Just to be clear lol I’m VERY new to SHINee…like I’ve only heard a couple of songs from them and NONE were hip hop so that’s why It was shocking to me lol I’m sure those that have been fans know this is nothing new as some have already mentioned but I literally don’t know much about this group other than what I’ve seen. They’ve been together for a long time there much music I haven’t heard. They killed this though as always! 👏🏽
SHINee is a contemporary group so they always produce different type of music/Genre every comeback and they always ate!! I really enjoyed this reaction i hope you can react to their music more!!
It's ok Caitlin! it's understandable since you haven't listened to their discography. This is experimental but not sooo new to them, they started as an R&B and hiphop group, their title is "contemporary band" so they always try different things. You should listen to Get down, Hold You, Love should go on, Love still goes on, Alive, Lock you down, Ready or not. So you notice how versatile they are in terms of genres :) Thank you for your cool reaction as always! I love your ateez reactions btw
to be fair I made a playlist with all their songs (group and solo) and it's 400 songs long and would take around 24 hours to listen too, SHINee has a large discography
SHINee ARE the *original* experimental SM group. Them and f(x) for girl groups before Red Velvet came along. Their first albums are a mix and match of genres, I mean, Sherlock was THE FIRST EVER hybrid song in K-pop. There's definitely been some hip-hop and loud tracks in their first albums, and they didn't develop what many new K-pop fans believe is "their sound" until around their album Odd, which also coincides with when K-pop began becoming more and more popular in the West, which is why there's a Misconception (ha, shawols will know) that this is something new for them. I definitely recommend checking some of their first few albums on your own time if you're so inclined.
Yes, Onew is still on hiatus right now and he wasn't able to finish filming the mv with the other members. I'm just glad that he is in the mv cause his parts were definitely a highlight. As others said, this is similar to earlier discography and it also kind of reminds me of 1st gen esp. Seo Taiji and the Boys
They’ve done stuff this loud before but this one definitely more modern! Get Down and Alive are loud and hip hop based from their earlier albums , like 2008 and 2015, but they haven’tdone it recently.
Taemin said on a show that this time they went for a hip hop style just to proved the point that they can do any genre which in my record yes they can 🔥🔥I really like the song to be honest, but I know that it may not be for everyone and that's ok.
Yes, the members did mention there were elements of their solos in the MV - Onew's circle, the colorfulness from Killer, the piano from advice and the running from Chase. Also, SHINee were actually supposed to be a hip hop group since SM (!!!) didn't think they had strong enough vocals...but yeah they ended up being an experimental group - mostly changing up their style with every comeback. They literally when from Replay to RDD to Lucifer to Sherlock to Dream Girl to Everybody...so lol
I loved the song and the entire album. In this album they show an evolved grown up version of their old (older rookie albums) sound and they did it perfectly in my opinion
Shinee has never been afraid of being out there, evident from their early stuff like Lucifer and Ring Ding Dong. They touch so many genres so this isn't so surprising. I hope you listen to the full album, no misses for sure. Love the reaction
Experimental is actually SHINee's middle name lol. SHINee and f(x) were SM's main original experimental groups they're actually sibling groups or were taken to be sibling groups because they're known for the experimental sound. SHINee was actually supposed to be a Hip Hop group and their earlier work has a lot more of that vibe. As a SHINee fan from 2011, this comeback feels SO SHINee to me. It is actually exactly what I expect from them which is to not expect anything at all and just see what they hit me with. The album is great! I enjoy every song and I LOVE quite a few so I would say no skips for me. Thanks for checking out this comeback!!
SHINee is the original experimental group for SM (including f(x))! Their early stuff like Lucifer and Ring Ding Dong is super experimental at the time of their release. The earliest song I could think of that had a similar sound is "Get It", a b-side in 2010. They've definitely done hiphop before!
Every come back of SHINee is different, they always surprise us with this 360 change, it could be, dubstep, then retro, then rock, then hip hop, the only thing in common is their voices and how they manage arrange all music genres with their own twist.
They've done weird hip hop before on some b-sides but really underground songs like get down, trigger, the shinee world doo-bop... never this style for a title track. Please remember shinee has hundreds of songs 😂 so for a handful to have any sound that remotely sounds like hard is kind of a given... deffo a style very outside of the "norm" for shinee (kinda.. i mean their concept is contemporary band so idk). Loved it because it feels like a mash up of different kpop generations to me. The antidrop is a very 4th gen thing, while the repeat of the chorus is extremely 1st gen hip hop. The bridge is very 3rd gen and a lot of the verses are very 2nd gen IMHO.
At first it seems so unusual and experimental, but at the same time the guys like it so much and it suits them very well, which is addictive. I'm glad they're back, and this song is cool
It's definitely more modern and experimental compared to their earlier songs but there's this distinct sound that is so very SHINEE. The album is so good too ❤ as always thank you for the reaction Caitlin 😊
Shinee has definitely done songs this experimental before…their concept as a group is actually contemporary. I think someone mentioned it before but some similar songs to this are Get down and Alive in their older albums. They have done a lot of jazz and dup step songs too. They’ve done so many sounds I hope one day you can react to their discography because its actual gold.
Yes Key has a wide range in his vocals he can go high and switch to lpw at the drop of a hat. You should hear Bound by Key it's a solo song and he switches from very high to low within the same song. He also has done so in some SHINee songs like Don't Stop.
Hard is so good. The album completely wrecked me. By the end of my first time listening through it I was a complete mess. They came, they ate and didn't even leave one molecule. Also, this is SHINee's first time having a Hip Hop title track but they've always done what can be considered "noise music". Ring Ding Dong, Lucifer, Sherlock and Everybody are just a few examples. They never sound the same with every comeback. They always try to reinvent themselves and try something new and show everyone that they can do anything they put their minds to. Even their repackages will sound completely different. So Hard is just another song in a very big discography of SHINee showing everyone that they can do all genres of music. And I love it.
SHINee has basically done a brand new genre for every single comeback. That's why people always say "This doesn't sound like other stuff ive heard them do" bc they try everything. lol.
Shinee woke up and chose to do their original sound. Actually they were formed to be an all hiphop/R&B rap group in the first place but then SM changed their concept to an experimental contemporary group. So i guess old shawols are familiar with this sound since they’ve done loud songs like this before. They keep changing genres every comeback that we’ve forgotten their original root. I really enjoyed your reaction so thank you for appreciating our boys.
I think you're totally right about it connecting to their solo works! I thought of advice too because taemin's hands were covered with some kind of paint in that mv too plus the fact that he's got extensions and is rapping again haha. As others have said shinee's been around a while so they have done a few songs like this especially back in 2009 and 2010, this is just the first time they have done it as a title track! Very excited for your album reaction! 💚
I don't much about music genre. Here are songs that made me go "huh.. What!!?? from Shinee. Noisy music with weird arrangements, but somehow worked. Not gonna lie, took me several listen to appreciate them. They very noisy parts, soft gentle parts, confusing parts and more. With these experiences, I have no issue with Hard. I love it. Shinee prepared me well. Because I hear bits and pieces of these older songs in Hard, upgraded and modernised. Shinee world (Doo Bob) - 1st Album Shout Out - 2nd Album Ready or Not - 2nd Album Dynamite & Hitchhiking - 3rd Album Alive - 4th Album U Need Me - 5th Album Undercover - Story of Light Epilogue I possibly missed a few more esp from their Japanese album. 😅. They've been around 15yrs darn it. Can't possibly remember all of them.
SHINee HipHop Tracks! The SHINee World (Doo-Bop) (2008) Get Out (2009) Get It (2010) Shout Out (2010) And then they have sprinkles of that sound over the years on their R&B tracks with songs like Trigger (2015), Alive (2015), and Don’t Call Me (2021). Basically you have to be a big fan of their deep cuts to know the hip hop based tracks. They were trained to be a hip hop group pre-debut but the sound shifted over time as they pushed the envelope with new styles. Everyone falls in love with SHINee for a certain sound and then they never go back to it ever again for a title track. 😂 But if you listen to the B-sides, the sound that you love will end up there again eventually. I know a lot of OG fans of those 2008-2010 era B-sides are living their best life right now!
As someone who has had Get Down playing on loop since it was released back in the day, this was not a shock for me (just a very pleasant surprise). It has been interesting seeing some of the comments online who think this is a crazy pivot from SHINee - it’s really in their DNA.
They went with this song just to flex lol. In their earlier stuff they’ve done this kind of music and it’s just refreshing to see that they revisited that and still have some songs with their signature sound incorporated in the album too.
I was thinking this the other day… when Shinee does the music shows, 3rd and 4th gen will be stunned that 2nd gen Shinee will take the stage and kill it. Shinee’s back!
like others have commented they've done stuff like this before in their earliest albums and are in general very experimental with their sound. weirdly enough, i'd say the last time they were this experimental was view which is super beloved now but back then there was a lot of "this doesn't sound like shinee AT ALL"
SHINee's debut as SM Exsperimental Group. They dont have debut promotion & Hidden Project but can swap all the award become best debut grup ever. They always have different kind of genre even themself as shinee itseld as genre.
Yep they've done kiiinda simikar music show stage for bside song Up and Down in Lucifer album (2011) but of course as Hard is their newest title track, musically, visually this is more sophisticated and fresh.
They always show a different version of themselves with this unique essence and what I love, they evolve with their music. I love rap and melody and the bridge is divine. There's a lot of symbolism and Taemin said there's a lot of references to him in there but oh my gosh I'm obsessed with the album. I will add that I see that they refer to hate and being trendsetters and strong and I look at how they prepare their
Hip-hop is definitely new for a SHINee title track! As someone who mostly just checks out their title tracks, I haven't heard them do something quite like this for a main promotional track. The experimental nature of the song (especially those amazing piano bits) definitely give it that unique SHINee flair. Excited to see this one performed! They killed the choreo. It's too bad Onew can't join them for now.
The piano actually reminded me of don't call me it's not as present like in this song but there's a small section that felt similar This whole mv and song reminds me of 1st gen sm groups for some reason, especially the choreography in the beginning of the chorus The whole album is 🔥 🔥
Yeah, Onew is still on health leave right now. From the looks of it, he was only able to film a portion of the video before he had to leave to take care of his health.
Yay I finally got to watch your reaction and I loved it! Lots of people probably already said it, but SHINee was meant to be an experimental group since Day 1 which is why most of their title tracks are way different from each other. Even as a long time Shawol, I can't fully predict what they're going to do next and how they're going to SHINee-ify it. SHINee really can do any genre and still make it sound like SHINee.They were originally supposed to debut as a rap/hip hop group, so they aren't unfamiliar with the genre. Some of their early music b sides were actually quite hiphoppy, so I take this comeback as an upgraded version of themselves and their older songs. The album is a whole trip in it of itself. I hope you react to it, because I'd love to see it, but if you don't have time or energy to do that, I hope you enjoy it!!! Thank you for another SHINee reaction!!
I remember the last time you were this shocked about a Shinee title was Lucifer lol. And yes they have done stuff like this before but more in bsides! Loved your reaction as always. You are one of my fave reactors out there and my dream would be for you to react to a full Shinee album one day 🥺 I know you have a lot on your plate and this is not a demand or anything it's just that I really love your reactions ❤️ So I hope you maybe consider reacting to the Hard album if there is ever time in your schedule 🙏 The album is soooo good and you would love the bsides and their vocals.
AHHHHHH!!!! I was looking forward to your reaction and just saw it was posted but I was in PT and now I'm at the gym!! 😭 I guess I'll have to wait til I get home to watch it!!
Caitlin if you get a chance to see the 15 Anniversary trip with SHINEE, there is a live band version of Sherlock that needs to be seen and commented on. Love your reactions as always.😊❤
I have been waiting for your reaction since yesterday, lol! Girl, those boys sorry correction (MEN) didn't disappoint! The album is 🔥🔥! not one single song is bad, but my favourite is like it! all I have to say SHINEE IS BACK PEOPLE 😍. Also, I did watch beyond live, and I most say key, minho and taemin did a bloody amazing job just three of them 👏🏾. Shinee5 here to stay 💚❤️💛💙💖
My immediate thought the first time I heard this was I bet this was originally for 127. It feels like it fits with some of their more recent comebacks and it kind of follows the structure they used for who will sing when. Giving it to SHINee was an interesting move and I love it. Having four members that are all so versatile meant they were able to shake up what was anticipated for this song. SM regularly gives songs written for one group to another when its not used; a ton of EXO's earlier b sides were clearly originally for Super Junior or SHINee, then early NCT songs were clearly written for EXO, etc.; and I honestly love seeing it go the other way.
Hard is a lot more experimental than a lot of their songs but I do still think they have song with similar vibes like "Get Down" from their album Y.O.U, "Get it" from their repack album Hello, ofc "The SHINee World" from their very first album SHINee world also gives similar vibes, so for me it feels like a modernized version of a sound they have used before making it feel a lot more fresh and new
Please do more reaction to Shinee. I really love your reaction. Its makes me happy for the whole day. I dont know how many times i have repeated your video. Please do more!!!
Hii Caitlin! I think this is my first time leaving a comment but I just wanted to say that whenever you have time, check out Minho & Key's song called Get Down off their Year Of Us 2009 album. You don't gotta make a reaction vid about it, but I'm just recommending it because it's one of their older songs that has more hip hop influence that I think could help connect with their latest comeback.
‼️OMG I LOVE YOU CAITLIN I’m SO SORRY I spilled my coffee at work on my iPad and everything got messed up I swear to the universe I didn’t click the thumbs down 😩😭😭😭!!!! I’m going to cry PLEASE don’t block me it was an accident which is what I get for sneaking to watch this at work 🤦🏻♀️ also thank you for this reaction video and love U SHINee! 🩵 ok going to hide in the corner now…..sigh🥺❤️🩷❤️🩷
Onew is VERY ill and not promoting the album, hence not being in the last shot. We ALL wish him well. In some of the scenes, they're inside the piano. Love your reaction video.
