Shinobue (篠笛) for beginners are a trade-off between price and playability (as well as sound). I'm discussing a range of shinobue: plastic, tamaki and bamboo instruments and their suitability as a first instrument for learning.

Thank you, Markus! I am following your shakuhachi posts, too. I just ordered a 6 hon shinobue, inspired by your teaching here. I look forward to making it through the videos before my flute arrives so I can revisit them with flute in hand.

This is very useful. I have ordered the plastic one; my understanding is that it's actually made by Aulos, which recorder players will recognize. I'm in California USA and for me, ordering on Amazon, the plastic one is about $31USD, which sounds high but probably about the same as ordering from Mejiro. Mejiro uses DHL to ship to the US and I have not ordered from them yet but it sounds obvious that if I want to be "serious" about playing the shinobue at all, I will want to get one from Mejiro. Also, you make a very good point that taiko suppliers will have access to good shinobue's too.

Thank you; I'm glad you found the video useful! 🙂 It's true shipping from Japan is an added cost, but I actually found that the products themselves are often cheaper than outside Japan, so it always a good idea to compare the final cost. The shinobue made by Mejiro are good flutes indeed. If you want to get 'really serious' rather than just 'serious' 😉 you may find that the quality of the top makers (Rippei, Ranjo, etc.) suits you even better. If you ever have a chance to compare makers, that's a good idea, because the flutes are not factory-made, so each one is different.

Fantastic video, thank you! I was struggling on deciding which type to buy, but after watching your videos I decided on a Tamaki #6. It seemed like the best compromise between ease of use, sound, price and "invincibility". I was originally leaning toward a Suzuki (by far the easiest shinobue to get here and would been less than half the cost when including shipping and bag), but based on the comments I could find, it falls under your plastic flute category. The Tamaki being a bit easier to play as a beginner and sounding a bit better while keeping the durability and ease of maintenance advantages does sound like it's worth the increased cost. Would have never known about the Tamaki without your video so a big thank you! Cheapest option would have been those 15$ shipped bamboo Chinese-made shinobue, but I have pretty hefty doubts that they work correctly...

Thanks, I'm glad to hear the video helped making a decision. I still think the Tamaki hits a sweetspot in terms of price and quality. Cheap bamboo flutes are usually cheap for a reason ...

Thank you so much for making this video. Excellent for a beginner searching for a shinobue. I originally purchased two Furyu shinobue (nos. 6 & 8) from Kyoto Taiko Center and definitely do not recommend them. I've been playing for 4 years now and have relied on the Miyamoto Unosuke Shoten Marumiya brand shinobue (I have nos. 4 thru 8). I find their quality consistent and their tuning very good. Thanks again for this video! Hope there's more coming!
@MarkusGuhe
@MarkusGuhe 2 года назад
You're very welcome! I'm glad you like the video! 🙂 Yes, I also like the Marumiya flutes, and considering the small difference in price I think they are a better choice. (Rippei/Ranjo are still better quality but also quite a bit more expensive.)

I personally like Kyoto Taiko Center a lot; it's just that if you're looking for a cheap bamboo shinobue it may be advisable to spend just a little more and get a better flute. But your mileage may vary.

I really want to buy one now but i'm still debating between buying a #8(or 6) or a #3 as i like both the high pitched range and the low and mellow one, what are some pros and cons between the two, and which one is more versatile? Another question i have is about learning resources, like where can a westerner find good books and traditional japanese sheet music for it? Thank you and I hope you'll continue making shinobue videos for all of us, have a nice day!
@MarkusGuhe
@MarkusGuhe Год назад
Hm, that's really just personal preference. Especially if you just play by yourself. Of course, if you play with other people, you should pick a flute with a useful pitch. The 'common wisdom' is that mid-size shinobue (5/6/7/8) are easiest for starting out. (But maybe it's easier with a longer flute if you already play Western flute? I actually don't know.) The best resource for getting sheet music is Mejiro in Japan. (Basically all books are in Japanese anyway, the only exception is Marco Lienhard's book in English.) These two are most commonly used for starting to play: www.mejiro-japan.com/en/node/3266 www.mejiro-japan.com/en/product/book-shinobue-nyumon-cd-available-separately Hope this helps; let me know if you get stuck!

Thank you very much, your videos are so helpful for beginners! Currently I am thinking about buying a shishida flute from Mejiro/Miyamoto because it's the cheapest bamboo flute besides the Tamaki. What are your thoughts on the sishida flute?
@MarkusGuhe
@MarkusGuhe Год назад
I have no experience with shishida flutes, unfortunately. As I said in the other comment, I think an uta flute would be better for your purposes. If you want to go for a bamboo instrument immediately, the Mejiro house brand is quite good!

Great video as usual! Years ago I bought a cheap bamboo shinobue (Furyu) that actually plays worse than ultra cheap plastic ones (I have 3 of them, from Suzuki and Aulos). The only advantage is that it's nicer to look. I see that now they make a new model, maybe it sounds better... The Tamaki sounds good for the price...
@SweetManiacDeluxe

I have the new Furyu. It definitely has a better sound than the plastic one and is playable. But here and there I have some difficulties. I'm saving up for a nicer flute :)

Thanks! And thanks for sharing! I've not had a chance to try the Furyu yet, but from a quick Internet search the tone seems quite rough (may just be the playing though). I'll try to find one one day. Yes, I like the tamaki ...

@@MarkusGuhe It's my first shinobue and I only had online classes so far, so I didn't hear a better flute in person for comparision. For me personally it sounds acceptable for a cheap flute but of course not as nice as the higher quality ones I heard in videos. The tone is definitely not clear. I have many years of experience playing the western flute, so for me it is quite easy to pick up the shinobue. But still I have some difficulties here and there playing the Furyu, I think with a higher quality one I won't have them. But as a cheap beginner instrument it's fine in my opinion. Hope you can get your hands on one and make a better evaluation, when I get a better one I will make a comparision, I hope I won't forget to tell you how it turned out :)
@MarkusGuhe
@MarkusGuhe 2 года назад
@@SweetManiacDeluxe That's good to hear; maybe they are another option for beginners then. but, yes, one benefit of more expensive flutes is that they are easier and more consistent to play. But maybe you're not struggling so much because of your experience; that's a big help! I'd appreciate it if you kept me informed! 🙂

This is a really nice video, thank you. I'm thinking about the Tamaki, since it's not too expensive and better than the plastic one, other than being indistructible, so I can use it to hit my brothers if they annoy me (Joking of course lol). I still have to check how much will the shipping cost be, hope not too much. Do you know anything about personalization? I mean, is it doable to color a Tamaki or a plastic Shinobue?
@MarkusGuhe
@MarkusGuhe Год назад
Continuing the tradition of using bamboo Instruments as weapon. 😆 (The komuso are said to have used their shakuhachi as weapon when they were in a pinch. 😉) Rippei does offer individual orders/personalisation for his bamboo shinobue, but I'm not sure if it's possible with the tamaki. It's always possible to contact him about it. (And if you find out, please let me know!)
@Agefonduge

@@MarkusGuhe nice little fact about the komuso, interesting! I've taken a look on Rippei, from the site the personalisation for Tamaki doesn't seem available, and I don't think I'll write to them. If I change my mind, I'll surely let you know. Thank you

I have seen shinobue without ji. People being allergic to ji is 'a thing', so it you contact a shop/maker, they will be able to tell you about the available options. (Mejiro in Tokyo is always a good starting point!)

How many microphones did you go through before you found one that could handle the flutes? Mine always max out.
@MarkusGuhe
@MarkusGuhe 2 года назад
Haha, yes, the shinobue is LOUD! However, it's usually not a problem with the microphones (they're not THAT loud) but with the input level of your recording device (e.g. mic preamp) or recording software. Try turning that down. Other than that, place the mic further away - the sound pressure level drops very quickly!

Do you have a suggestion on a good and affordable bamboo Shinobue?
@MarkusGuhe
@MarkusGuhe 2 года назад
Well, as I say in the video, the standard models from Mejiro in Tokyo or from Miyamoto Unosuke Shoten strike a good balance between price and quality. 🙂 I wouldn't really recommend flutes cheaper than that.
@SweetManiacDeluxe
@SweetManiacDeluxe 2 года назад
Hello, it's me again! I now bought a higher quality flute from Mejiro (around 12.000 yen) and now I have to say that I DON'T recommend the Furyu. The Mejiro one is so much easier to play! The Furyu is maybe slightly better from the sound than a plastic one, but still quite difficult to play. So if anyone reads this, don't waste your money for Furyu, invest a little bit more and you will have an amazing quality flute from Mejiro!
@MarkusGuhe
@MarkusGuhe 2 года назад
Hello, thanks for the follow-up - it’s much appreciated! 🙂 So, this basically confirms the earlier discussion, I think.I know this price may seem high for some people, but for a quality instrument, shinobue are actually not that expensive. I consider this money well spent. I hope you have lots of funs with your new flute!
