Yeah, that was my mistake. Going through all my gameplay footage, this was the only long section without lots of sound effects/game sounds and I've been scrambling to get this video together for the last few days. I'm not sure why the SMTIV:A Large Map theme is playing here though, I don't remember changing the in-game music from the default settings. :/

I thought I explained it pretty well in that first reply but if you'd like a play-by-play: I wrote the script for this review and in it I left a note to play some unedited gameplay footage showing the music that isn't stuck with the dynamic mixing & PS2 instrument samples. I then began editing the video, got to that point, went through the ~6 hours of varied gameplay footage I'd captured, and found the clip I used in the video which was just the music with no game sounds/sound effects/etc (E.G. the perfect clip for this exact spot in the video). I had no reason to believe it was anything other than a Nocturne track because I was sure that I did not change the OST from the default option (and I've since checked & my soundtrack setting is set to default so I either briefly experimented with it at some point & don't remember or it's a bug).

Great review yet again! I've watched reviews of this game and I think you are the only one who was able to explain about technicality of the low bitrate recording other reviewers just brushed off as low quality/ bad audio. And this is why you are my favorite reviewer, good job!

Alot of people go the inflammatory route as it gives them more views and views = revenue which is the unfortunate truth of the matter. It was actually refreshing to see someone refer to the music issue in a level headed matter with actual research behind it.

Tá numa promoção na Steam o jogo, custando 162 reais, e lá é possível parcelar, se tu tiver cartão de crédito. Também, tu pode emular. Não é preciso um computador muito robusto pra emular PS2, e tb é fácil de configurar.

@@douglasnascimento9196 É verdade, mano, há muitos labirintos irritantes nesse jogo, que ficam ainda piores por causa do altíssimo encounter rate que há nesse jogo, e tb porque mesmo no normal, quase sempre tu não consegue fugir desses encontros e tem que gastar mana, que é escassa até o meio do jogo, mais ou menos... é preciso paciência. Bom, ainda assim eu recomendo muito, se tiver inseguro a respeito do dinheiro, a emulação sempre é uma saída. Mas entendo, tá difícil a situação financeira do país. Videogame é só passa-tempo e realmente fica complicado gastar tanto com mero entretenimento quando há coisas mais importantes...

2:56 I've been waiting for this! Jokes aside, I like that idea of difficulty switching just to remove the tedious process of grinding then switch back. Kinda reminds me of P4G where you can choose the difficulty setting anytime during the playthrough.

Yeah, I think they made the right move adding in Merciless mode AND the ability to switch difficulty at any time because I don't think there is really an easier difficulty than normal that could be balanced in a way that would still give you the challenge you want from Nocturne. Merciless just became the grind mode for me, rather than easy mode.

The Raidou games are actually Devil Summoner 3 and 4. But yeah, they should all four. But the first one could be tricky as it is a Saturn game.

The music at the end isn't from Nocturne, it is from SMT 4 Apocalypse and it is the large map theme. It's aviable in nocturne HD but only if you buy the dlc

My explanation was very abridged, you could technically say they aren't wrong to blame it on compression. Lowering the sample rate is a technique you can use when doing sound compression but it's much more complicated in SMT 3 because it's not a case of 'they used the older compressed tracks instead of using the HQ album tracks'. Basically where the music sounds compressed is where PS2 instrument samples were used & HQ versions of those just don't exist.

Yeap, it's actually pretty cool what they did with it. When you choose the 2 demons you want to fuse it automatically fills the skill slots at random (like the OG) then you can decide to just go ahead with the summon, set the skills manually, or press 1 button to get another random selection. So you can get the original experience of random skills but instead of constantly going in and out of the fusion confirmation menu you can just press 1 button to re-randomize the skills. :)

This is a masterpiece of the PS2 and the updated features in the Remaster are great. The selectable skills in fusion alone will cut at least an hour or more out of your play time for selecting skills, and having those better skills will further let you get through the game faster. Pretty amazing that I clicked on this video when I'm about to fight The Harlot just like the intro!

SMTIII is still a masterpiece, although I am a bit sad that the Original SMTIII is only for Steam. Going through Chronicles since I’ve already beaten 110% the Manics version. Excited to finally play as Raidou in Nocturne! Yes the soundtrack is top notch and one of a kind. That said I’m skipping the voice acting (really grateful you can turn it off) and I’m never going to download “merciful mode”. I think it diss misses the whole point of the game.

I used Merciful mode for grinding and turned it off for boss fights and when I felt I was at the same level as enemy encounters. It was still fun and challenging.

I did the First Kalpa without a guide but I caved on the Second Kalpa & had to look up a walkthrough. It feels like it's been an eternity since dungeons were this intricate.

2:35 From my what I’ve seen and heard about the game, there are occasional bits of slowdown, seen through the clip you display here and the infamous single-digit frame rate Matador. I am curious to know how much slowdown you’ve experienced, as- though I understand that the PS4/PS5 version doesn’t have this issue- I do not have any consoles besides the switch. I have to agree with some of the other comments and say that's it's nice you actually did some research on why the remaster is the way it is. It's also nice to know that you don't seem to be in the 30 FPS hating bandwagon with most reviewers.

Yeah, I don't see the point complaining about 30fps when it's a turn-based JRPG that has already been confirmed to have it's logic tied to framerate (meaning that increasing the framerate also increases the game speed) requiring a complete redo to fix. It's the same reason games like Final Fantasy X and Okami are still locked to 30fps, even on PC. Game plays fine at 30fps, no issues with the experience at all. :)

Best review I've seen of this game. Too many people/reviewers complaining that it didnt add enough to be considered a good remaster. It added plenty. Just raidou and the ability to choose skills during fusion would have been enough for me. But they also added voice acting, updated quality in the visuals and most of the music, updated localization, etc. Its easily a good remaster in my eyes and imo the folks complaining that its "disappointing" are expecting far too much from a remaster. Possibly they expected a complete remake, idk.

I agree. This is the best review I've seen. It sounds like it actually comes from a MegaTen fan and not just dudes trying to get views for a popular game. And I knew the "compressed" music had to be related to a PS2 issue becuase this is the fourth version of this game and they didn't "solve" the problem. Not any of the other reviews mention the fact that you don't get randomized skills in fusion like in you did in the original.

I mean I kinda understand, retail us is $50 and you have to pay $9 for dante. Most remakes/remasters usually add way more content when they are asking for a $50-$60 price tag. Usually for this type of remaster the game go from anywhere to $40-$20, so it's kinda a slap in the face. Especially since the digital psn store version is $20 at most if I remember correctly, same for the PC version. So these minor improvements really justify an extra $30 price increase

@@reikurokaze3988 the voice acting alone would be considered a major improvement. Not minor. The graphics upgrade might be considered minor to some because the stylized look of the game is hard to improve with a move to HD. The extra QoL options might be considered minor on their own, but as a complete package its somewhere between moderate to impressive. Are there examples of remasters that added more and charged less? Sure. But holding every game to the standard of the best, and lamenting the disappointment when it falls short is foolish and childish. Not every remaster is gonna be everyone's idea of best, but this one is far from the worst. Is the price expensive? Yes. But it's a very high quality game unavailable on any modern platform which would likely be completely passed up for "not being profitable" due to its niche appeal if they didnt charge enough. I'd rather have a 60$ nocturne HD than no nocturne HD. And again, the quality of the remaster isnt bad at all. It's fair to good. And a fair to good remaster of a VERY good, hard to find game is a blessing that doesnt deserve all the complaining.

Actually there are 3 version Regular one featuring no one Chronicles featuring Raidou Kuzunoha Maniax featuring Dante So with the DLC'S is actually like having 3 versions of the game at least for the PC version I don't know how it is on the PS4 and Switch side yet.

Pretty good review, you seem to always mention the stuff I care about the most about each game lol. Though, I'm still a bit salty that you never got to make the video about the demen... I mean, the "Arbiters of Fate" from FFVII Remake. I've just replay the game, one year later... and they still suck.

I was going to replay FF7R and do a kind of re-review which would focus on things like Fate Ghosts but then they announced Intergrade so I've held off for that. It's not too far off now, and I'm weirdly very interested in seeing the Yuffie DLC so there'll probably be a couple of videos coming in June for FF7R (I don't expect my opinion of the game minus the Yuffie DLC to change much.)

Wait, how does this game have a review embargo for story content? It's a remake of a game That's over a decade old. That's like if Disney tried to keep people from publicly discussing the plot twist from The Empire Strikes Back via legal means and contracts. What's the point? Like, if it was specifically for DLC story content that wasn't available for the original release, then that would make sense, but this? I dunno, it's really weird. Don't get me wrong, I recognize that this game is nowhere near Star Wars level of mainstream knowledge, but anyone who wants to know the endings to this game has had over a decade to look it up online already. I can't imagine it hurting anything or anyone unless they were going in blind and the video they watched about the game didn't let then know beforehand that there would be spoilers.

Atlus are always hypervigilant with spoilers, I can't remember the last time I got an Atlus review embargo that didn't have a hard cut-off point for the story lol. They didn't have the kind of audience back when SMT 3 was new that they have now so they're probably expecting a large number of people to be playing this for the first time but I'd certainly prefer the embargo rules just ensured reviewers have to give clear spoiler warnings rather than restricting the story specifics past a certain point.

@@JRPGGaming Well, I get the thing about spoilers, butI still don't get why they're bothering to worry about them with a remaster of such an old game? I'd be willing to bet that if I search for "SMT Nocturne all endings" I'd find a bunch of videos featuring exactly that. Or that I could go onto Gamefaqs right now and look up a step by step guide for all possible endings. I get why they're so paranoid about spoilers, but it makes no sense to me in this particular situation. It's not like this is a new game like Persona 5 was or a perpetual dweller of developer hell like SMTV seems to be, it's a game that's been out for YEARS, so I just find this embargo to be mind boggling. At no point in time is anyone with internet access more than 20 seconds away from this information, so what's the point in creating this plot embargo, and what are it's limits? Would ai be able to talk about the original game's endings, or is talking about the original versions plot forbidden too? It's just a really baffling choice that they've bothered getting this embargo created in the first place, because they probably had to pay their legal team to draw up the paper work to stop people from doing something that is completely redundant.

If there were any major performance issues, I would have mentioned them, but there aren't any. The JP version was fixed ages ago and all those fixes are baked into the global version. :)

the deluxe edition on the switch is available now,. while the standard is not loll,.. it should release later today (5-24),. i never seen a deluxe version release first,. edit: didn't realize the deluxe got 4 days early access

The only smt games that are actually hard on normal are strange journey and soul hackers, as long as you use buffs and debuffs smt games are a fair and sometimes easy challenge

their attacks are the same, the dialogs and skill animations are different. Though i guess that Raidou is more canon than Dante ?

Dialogue is different, and back in the day Dante was worse than Raidou but they've been given skill parity in the HD Remaster. There isn't much different between the 2 versions but if you are going to do a second run for a different ending anyway, it's something else that can add variety.

And the Raidou Chtonicle version is actually newer than the Dante Maniax version, which we never originally got anyway.

I got how do I access the Merciless difficulty dlc cuz I suck at RPGs but I like playing them, Atlus should have known to add the difficulty in the disc cuz thats stupid all Persona games have an easy difficulty.

I'll wait for the discount. The might have improved the game in few areas, but at it's core it's a remaster of a game that at this point is over a decade old. It's honestly not worth $50 to me. 30 Bucks is the absolute maximum i would be willing to spend on this and even then i'll probably wait a bit more just to see if it's going to be discounted even further.

You can quick save anywhere, it's a suspend-state feature so it creates a save and exits the game, allowing you to turn the console off or play other games and come back later to resume where you left off.

@@Agumon2509 Yes if die u start at terminal, its a save mainly for ,,mobile consoles'', u can save game in any moment, then continue game but save is deleted (u cant quick save / quick load spam like casual). Battery low on Switch ? Suspend save and continue game when battery will be charged.

I don't get what you mean by that, whenever I use the PCSX2 version of Nocturne I would encounter texture glitches and things overall looked very wonky where I can see through certain elements and things would clip when I artificially raised the resolution.

@@JRPGGaming You may have some low-res texture here and there, but the original version is overall more consistent and charming thanks to the minimalistic graphics style. In pcsx2 you have also infinite more option to tweak the graphics to your liking. For example, by using any shaders you like, anti-alias methods, different anisotropic filtering, etc. Also it has no fps drops during battles. You can completely remap the controls to watever device you like (if you have a PC, you can realize how important this flexibility is, in particular for ported console games). You can use different aspect ratios and graphics resolutions for whatever screen you have. You have savestates: you can instantly save and restore the game when and where you want. Furthermore the game is complete, you dont need any additional paid DLCs and there are already different hacks/mods for more advanced gameplay if you are inclined to use them. And, finally the best part: if you already own it, you don't need to pay again for a game you already own and already can experience better. By the way, I am using the latest pcsx2 (1.7).
