The ship ST. CLAIR arrived under tow to the MRC scrap dock at Port Colborne this morning, Dec.9, 2021. She was maneuvered into place by the tugs MOLLY M1, JOHN D, CHARLIE E, and VAC.
Also the remnants of the ALGOMA ENTERPRISE are seen.
ST. CLAIR was built in Wisconsin; was launched in 1975 and entered service in 1976. The ship suffered major damage from a fire while on layup in 2019 at Toledo. With a length of 770 ft. and a beam of 92 ft. this vessel is too large to fit into the locks of the Welland Canal.
+ + b.1975 Sturgeon Bay, WI - d.2022 Port Colborne ON. Age 47 + +

She was such a busy ship. Always on the move, in and out of the harbor. My kids always recognized her even when they were small. They insisted on buying the refrigerator magnet of her that still adorns the door.

Sailed on her years ago serving in Galley with Chief Steward-Jim Walters and commanded by Capt Nelson. Beautiful ship!

Thanks, I appreciate that. It was the first time I'd seen this vessel, as I guess it never made too many trips this way. It is a sombre moment, like watching a funeral with the tugs as the pallbearers.

You could tell by the intensity of the fire as it was happening, that her future was doomed. Sad to see her final moments now. Thanks for shooting this

How do they get these ships onto dry land for the disassembling?
@RightInNiagara
@RightInNiagara Год назад
At first, they are pushed and prodded by tugs along a sloped-ramp berth as far as they can. They can work on sections of the ship for a while, and then pull it further and further onto shore in stages, as needed, on rollers.

There must be salvage on parts of the ship? Life boats to start?
@RightInNiagara

They do save a lot of items I am sure. The name of the yard is MRS "Marine Recycling Corp." Most of steel hulls they cut down into pieces and send off for recycling. They likely can save some useful parts that could be reused/sold later.

I’m surprised at how many fires have happened on roger blough, and she still sails the lakes today. American steamship company must’ve not wanted to deal with repairing the ship due to the cost so they decided to scrap her.

Why do they blast off her name from the stern or was that from the heat of the fire?

You have no idea how it pains me to see this. I've worked on that ship during winter lay up and I also pre-planned it. I'm a Oregon volunteer FF . That night my hands got tied , I had a team ready to go in but 2 got denied, I was denied drafting so to supply the fighting effort . When I watched the boom belt start a blaze I knew she was done . The assistant city fire chief was praised for the his leadership and received an award from USCC and ASC . 4 days after the fire I was in my station chiefs office with said ass chief and the words said weren't kind . To anyone who looks at M/V St Clair and says gez I wish someone would have but the fire out . So do we

You’re all saying to young to be scrapped. Imagine the rest of the world fleet at 45y or older. Tankers are only allowed to become 25 when taken Care off very well for insurance and cargo owners reasons and only after applying very specific and expensive extra surveys on top of the normal stringent survey system. Container vessels are not a lot older as their efficiency is lacking and 2 generations old. The Jones act is not a bad thing in a way but its going over the top at the moment. Looking at the price of a new build jones act vessel compared to a proper build korean or Japanese vessel. Double the price half the capacity for the matsons build in a Philadelpia. Its hindering the build of more efficient vessels as its nearly impossible to build them due to prices and capable yards.

Lakers are a whole different animal as the cold freshwater environment isn't nearly as corrosive as the ocean. Powerplant and equipment can be upgraded but the hulls have a nearly infinite lifetime in the lakes. There are plenty of 50+ year lakers still operating, and a handful are 70 years old and still going strong. End of useful life for a laker is more about when the hull is too small to run economically or when the capacity becomes excess.
@RightInNiagara
@RightInNiagara 2 года назад
Hi. I would also add that there's a certain calculation allowance to be considered specifically with Seaway-max dimension lakers which fit the Welland Canal. vs. the 800+ ft. lakers which are limited to the market area of the upper Great Lakes. Having too many ships with holds that are 'too large' within a limited market creates its own issues within the four Great Lakes. The economic possibilities within the upper lakes are rather finite. How many 'extra' new St.Clairs or new Barkers can you actually run, before you create over-capacity within that finite area? Also, hauling salt contributes greatly reduces a ship's lifespan. Also, what is the consensus on the question: is the Jones Act beneficial or not beneficial to the U.S. Great Lakes shipping industry? You can drive a car from Japan or Germany, but you can't buy a ship from there? Maybe that's a reason why many Great Lakes ships are so old? Maybe shippers would have updated at least their Seaway-max fleets with modern ships, had Jones Act limitations been updated.

@@RightInNiagara Thanks for posting these videos. I live in Lewiston NY but the Mrs. and I haven't been over since the border was closed, you are our lifeline! Last time we were there they were finishing off Algorail & Algoway and hadn't even started cutting on English River or the Townsend yet! It can be a sad place! I do have some treasured salvaged parts from ships scrapped there in the late 1970's when my cousin was in the industry. As for the Jones Act, I think it all depends on your perspective. From a strictly business case, it is likely more expensive to keep these old boats in service in the long run, but as a fan of the front pilot house designs, I love the fact that the US firms pretty much have to keep updating these hulls. Look at the carnage Algoma Central has caused since Canada lifted their version of the Jones Act. Algorail and Algoway jump to mind immediately, as I watched her demise in person. Thanks again for the lifeline! Hope to run into you in person this summer along the Canal!
