s breath. But Shin can’t. Look at his position, it’s almost like he’s vomiting. You combine that with all the radiation and the mutations, the creature has to be in constant, *excruciating* pain. It’s horrifying honestly.

Wearing a mask just to feel in character is something that I have to applaud.

Shin Godzilla served its purpose. It’s was supposed to be horrifying, and they nailed it.

“If committees defeated Godzilla, then Godzilla will become a committee.” Just image walking into a boardroom, and mini Godzillas fill every chair but one. A Godzilla pulls out the chair, patting the seat. you know this can end really well, or really badly, and theres only one way to find out.

I always loved how by the 4th stage he's evolved such a natural defence that he has no problem stopping right in his tracks to hibernate... Its like nature decides there's nothing anything can do to hurt gym him so he doesn't have to hide away

Godzilla's second form is legitimately the derpiest and most terrifying thing I've ever seen. I'll admit I laughed out loud when I first saw his appearance, but I also thought, "Damn, if I saw that thing crawling down the street towards me..." and shivered. It looks so silly at first glance, but the more you look at it the more you realize there's something so alien and unsettling about the dead look in its eyes, the way it spews hot blood from its sides as it crawls along on its belly... and then you see the path of destruction it leaves in its wake, and suddenly it's not so cute and funny anymore but this horrifying, uncomprehending, unstoppable force of chaos. I have no idea how the filmmakers managed to pull off this duality so well, but they seriously nailed it.

I always loved how primal they made Godzilla look in this film. He wasn’t majestic, or an awesome force of nature, here he’s just a force of pure primal destruction with a dash of body horror and intense revulsion.

Honestly, while I have never seen the movie and spoiled myself beyond belief, I find this version of Godzilla to be a breath of fresh air. It's a look back at his original concept from the 50s and amplified in terms of terror and despair. It's a new look at the nuclear fallout consequence of humanity. His design is 10x scarier, his abilities are far more deadly, and the hints of his pain in one of the soundtrack themes really play a good part in his existence. He was an accidental mutation from nuclear waste dumping. He is confused and perhaps scared while also constantly adapting rapidly. I bet he didn't even have intention in that kind of destruction. He just happened. And the horror of his adapting abilities definitely go on a larger scale when considering the humanoids on his tail as well as "proto-zilla" from the deleted scene of his dorsal fin piece replicating certain body parts on its own. Then there are the hidden concepts of his next forms that were meant to take place all the way to becoming some kind of omnipotent being entirely toward the end from mutating and evolving so much. It's even more horrifying to think about considering that these concepts were made with the help of a worker of Evangelion. I love Shin Godzilla more than even Legendary Godzilla and that really is saying a lot. I love everything about him and he brings me so much dread whenever I see his forms while allowing me to sympathize with his existence altogether. He is a walking mutation with so much tragedy around him.

Ambitious, absolutely horrifying, well done. I don't really care about godzilla really, but even so I applaud the boldness of changing so much, even though it borrows elements of horror like the Thing and resident evil, applying those things to something as huge and iconic as godzilla is something I've never considered before. I love the ending oh my god, freezing him just as he's morphing into a new form straight out Dante's Inferno, with tons of eerily humanoid features? Splendid! The question remains, what on earth was about to happen next, and how many forms would he go through if given the chance?

This was my first introduction to Godzilla, over 2 years ago. Thank you very, very much wikizilla!

Shin Godzilla is definitely the David Cronenberg of the Godzilla reincarnations I would think, just look how gory and undead he looks, his eyes especially freak me out when looking at them. The designer did an amazing job with that if that's what he was going for. The final form at the end of the tail gives off the most Cronenberg vibes to me.

Wait, I just realized! What if a diver was down there on an investigation with the waste right as godzilla was mutating, and they merged once they mutated!? That would explain the tail head's human jaws and the half-human hybrids, and why Shin Godzilla has the texture of rubber, from the probably rubber diver suit! I know, outlandish, but it's a possibility! EDIT: I completely forgot about the "guy in the yacht" part! Now it makes even MORE sense! (Thx for reminding me btw, guys!)

Shin Godzilla honestly looks as tho his very existence causes him untold agony, like all of his attacks are simply the response of an already hurt, terrified animal backed into a corner. His movements are shaky and erratic, like a deer or rabbit in shock, but violent like a wounded dog

Here in Japan we bought many toys of Shin Gojira. During the same era as Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger and Kamen Rider Build. Shingoji still the most scariest horror Kaijuu film. Many collaboration with Shin Eva, Shin Ultraman, and Shin Kamen Rider. But also Shinkarion anime in movie Alpha X movie.

TL;DR : The hate for the movie and Shin Goji comes down to ignorance brought on by cultural barriers. There's a reason why it was a major hit in Japan, whilst met with a lukewarm response here. For more detail, keep reading. I can understand if you don't want to read the whole thing, but I highly encourage you to do so, especially if you disagree. The more I look at comments and videos complaining about the design of Shin Goji, or the movie itself, the more I've come to realize that a lot of the hate for all of it comes down to people either complaining about his deign, or the plot and pacing of the movie. Or more accurately, I realized that they're pretty much missing the point. Don't get me wrong, it's fine to personally dislike both, but to complain about them, and hold them to a standard that it was never trying to achieve, is quite silly. Let's start with his design. A gross, mutated abomination that looks like it's been hit with an atom bomb? Skin is radiated, and looks like the original body as almost been melted down to the bone? Um....sound familiar? Yes. His design is the most accurate personification of the horrors seen in survivors from the bombing of Japan in WWII thus far, continuing the concept originally introduced for Godzilla in 1954. Most complaints are that he's too ugly, or disturbing. He's supposed to look like that. I doubt that many of the complainers have actually seen videos on the mutations survivors have suffered since that bombing, or even realize that there are consequences from it that rear its ugly head to this day! Here in the West, we look at Godzilla, see his charcoal black skin, and merely see it as a design. It carries no real emotional weight with us besides nostalgia...which is why you'll see people endlessly complain about his "design" and "power"between films as if that's the most important thing. It isn't. We complain about so many trivial things and miss the entire point of his existence. For japan, Godzilla represents a horrific time long past, that still has a devastating effect today. So in reality? His charcoal black skin? It's representative of the damage suffered by nuclear radiation and burns. It's not to make him look cool. It's symbolism. His atomic breath? The consequence of that attack, the anger, and the monstrous legacy it left behind. A symbolism of atomic destruction. So when it comes to Shin Goji, they pulled no punches with that symbolism. So the people in the West who dislike him and find his design horrible, offensive, and disturbing? Well, that's the point. He's supposed to offend you, He's supposed to look disgusting. That's the point. That's why I laugh when people say that Legendary Goji is more "true" to Godzilla's roots, mainly reciting his in-universe origins of being a mutated dinosaur...no..you missed the point! That's just a plot device! Legendary Goji represents the icon that Godzilla has become, while Shin Goji represents the symbolism which spawned his creation. So in actuality, Shin Goji is the most accurate Godzilla after the 1954 version. Legendary Goji is exactly what he's said to be: an American take on Godzilla. He was made to appeal to western audiences, and to cater to our type of storytelling. It's actually quite ingenious when you think about it. Now, they've unknowingly fixed the aforementioned issue- Toho's Godzilla will no longer be subject to cultural barriers in the west, because we have our own Godzilla now. Kinda sad when you think about it, as we should be more active in understanding their culture, and their symbolism behind the creature, but I guess Godzilla will at least have a presence here? Yay? As for the film, it's another thing that continues to be misunderstood, and endlessly compared to the American films, and even the Toho films after the 1954 film. People forget: This is a return to Godzilla's symbolic roots, albeit with a modern twist. Instead of the horrors of The WWII bombings, it now hits another sensitive blow to Japan's own government, and how there's a big problem with the government's effectiveness there. In the film, it is shown that their incompetence not only resulted in the unknowing creation of Godzilla, but the eventual devastation of the city due to their indecisiveness, and lack of action. That was the central theme of the film: The government stepping up, and taking action. The people of Japan uniting and being better moving forward. There are also some hidden comedic elements in the film too, but I'll get to that later. It's so funny how that simple plot, theme, and message went over the heads of so many people. For what Shin Goji was trying to convey, it did perfectly. It did so perhaps to well in some instances, causing some weird pacing, but all of those instances did have explanations in film to somewhat compensate for it. However, like Shin Goji himself, the film suffers from cultural differences and barriers. If you don't know much about Japanese culture, modern or otherwise, you'll most likely complain about how stupid the government seems in the film, missing the fact that...it's the point. For this reason, even that simple detail resonates much more with Japanese viewers than western viewers. Goes right over our heads. This is why I brought up the hidden comedic elements, especially at the beginning of the film. Did you notice how many meetings they had from the moment Godzilla's tail surfaced, until they FINALLY scrambled their jets? And how Godzilla had already mutated twice (once off-screen) by then? That was the joke. They had one meeting, concluded the meeting, THEN went to ANOTHER room to start ANOTHER meeting on the same subject! And this happens multiple times! Hilarious, depressing, and accurate at the same time. The entire tone of the film was conveyed as tense, dark, and dreary. However, there was always an underlying tone of sarcasm as it was clearly mocking the Japanese government. Personally, as someone who's really informed on Japanese culture, Godzilla, and their type of cinematography and storytelling in general: I loved it. Because it made sense. To the average Western viewer...not so much. I tried an experiment just to test my theory. I watched the movie with two different groups of Godzilla fans. With one group, I didn't explain anything about the movie, and didn't go out of my way to explain the symbolism, etc. Aside from one or two people in that group..they hated it. And guess what? Those two people had the same amount of knowledge as I. For the second group, I explained what the point was before and during some earlier parts of the film so that they'd know what to look for- Instant hit with the entire group. They laughed at the right parts, and completely appreciated the more symbolic elements once I explain the basis of the film. Once I did the same for the first group as well, we watched the film again, and they actually really liked it. In closing, I think that people are being too harsh on the film due to cultural ignorance. It is entirely possible to be completely aware of this, and dislike the film on more educated and reasonable grounds, but to attack the film without even realizing what you're saying, is ridiculous. Some people have tried to counter this by saying: Well a good film should be able to cater to all audiences without the viewer having to do more research on it." Here's the fallacy in that argument: It's an entirely different culture. Would you tell that to American film-makers who have the same issue of their critically-acclaimed films in the west being panned in Japan due to cultural differences? I doubt it, because that's ridiculous. On top of that, the poor presentation of the dub doesn't help. So then, the western viewer would have to watch the subbed version, further alienating them, from the film as well. If they didn't get it before, they certainly won't get it now. Of course every Japanese film doesn't suffer that to this degree, but there will always be a loss of translation to western audiences when it comes to Japanese work. Just look at the Dragon Ball franchise, where Goku has two completely different personalities between his western and Japanese portrayals, and now the Dragon Ball Super is accurately presenting his Japanese character in the west, people pretty much hate Goku now, saying that "that's not like Goku at all!" Well...it is. It always was. You're just used to the Americanized version of Goku. As it is with Godzilla.
