@Des T so true. It's just the show was able to make so many great characters that in the end they were unable to develop all of them. Personally I hated the way the show ended at the shinobi war. It grouped all the baddies and goodies together and it hardly gave any shine or development to anybody
Topsey2000 right!! but i feel team 10 shined a bit during the war(more ino and choji, since already shikamaru had his moments). i feel like tobirama and minato shined to.
Shino was originally a brutal, calm and calculating tactician. Classic example of a character that was introduced as a very formidable force not be messed with to over time progress into a joke character
Shino Neji Lee Temari and Kankuro were shown great terrifying potential in this arc and sasuke retrieval ofc they sadly don't amount to much in shippuden
Remember when we thought Shino was mysterious and a little creepy? Then he became less creepy and just the quiet kid, then he became whatever he is in Boruto.
@@saekisadako2118 ikr? he had his arms broken by sasuke and then shino just exploded them. then he was used as a sacrifice by orochimaru to reanimate Tobirama (or Hashirama idk which) and died. poor guy.
Luke Rosales yeah they could of literally of just shown a shadow of him losing his arms. I mean that was a very common way of showing bloody scenes like that when adapting an manga into an anime.
If your talking about that time that dark chakra took over during that episode of Boruto. He wasn't in his right mind to use that intelligence of his to fight as well.
This really showed how intelligent Shino is. He foresaw a situation where Zaku was forced to use both arms and tricked him to damage himself to the point where he can’t battle. He literally didn’t have to do anything else to win. Just quick careful planning and patience. A true ninja
What I love about OG Naruto is that even during these exams, people-even the supporting characters- are not in the least bit afraid of crippling their opponents for life to win. It made the Naruto universe seem very ruthless, competitive and dangerous. It truly was an ominous and mysterious setting, and that's what made it great.
as the series progressed, it lost this hard edge. Everyone became chummy, even the worst bad guys had redeeming qualities and maybe if the situation was different we could just be friends and... ugh. i liked it better when Zabuza was a rogue killer and that was terrifying.
@@jamham69 Zabuza was raised in times where kids go to war and only the strongest survive,Boruto kids dont have to face wars and that much problems so they are generally more chill and goofy But i agree,OG Naruto series are much better than Shippuden for me for that same reason
@@casualcookin3893 absolutely, the direction makes sense in-universe. I think the direction is less fun though, and that having the story end up where it is was the result of compounding mistakes.
Shino had so much potential to be developed as a character. He had cool moves, a mysterious persona and zero clownery. Sad that he got reduced to wearing a toaster on his eyes. One of my favourite underrated characters! Edit: And I'm still mad we didn't get to see the Kankuro vs Shino fight... he had the potential to become Chunin along with Shikamaru. Dang.
@@saltybaguettes2555 I meant...if they'd fought in the arena, Shino would have had a chance to become Chunin. I do remember that they fought but an arena fight would have been more exciting
@@Seasonal-Shadow_4674 I think that instead of sands siblings, kishimoto could've sent hinata, ino and tenten in backup for kiba, shikamaru and lee. (imagine for example hinata using byakugan and gentle fist to cut sakon's chakra points to cut off ukon, or Ino with mind transfer jutsu against tayuya) it could be cooler and less wasted potential for konoha rookies
I like how Zaku's arms were targetted by every enemy he faces Sakura: Stabs Zaku's arm Sasuke: Almost breaks Zaku's arms Shino: Put bugs on Zaku's arms
In all the groups, they always had the same classification for each team. Teacher - Kakashi. Guy. Asuma. Kurenai. Could deal a lot of damage and is usually the clown or the butt of jokes - Naruto. Lee. Choji. Kiba. 2nd in damage output but has the brains in the group - Sasuke. Neji. Shikamaru. Shino. Medic or the "X-Factor" - Sakura. Tenten. Ino. Hinata.
@@lemuellala2 @lemuellala2 to add to that Jiraiya Obito and Kankuro in first group. Orichimaru Kakashi and Gaara in second group. Tsunade Rin and Temari in third group. Also group 2 is usually edgier, more introverted and sometimes considered a "prodigy"
Burnkastel and even if they got caught, they usually just have a gun and just kill the enemy. Ninja wasnt a job, it was just “if you have time to do it, then do it” type thing. They were just farmers or villagers.
Tenten really had no potential. Everything she did - could be done by any other ninja. And while the same could be said for Rock Lee, he at least was compensated with a wild personality, while Tenten had none and developed none. Shino, on the other hand... Yeah, a lot of wasted potential on him. Keeping his cool, letting the opponent make mistakes. Really interesting character.
This guy is the definition of keeping cool while in battle, it's unfortunate that he's used as a comic relief only even though his appearance speaks otherwise Like the whole Team 8 were lacking screen time
I always liked Shino such an amazing character with potential I'll always keep the phrase "Never underestimate your opponent no matter how little the bug" in my head
If I remember correctly... didn't Shino and the other members of Team 8 also trap and straight up _kill_ some of their competitors during the Forest Of Death portion of the exam? Like- they did not have to do that. That was not a requirement. The three of them just decided together 'Look, I know we have our scrolls, so we're _technically_ good to go- but what if we just... reduced the chances of later competition?' Shino's busy monologuing about how 'These giant leeches will drain you completely dry in less than 5 minutes,' while Hinata and Kiba watch him like they have absolutely no problem with this. Team 8 was pretty brutal in the og series, shame that Kishimoto didn't keep that energy for them later on.
not sure if shino meant that literally as in actually killing them or if he just said that to be cool and they were just left with dengerously low blood levels unable to move until pulled out by staff
They even lock the barely conscious team and the leeches in a cage trap to ensure they finish the job. And in the anime, the other team is from the Rain; but in the original manga they're from the Leaf. So team 8 murdered fellow Leaf ninja at age 12
When I first watched this I found myself hardcore rooting for Shino as I already established that I had a fascination for the Characters on Kurenai’s Team and then once they showed Zaku’s flashback It hit me that now I loved Zaku because I knew something about him It flipped the script and suddenly Shino became the Villain and suddenly Zaku was the one I was rooting for and then within a moments notice the character that I began to have a lot of empathy for lost the battle and I stood there silently thinking…I didn’t really get much out of It but It did make me think twice before I Judged someone automatically based on the limited Information I knew about them I know this all sounds cheesy as Swiss Cheese but I think It’s pretty amazing how Naruto Is able to get you to relate to even the most obscure characters
Tbh, Zaku and Dosu weren’t obscure characters, during the chunin exams arc it seemed both of them would get lots of development, they were focal parts of the plot. Then the both of them got abruptly killed, almost offscreen even, it was very disappointing, they were definitely interesting characters.
Yea just think about Anko. She shows up suddenly with lots of potential and hints about how dark and twisted life as a ninja can be. There were even hints of an attraction between Anko and Naruto. Sadly the focus returned to the flat chested flop called Sakura.
This fight is the one and only time where the dub outdid the sub. Shino's english line "while an ace in the hole is good...two aces is better" is so freaking badass.
The trump card line makes more sense for this scene. Having an ace in the hole means playing a stud poker game with the Ace facing down. If Shino has two aces Zaku would know he has at least one because all the cards but one are face up. So his ace in the hole doesn't mean anything and he would be aware of that. On the other hand, if he has a trump card (the most powerful suit) in his hand he's been saving until the end, he would be fooled into thinking he can win with it. Shino's trump card is the unbeatable one (highest possible card from that suit), so he knows his victory is guaranteed: "what a true trump card is".
2:34 Say what you will about English Dubs, but I feel like Shino from that dub had the perfect line for that scene. "You see, while having an ace in the hole is good... having two aces is better."
Fun fact: Shino is the second smartest in the series, being only behind Shikamaru, and Tying with Sakura, who was proven to be very smart, so that's another to the list of his wasted potential, along with the fact that he had earth nature chackra, and is described as a support ninja, but didn't learn healing at any moment of the series. In this essay I-
You know, for a smart person sakura was pretty stupid. I mean she didn't have to fight, just use her "smarts" to win over her opponents like Shikamaru but no... she's to lazy to apply herself in battle but to diligent to beat the crap out of her teammate
This is one of those times where the manga did it so much better, the wound on Shinos face with the bugs crawling out from under his skin, Zaku's arms getting litteraly blasted apart and us being shown pieces of blown apart bug in his hand holes. I remembered getting chills reading that chapter and it being a huge eye opener for how badass Shino could be.
Shino was definitely the hypebeast of the group. He deserved so much more than he got in the series. Dude looked like a menace and could have been in the ANBU
The great thing about the Chuunin Exams was a lot of the characters felt like real threats. Like obviously Gaara is the big one, but still, you had heavy hitters like Sasuke, Lee, Neji, and Shino. As we follow the protagonist Naruto, we can really feel the anxiety as he gets stronger and smarter, and we don't know how he'll measure up. Before his life is at risk, it's his pride that we're worried about.
Out of all the characters, Shino was my favorite in terms of appearance and demeanor. Really disappointed me how much they down played his character in the main story line rather than the fillers.
Shino is a clever guy. He always consider every details and make careful planning. These are the reasons i like him even though he is not powerful like Naruto and others.
To me. Shino is my fav (other than kakashi) and had the potential to be over powered. Cause I believe at one point he said that if a bug survived a jutsu. He'd be able to breed it and have his bugs be immune to that jutsu if I'm not mistaken. That's pretty op and A LOT of potential to play with
A few years late on this but as cool as Shino is here, Zaku was also a menace. Team Dosu was taking on practically every Leaf Genin that came their way in the forest, and their techniques were rather interesting too. Zaku got very ahead of himself and reckless, and Dosu I believe was a contender for actually being a Chunin with his intelligence and fighting style. Its a shame they got killed off in this arc, I think they could've been good additions to Orochimaru's crew had they survived.
0:20 back when I watched it dubbed as a kid I distinctly remember Shino saying "you wouldn't beat me even if you used both arms" and I thought to myself "this guy is stone cold".
Not only was Shino so badass early on that they played Orochimaru's theme for him, but they played it for him *while he was kicking the ass of one of Orochimaru's underlings.*
Man, when fights still had meaning. Ofc, many Naruto fights even endgame were great. But don't get me started on the farce that's Boruto. Early Naruto was the best depiction of ninja.
After Sasuke, Shino is my next favorite character (not to mention my 2nd favorite clan after the Uchiha) I was sadden that Kishi didn't develop him a little more like he did with Shikamaru.
Im not a fan of Naruto anymore. But what initially drew me to the series was seeing characters use these interesting strategies to defeat their foes. It wasn't about straight up power but strategy.
Yea it’s sad that it turned into a knockoff of Dragonball. The real enjoyment for Naruto fans craving more actual ninja stories and strategy should check out fanfic. Sadly that’s all there is for these awesome characters like Shino and Anko.
Ngl I was really hyped for the sound ninja but all 3 of them were just killed off before the end of the chunin exams, I did feel kinda bad for Zaku tho
@@famousmadlad6361 I think they decided to kill all the 'extra character' before the end of chunin exam. (just to gather up the 'main character' such as Rock Lee, Neji Hinata, or Kiba Inuzuka.) And unfortunately, the character in Naruto such as Kin Tsuchi, Oboro, Baiu, Tsurugi Misumi ETC were take such a small roll on the chunin exam. I can easily say they were just a testified wasted character to show us how much the exam is brutal and hard to pass. But this was such unfair. I know this is just anime but I gotta say, they throw them self an epic opportunity to grow Naruto series more greater. (Now its an Burito Shippuden and the whole intro song now days is too damn cancer, give me a break damn!) Remember when there were so many random ninja on the first chunin test? I'm completely disappointed that they all got failed just before the 3rd exam. And most importantly, Dosu Kinuta was so powerful. I don't understand why he got killed by Gaara so easily even tho Dosu got a plot. As long as Orochimaru still alive, Dosu should be alive! I presume final goal of Dosu supposed to kill Orochimaru in the end. But that didn't happen
Man the poor Zaku only existed to get bullied by Sasuke and Shino and then die to Orochimaru... the worst thing is that theses three were actually kinda evil, and Zaku was just a cocky kid
