Every time I think I seen everything about Elvis something new comes my way. They picked some very good Elvis songs, but shows you why Elvis is the only king. I don’t know if any other artist has this appeal.

This tells you the incredible scope and broad influence Elvis had on, well, everyone!!! They brought out a ton of 60s stars to do a tribute to what was all one man from basically 1954-62, minus 2 years in the Army. By '65 he'd become fully entrenched in the movies and movie soundtrack albums, and his real music had been pushed aside by '62 and he wouldn't return to real music until 1968. He was absolutely amazing.

Glen Campbell did a fantastic job on surrender.
@joe6096
@joe6096 Год назад
Glen was still relatively obscure at the time. He'd been a part of the Beach Boys briefly around this time when Brian went on hiatus and was primarily a session/studio guitarist. He wouldn't have his own break out career with his own hits until the 70s, so it's just interesting to see him here and wondering what people thought of him at the time. Like, "who is this Glen Campbell guy?"

There's no comparison on how good Elvis' was in singing, performing and the way he moved with these 60s singers. I'm pretty sure same thing will happen on the '68 Comeback Special 50th anniversary tribute on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2019 with today's singers. Elvis was the best, bar none. It would have been better if the network just show the original 68 Comeback Special. There will never be anyone who will be as good as Elvis.

These 60s singers were better than the junk that was put together for that 50th anniversary special. That was just awful. These 60s stars weren't on Elvis' level either but at least most of them could sing and perform. That crap from a couple years ago was just a mistake. I cringed.

Elvis had only one number one song During the 6 years of Beatlemania.
@joe6096
@joe6096 Год назад
@@jeffreykaufmann2867 Much of that had to do with the fact that Elvis was entrenched in making bad movies and nothing but the soundtracks to those movies. The Beatles were making historic music and pushing the envelope every album they made. But Elvis was not helping himself. Would he have been able to keep up with them if he'd have not been making so many God--awful movies and not focusing on making real rock n roll albums? Maybe not, but he could have at least been more in touch with the world and the direction rock was going.

What a Wonderful and deep (less than obvious /song choices) tribute to Elvis- a decade into his career, with Sonny & Cher and Glen Campbell to boot! This ABC network showcase acts as an early anticipation of his “comeback” 3 years later on NBC. Producer Steve Binder is the thread between “Shindig” & the acclaimed “Elvis” special of 1968!
@joe6096
@joe6096 Год назад
Binder had his finger on the pulse of Elvis more than anyone. He could have and SHOULD have become his manager. It was Binder who brought it to Elvis' and Colonel Parker's attention in 1969 that Germany and Japan had both offered Elvis a million dollars each to do ONE live show in their countries, one at the Berlin Olympia Football Stadium which can hold over 100,000 and would have sold out in minutes.

@@michaelgluth5173 Parker had a say in every song chosen. The more money he could make helped with each selection. Elvis probably didn't care one bit about this show. Bob, you know Lorene Yarnell? Wow! Ever since I "discovered" this show, Shindig, I always felt those Shindig dancers were the absolute BEST hands down. I never really liked the go-go dancers on a lot of those 60's shows, but there really was something unique and different about the ladies who danced on this show and the choreography as well. How is Ms. Yarnell doing these days? I remember The Shields and Yarnell duo from the 70s when I was a kid. It took me a bit to make the connection. The next time you talk to Ms. Yarnell, please tell her she has a big fan here!

To me, Glen Campbell already had something going as vocalist on this show, that no one wanted to admit at the time (never mind his superior musicianship on the guitar). He was a notch above many vocalists on the show. He also got some of the biggest screams on the show by the girls lol. Gotta admit Ray Petersen really immensely nailed the end of It's Now or Never.

I wonder if the Producers of Shindig needed to get the Colonel's permission to do this tribute show to Elvis (anything Elvis-related usually had to go through his Manager, Parker). Also wonder if both Elvis and the Colonel got the idea, along with Steve Binder, to do the 1968 Elvis comeback Special after seeing this. Some of the segments, with how the lighting is set up (Glen Campbell singing "Trouble") are reminiscent of how the 1968 Special was set up (though the Shindig Special came first, in 1965).

Surprising there was enough interest in 65 to do a show of Elvis songs. In 65 Elvis hadn't had a hit in 2 years and was rarely on the radio during the time of Beatlemania. Blue Christmas was just about the only Elvis I remember hearing on Memphis radio in the mid 60s.

What made Shindig different from just about all the other 60s shows, and this is only personal opinion, is that its creator, Jack Good was an honest-to-goodness fan of Rock 'N' Roll. Jack was from the U.K. and his appreciation of the history of Rock and R&B was probably more extensive than anyone's except maybe Dick Clark. Jack Good made it a point to spotlight many of the giants of Rock and I believe I read that he lobbied very hard to get Elvis himself to appear on Shindig. What may have prevented that was either Elvis's busy schedule or the machinations of Col. Parker. At any rate, just as Jack did with Ray Charles and many other giants of Rock and R&B, he devoted an episode to one of his all-time favorites, Elvis.

@@Tomovox_PAMS_Radio_JIngles Shindig was a great show as was Where the Action Is. "Col." Parker's plan to make Elvis a movie star, convincing him to sing all those horrible Hollywood songs definitely changed American music. With Elvis off the charts for most of the 60's, the British Invasion set the tone for years.

52:48 - It's crazy to think when he read that telegram, the Beatles had barely been famous in America for maybe a year and a half. Depending on when this first aired, their current album was either Help, Beatles '65, or Rubber Soul. Elvis was certainly feeling some pressure by this point, as his films were smash hits at the box office but complete disasters by anyone who had any real good taste in music or movies. The Beatles meanwhile were making ever more interesting music - and they were doing it themselves. They were also in the middle of touring the entire world to sold out shows at every corner of the planet while Elvis was reclusive to either home at Graceland or his Beverly Hills house.
