Super super helpful, thank you. I've bee nwatching a few tutorials for the last month, and you gave some lovely information that I've been after. One question - Where might I be able to find some good, beginner books that have notation like that book you showed in the video. Right now, I have managed to get a handle of playing the notes, now I want to work out learning some specific techniques through dedicated notations :) Also, definitely interested in some lssons at some point. :D

Thanks; it’s great to hear you find my videos useful! 🙏 The best resource for getting shinobue sheet music is Mejiro in Japan. (Basically all books are in Japanese anyway, the only exception is Marco Lienhard's book in English.) Good video, thanks to opening my eyes and ears to another beautiful Japanese instrument. I have a Shakuhachi sitting in the corner of my room that I mean to get started with, a resin one. I too am experiencing that typical Scottish day of rain and sun and and wondering if I should bother taking my umbrella with me . . . and of course, I should :-)

Do you happen to know where one might go online to order a shinobue with a custom design? The instrument sounds amazing, but I think the most intriguing part for me is the lacquer designs. I didn't realize an instruments could have such beautiful designs without compromising anything!
@MarkusGuhe
@MarkusGuhe Год назад
Oh, interesting question! I'm not sure I've seen it advertised as an existing service. However, all shinobue are individually made, and many shinobue makers have a 'line' of their instruments that have ornaments. My first ports of call would be (as always) Mejiro (shinobue maker & flute shop), and I know that Rippei (shinobue maker) makes elaborate designs too.

For a beginner a Bb is usually easier, simply because it is a bit bigger, so it's a bit easier to find the right spot to make a clean tone.

I'm not quite sure which type of flute you're referring to, but it is similar to a piccolo flute in pitch and in function (it's high, so it cuts through quite well).

Thank you very much for this informative video!! I am a total beginner and want to start playing a Japanese flute since I am currently living in Tokyo. My goal is to play some sweet anime tracks, so I think I go with the number 6 hayashi shinobue. Do you think it's a good idea to play such a traditional instrument as a total beginner (last time I played an instrument was 10 years ago) and do you have any further advice for me? Next I will definetly watch your other videos!
@MarkusGuhe
@MarkusGuhe Год назад
You're very welcome! 🙂 If your goal is to play anime songs, you should consider buying an uta flute, because they are tuned to a Western scale. I doubt you will find many anime songs played on hayashi flutes (but I'm no expert on this). Apart from this, I don't think you'll have a lot of trouble making a start on the shinobue. (Producing a tone may take a bit at the start.) If you're in Tokyo, Mejiro (used to) offer shinobue lessons. The shop is a great resource, and the owner speaks good English (if that makes a difference for you)!

@@MarkusGuhe sorry for being a total beginner here but what do you exactly mean by "tuned to western scale"?
@MarkusGuhe
@MarkusGuhe Год назад
@@djibrilnewgard5206 I mean that the pitches that you can produce on the instrument (with only minimal adaptation by using meri/kari) are the same as you find, for example, on a piano with a well-tempered tuning. (It's often implicitly assumed that this is *the* tuning, but in fact many other tuning systems exist. It's really because of the ubiquity of Western music and Western instruments that this tuning system is widely spread.) And hayashi flutes have a different tuning.
@dheerajchidambaranathan
@dheerajchidambaranathan Год назад
These are the same as the North Indian bamboo flutes - Bansuri or the Southern Indian Carnatic flutes - Venu. They differ from the western flute in the arrangement of the keys, spacing and the things that can be achieved with the bending of not just the air but also the keys. :)
@MarkusGuhe
@MarkusGuhe Год назад
I don't know much about Indian flutes, but it seems to me that bansuri and venu are quite a bit larger (typically anyway). There are many flutes worldwide with a similar construction, but they all have some differences in material, construction and playing style.
@dheerajchidambaranathan
@dheerajchidambaranathan Год назад
@@MarkusGuhe : Indeed but the bamboo flutes range in multiple sizes based on the scale. An F scale bansuri would look more like a Piccolo flute while an E bass would be about 30 inches or more. :)
