Hands down the Greatest. I'm 61yrs old, I've seen Clapton, Page, Hendrix, Santana, Winter, Thorogood, Blackmore, McLaughlin,Albert & Alvin Lee, Moore and a ton of others live during my days, none even comes close. Rory needs no R&R HoF, his Hall of Fame is in our hearts and always will be. I dont wet easily, but everytime I listen to Rory I could fucking cry.
One of the really great Rory songs - ho plys like nobody else. Have i told that Bonamassa went to RG Home and asked the people there if he can play one time on his guitar He is a great fan
I saw Rory playing at a festival back in the early 90's. He was obviously very drunk and kept disappearing off stage leaving his bass player and drummer to carry on alone. The set was cut short. It was very sad to see this great virtuoso's demise through alcohol. he died shortly after that. I was always sad that I never got to see him play like in this video.
this one's a bit loose, makin' the lyrics up as he goes, but always exciting....but get Gerry's bass! what a man, always right there driving the sound along.Imagine what Jimi Hendrix would have been with a rhythm section like that behind him........
+kildare97 Gerry was a real powerhouse his contribution can't be underestimated, just like Rory off the mainstream radar, fantastic bass player wouldn't have been the same without him.
Awesome clip of Rory at his very best. Hard to believe that this was the opening song of his set. Most people don't achieve this level of after 90 minutes on stage. I was lucky enough to have seen him live a couple of times back in the early 80's. I still have the guitar pick I caught at the end of the set. I later met him and he signed my denim jacket and tour book. He was one of the nicest, most genuine rock musicians I've ever met. 4 people obviously have no ears or brain.
I saw him in 1980 at Birmingham. He opened like this and had 2000 people in the palm of his hand in under 10 seconds.Unique means one of a kind and he really was exactly that.
I'm from Portrush N Ireland. Saw Rory twice in Ulster Hall and once down in Cork. One of the very few who would come up to play in N.I. Religion did not matter at a Rory concert, everyone just so into it..! ✌️ ☄️
No one..... never for EVER on this world... Only LORY ....that The Great One should be for " ON The Top " of LORY's MONUMENT ..or Irish National Treasure .
He is beyond amazing! Absolutely hypnotizing with the energy, talent, and rawness of that performance. Just pure great music without the need for glitz and glam to compensate. He is the greatest of all time!
Damn, SO fucking good. Rory was a force of nature. Why he’s not more well known or as highly regarded as the other “usual suspect” big name rock and roll guitarists defies explanation. He was once even considered as a replacement for Mick Taylor in the Stones back in ‘74, but I can see why he wasn’t picked. He was just too wild and high energy for what the Stones were doing. He would have totally stolen Jagger’s thunder onstage and eclipsed all that funky chicken stuff. All I know is that he should have been a household name. I’ve only really learned in depth about him in the last 10 years or so.
@@melonballer8475 At the same time, it’s a goddamn shame that he never got the mass recognition that he deserved. He truly was one of the top 3 greatest guitarists of all time… worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as Hendrix or Beck. I’m not sure why the mainstream never embraced him. Maybe it was just because he was too real, too no frills/no bullshit, too down to earth, and played just for the sheer joy of it, rather than showboating and playing with his ego. I’ve turned on a lot of young’ns to Rory, and they all agree he’s one of the greats.
I watch this most weeks. The tightness of the band, the beauty of the phrasing, the absofuckinglute brilliance of the Man Rory shining through. The energy is awesome. Miss him.....
They broke the mould after they made Rory Gallagher, just a brilliant musician , and when you'd seen him live you just knew you were witnessing something special , Gerry Mcavoy and Ted McKenna also deserve a mention
Too damned straight. As great as Rory was, he was able to be so good because Ted & Gerry held the rhythm for him and they were tighter than a duck's backside.
I was up front, at his feet, at a gig @ the Stardust Ballroom, in Hollywood, Ca. I got to touch the Strat during “Shadow Play”, & bought him a Jameson’s & water afterwards. (It came back with coca-cola). The very first thing he said, and he spoke first, as there I had been, right in front of him was: “ How did it sound? Was it okay?” I replied: “Okay? You blew the roof off the dump.” He thanked me, then ordered the next round, keeping the coke back, as well.Keep in mind, this is around 1983, “Jinx” was the new album, Gary Myrick opened. He spent about a half hour with me as the place emptied, finally sitting at the bar, until Tom O’Driscoll came for him. An incredible ending to an incredible show! Just the most humble, normal guy I’ve met. No “Rock Star bullshit, just a guy who happened to play guitar. Only other one who came close was Alvin Lee, but only if he knew you weren’t a fan-boy. On the night I met Alvin, I was in the opening band, so the ice was broken. Rory was leery of reporters also, as a couple came up during my time with him. “Later”, was his reply to both reporters. One last observation : He was also the only artist who got better with each new album... He never sat on his laurels, or phoned it in. He improved & impressed me every single time out. A true legend....
Total star but the no-effects thing is a myth. He used a Rangemaster as early as Taste. I had the honour to interview him in 1981 and look at his stage rig. Boss EQ booster, Boss OD1 , MXR Dynacomp and Boss flanger in the line.
@@andrewdavidwhyte I think Rory's brother, Donal, owns it. He loans it on special occasions to Johnny Marr, also to Bernie Marsden and to Joe Bonamassa.
Yes, he was unique! His songs, his guitar playing! Music scene today is either rap or playback. No one is mastering an instrument, no one is writing lyrics concerning your life, no one is musically touching you!
I think what made him unique was that he had the whole package. He was not only extremely talented and gifted, but he was also a high energy wild man who played with a much higher level of passion than so many other “virtuoso” guitarists. You can really tell that he genuinely loved rock and roll. For him it was never about ego or showing off. He lived for the stage, and all that natural talent just came exploding out of him without an ounce of pretension. Musicians like that are extremely rare.
Rated 57 who the hell rated Rory that . !! He is top you better believe it . Without him Queen wouldnt have their sound. Great performer . Name a better one ??? He sang and played great and he was irish 😊😊😊
It's sad that I discovered Rory about one year ago. He's one of the greatest guitarist I've ever seen. He's the definition of pure energy. ⚡ It's even sadder that I will never see Rory live and I couldn't see him because I'm 28... 😔 Long live Rory! Wherever you are. 😇
Remix the only one If you love the G Man try Davy Knowles. Davy plays with Gerry McAvoy in Band of Friends celebration of Rory Gallagher. Davy is only 30 and what a axe man! Davy is a Rory freak, you’ll enjoy him. He’s equally great with his own band. I saw Rory twice. He was just something special. Truth is the quiet polite man from Cork was just too good for this world. He didn’t need bribe St. Peter at Heaven’s Gate.
Same bro , discovered him 5 years ago now and have the exact same feelings towards missing out. There will never be another Rory no matter how technical or fluid.
Awesome, just awesome. A force of musical nature, how the hell is that these wonderful people die so young..? The sheer demoniacal energy of the man, unbelievable; and you know that he woould put in the same effort in front to ten people in a pub..! God bless you Rory, wherever you are.
My next door neighbour and her daughter came round the other night, wailing about how amazing Queen are/were. And how there was no guitarist could come near brian may. Really, I said, because the teenage brian may got to meet rory gallagher after a concert once and asked him how on earth he managed to get such a great sound. Gallagher sat him down and gave him a masterclass in style & technique on which, he says in his autobigography, he based his entire career.
@@reniisgod well that would be very difficult to tell wouldn’t it, based on the fact that I can’t see you. You’re obviously not just funny but rather dim also
The Guinness fueled Irish genius called Rory Gallagher. A complete one-off. Will there ever be another who can play with this genius and passion? I doubt it.
no there won't! they just don't make them like this anymore, absolutely astonishing that he never became what they might call today "a rock god" however I think that was a good thing because it preserved his integrity, all the really famous players know who he is and among his peers he is very highly respected and as for those who haven't heard him because they're only into contemporary mainstream ha-ha there missing out and probably wouldn't get it given that genuine heartfelt talent is nigh on extinct in today's manufactured music industry. I don't even look in the contemporary charts, as far as I can see they aren't real musicians. so guys and girls we are the lucky ones.
+PenneyEd - Hey Man, after 3 years ago I drew an artwork , looks like your words Illustration :) see it: facebook.com/rorygallagherart/photos/a.936677243021042.1073741838.934518053236961/1024042360951196/?type=3&theater
Every so-called musician in the top forty today should watch this and learn how it should be done , no effects no backing tracks and playing their instruments !!!
what a performance, I think this was actually a set opener, it really does have everything, the energy is abundant and the solos especially the first I honestly believe they're the best i've heard by anyone ever, Rory was finger tapping back then so EVH didn't invent it, his use of pinched harmonics is amazing 10 out of 10!
When Murphy ceam to the Perly gates he heard guitar playing he asked St Peter is that Rory Gallagher playing the guitar ST Peter said no thats God he some times thinks hes Rory, Margo
This is just WAAAY cool.No lights no smoke just a beat up old Strat a Levi jacket a crazy Irishman and 10 tons of passion.Phew I need a lie down. The Greatest.
Now I'm stunned (unfortunately only today, though your comment is years ago) you're calling yourself Metal Guru. Is it possible you are like me a Rory Gallagher as well as a Marc Bolan fan?
RIP Rory - named my son after him. saw him at Toad's Place in New Haven in '70s, and he was incendiary and brilliant, playing this same beat-up Strat; met and interviewed him after ... probably had 12 of his albums, but "Photo Finish" was the best and this leadoff track smokes
'What's Going On'? I pull up this Rory performance, and I'm sure THIS is his best live performance ever..So I pull up 'Walk On Hot Coals', and I'm sure that's his best live performance...Then I pull up 'Read Me' and then 'A Million Miles Away', and I know those are REALLY his best live stuff ever...WTF!!...Well all I can say is there's no Bullshit 'Eddie Van Halen School of Guitar Playing' going on here...lol...frankm62yroldwhitekid
This man was a beast of a player I've seen people copy Jimi and SRV and get there sound but I've never heard anyone nail Rorys sound or playing ability an absolute one off rip Rory
Really! What can you say? He has got to be one of the top 5 of all time. Hendrix, Clapton, Blackmore, Page, EVH, are all guitar Gods but watching these clips of Rory really pisses me of that he isn't even mentioned today. Man I wish I could have seen him live. RIP
I saw Rory, Gerry and Ted play in 1980 and it was awesome, and I have seen Gerry and Ted play in the Band of Friends twice now and what a show they produce.
I got to meet him backstage once. I kept asking him to repeat himself because of my inability to understand his brough. His response was " Yeah that last band was pretty loud huh?" Had a good laugh! I think about it all the time.
For me it's a great pleasure, when Americans name the 3, 5 or 10 best guitar players of all time and nearly none of them knows or mentions Rory. Poor America!
This is one of my favourite songs of all time and this live recording brings back amazing memories of me hearing it live at the Glasgow Aplollo in the early 80's. Even my two teenage kids love it - he's a timeless genius !!!
Gotta feel sorry for the backing band, he's going steadily faster the whole way through until he gets to the last couple of mins when he takes off altogether - they were chasing after him the all the way.
Ajouter un commentaire public... Best guitarist ever. Awesome singer. Incredibly underrated songwriter. I love his simplicity: jeans, a shirt and that's about it...oh yeah, socks and shoes too. I've never read anything bad about him. I don't think he was a perfect human being (that doesn't exist), but I bet he was close to that. A gentleman as in gentle man. And his band is awsome: his bassist is one of the best I've ever seen/heard.
