Setup for Optimal Metagross:
Step 0: Pre-Metagross Setup: So before we even get started, there are some key things to do/not to do before you even catch the Metagross.
1. Pick up the Macho Brace (in Pyrite Cave, in the area where you battle Mirror B, • Where Is: The Macho Br... )
2. Catch the Piloswine/Take it’s Soft Sand (Trainer is on the long staircase in the under)
3. Pick up the earthquake TM, but DO NOT USE ( • Where Is: TM 26 - Eart... )
4. Save as much money as you can. This will be important for Protein buying
5. Pick up, and save all three rare candies ( • Let's Play Pokemon Col... )
Step 1: Catching a +ATK Nature Metagross: This first part of the set up can be quite tedious. You need to battle up to Nascour, catch his Metagross, purify, and hope that it’s nature is one of the following:
Lonely (+ATK -DEF)
Brave (+ATK -SPD)
Adamant (+ATK -SP. ATK)
Naughty (+ATK -SP. DEF)
The best way to purify would be to use a time flute right away. Now I know this is annoying to do. But it is so important so you’re ATK stat is high enough to knock out Evice’s Slaking. Also use the Masterball glitch to easily catch the Metagross ( • Pokemon Colosseum Infi... )
NOTE: Once you catch the Metagross, you need to lose to Evice BEFORE he throws out his Tyranitar. If you see it, it’s stats will be locked and will never be shiny for you in a rematch. If you’re paranoid that you messed something up with Evice/Tyranitar, do a few Tyranitar resets with the Masterball, and take note of its gender/HP. If it changes from reset to reset, you’re ok to proceed.
Step 2: Feed Metagross 10 Proteins:
The annoyances sadly do not stop once you have your +ATK Metagross. You need to now ATK EV train the Metagross. We need 252 ATK EV’s total, and the first 100 will be east to get. Hope you saved your money! Go to the Agate Pokemart and buy as many as you need. You can also pick one up in pyrite cave ( • Pokemon Colosseum: Epi... ). Once you've bought and fed Metagross 10 Proteins, it’s time to EV Train! Give Metagross the Macho Brace and head to the elevator in Pyrite Square and look for Chaser Kai (Her screenshot is in the intro)
Step 3: EV Training:
At this stage, our Metagross has 100 ATK EVs, which means we need 152 more. EV training in Colosssum is hard, however there is a pretty neat strat for ATK EV training. Chaser Kai next to the elevator has a Vibrava, which gives 1 ATK and SPD EVs. With the Macho brace equipped, these EVs are doubled. You'll need to knock out the Vibrava a total of 76 times. You can grind this by KO’ing Vibrava, going down the elevator, then back up to reset the area. Rinse and repeat.
Now unfortunately, there is a slight complication: She also has a Phanpy, which gives 1 HP EVs. We can’t simply knock everything out because Metagross will cap out on TOTAL EVs before it’s ATK EV reaches 252 (Remember, a Pokémon can only have a total of 510 EV’s). Count carefully, and knock out Metagross before knocking out the Phanpy (I used a Lv 70 Misdreavus)
Step 4: Obtain the Choice Band:
3 steps in but unfortunately the grind is far from over. The next thing we need to do is grind on MT Battle for 10,000 PokeCoupons. The reasons we need to do this is because we need the choice band for extra damage, and it costs 10,000 PokeCoupons. Grind is the name of the game here. Once you advance further up on the tower, you can repeat levels over and over again which give more coupons. BEWARE: the final area (area 10) contains a Sheninja. Metagross has no way of knocking out said Sheninja. Don’t grind in area 10. Also equip Metagross with the soft sand from step 0. The extra damage boost is huge for earthquake. See below for the Levels/PokeCoupons you can obtain from beating each level:
Area 1: 100
Area 2: 200
Area 3: 400
Area 4: 600
Area 5: 800
Area 6: 800
Area 7: 900
Area 8: 900
Area 9: 1,000
Area 10 1,200
Luckily, after you complete step 4, you should be nearly done with step 5.
Step 5: Grind to Level 100:
The final step is to level up your Metagross to level 100. As previously stated, you should nearly be there. Grind to level 97, then feed it the 3 rare candies from the story. And that’s it!! Exhausting I know, but it makes this hunt a breeze, and it guarantees you’ll knock out Slaking
Final Comments:
There are two easier options that may get you to the same result:
1. PKHex your Metagross. Totally depends on your views/opinions. It’s “cheating” for the set up, but not for the shiny. I personally wouldn’t feel right doing it, but it would save your 20-30 hours of grinding.
2. Use an X-Attack when you start the battle with Evice. Will boost Metagross’ attack stat and may make the EV training irrelevant. I haven’t tested this, but it’s a thought.
