Shinkansen Luggage HACK - No Reservations Needed!

Taking luggage on the shinkansen can be a pain, but if you know this clever hack, you can use a very convenient spot that doesn't require seat reservations! It only works if your case has combined dimensions of less than 160cm, and only applies to shinkansen running south of Tokyo.

Hi just a quick question on the luggage size. I have just 1 standard large suitcase with me. Are they super strict with the size if you exceed an inch or two? I didn't have time to measure my suitcase so Im just basing this o the usual large suitcase which may have some slight differences... Thanks

Hi Andrew! Your video is so informative, but I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction. If someone is traveling from Tokyo to Kyoto with two oversized suitcases (both slightly above 160cm) AND a small carry on suitcase, is this possible? Does the person need to book two reserved seats to be able to travel with all 3 bags (2 oversized and 1 carry on). I hope you will be able to help me as I have been unable to find an answer myself.

I think the larger issue is you're already over the allowed limit of 2 pieces of luggage, excluding smaller items like purses or small bags that you carry on your person. If you absolutely need to take everything, use luggage forwarding.

I forgot to mention that you can't get around this by booking 2 seats - there's actually a rule to stop you doing this!

Hi! My mom and I will be traveling mid November and only carry one suitcase that is exactly 160cm. Can I just reserve seats on shinkansen exactly when I’m going to ride it that day? The reason I want to reserve it is because i want the back seats and make sure I sit with my mother. Does autumn in japan make the station very crowded?

You can reserve on the day, but you run the increasing risk of there being none of these seats available on the train you want. Autumn is busy at the best of times, and I expect this year to be especially so because of reasons. Try to reserve as soon as you can is my advice. A few days before is fine. Hope that helps.

That's one way of looking at it. Culturally, it seen as causing a nuisance once the luggage is enormous. That's one reason why luggage forwarding is recommended so often.

@japanunravelled That's fair reasoning. I'm heading to Japan in just over a week and packing light for winter is going to be a challenge. I've got a 40L backpack and a small hard shell suitcase.. even with only small luggage, the lack of storage options for trains is just anxiety inducing.

Both can easily go on the shelf. I wouldn't be worried with that amount.
