Hello, I am traveling with a hard shell carry on luggage 22inch x 15in x9 in, a soft nylon bag 22x14x9 inches , and a back pack 12.5" x 6.75" x 18" inches. My back pack is considered a purse/personal item? Do you know? Thanks
It’s no fun paying extra fees but if the seats with oversized baggage area are full and you really want to board, you can just bring on your oversized bags and pay ¥1,000 as an oversized bag fee.
@@japanunravelled never tried this and never seen it. On JR’s website, they say that the conductor would designate a place to store the baggage. It makes me wonder if they have enough space to accommodate everyone if the train was full and every passenger on board brought along two 250 cm bags.
Well im about to find out if this is true. The ticket office told me they signed out of oversize baggage areas but I had already reserved my tickets months in advance with Klook and Klook doesn't let you reserve with oversize baggage.
Traveling with a family of four, this has been very helpful but my overthinking brain has me concerned that if we book the end seats to get that extra storage someone may use the space behind the seats before we can. For example, on planes people will use any and everywhere they can, without thinking. I just want to avoid any awkward situations. 😊
Hi - thanks for this! Just a couple questions cause I’m slightly stressed about my group’s luggage situation 😅 I’m travelling with 2 people - each person is bringing 3 checked luggage/suitcases + a carry-on bag each (a lot I know but there’s shopping to do!). We know that we’ll probably have to ship at least 1 suitcase each to our next hotel when travelling from city to city but I’m just wondering if each of us can still bring a backpack / duffel bag onto the shinkansen along with 2 suitcases?
Sure! You could use a Welcome Suica, which you can get from the airports and major stations in Tokyo. If you're coming into Osaka, you can buy an ICOCA card right from the ticket machines. You can also use mobile Suica if you have an iPhone.
Hi! Great video! I have one last question, hope you can help me. I'll travel with one carry-on 110 cm and another medium 143 cm. Do I need a seat with oversized? Or I can put one on the shelf and another in front of my feet?
Hoping to take a 60L camping rucksack on my travels to Japan, would this fit in the overhead shelve or would I need to book the oversized luggage seats? Thanks!
1:58 Hi! Helpful video! I just had a question, do you know how big of a luggage can fit in the special luggage compartments? Thanks again for the Japan tips!😊
I have a jr pass for an upcoming trip and bought the green car pass. Some trains give you the option of “green car with luggage space” AND “green car with luggage compartment”. I have this on the Hikari from Hiroshima. What is the actual difference when selecting seats?
Hii im still confused by how this japan train luggage system. Im going to Japan this late May 2024 and i will be buying/book hokuriku arch pass today. Can i still reserved the seat & luggage at the same day i will be using it? And i will be going to Osaka using Hokuriku arch pass, and there's transit using regular trains, can regular train bring an oversized luggage & how to book it? (Sorry for my bad english)
Yes and yes. Regular trains don't have this system, but it's best to book seats at the ends of cars too because they have the most luggage space. Have fun!
My suitcase is 120cm but quite huge actually, with 20kg capacity. I don't think I can put it on overheard baggage by myself. So do I still need to book it?
Hi, I just measured only A+B+C (66H+30W+43L=139cm) or must I count all the dimensions of the luggage ie multiple A,B,Cs ? In this case, is my luggage oversized ? I'm so confused. Please help advise.
@@japanunravelled I just have 1 piece of luggage, so the measurement would be just to count 1 section of A, B and C ? I don't have to measure all around the bag right ? Its a 26" trolley bag. Thanks!
@@japanunravelled Not quite that big! Still fits under the seat on an airplane so I think that's good then. It's been so long since I've been on the Shinkansen, the new rules spooked me.
Hi there ! our luggage bags are less then 160cm, however they are 47cm wide. Will we be allowed to put them on the luggage rack? Do the rules affect every shinkansen? For example also the shinkansen from tokyo to kanazawa?
Do I have to reserve from hours before or the night before? Or can I make a reservation on the ticket box? I’ve got JRpass for next month and planing to use it immediately after arrival: from Nagoya to Kyoto (morning) and from Kyoto to Osaka (night) What should I do then? 😢
Ticket office, ticket machine, online - all are possible. Try to do it as soon as you can beforehand if you really want to take a particular train, or risk finding there are no spaces available.
@@japanunravelled oh, so it’s okay to do it just before I take the shinkansen as long as there’re spaces available? Then, as you said, I’d take the earliest & latest train possible. Thanks for answering!
@@taracarennaYou can just make reservation on ticketing machine, they allowed you to book seats even minutes before departure. As for seats availability, it should not be a concern as November is not really a peak holiday travelling season for the locals.
