That German coin was most likely struck with Spanish American silver. The Spanish Royal family had intermarried with the Austrian Haspburgs. This resulted to tons of Latin American silver being sent to the Vienna mint and the German States.

Hi Ben. Just as you said you see faces, I saw the face. STOP IT! Power of suggestion. Next thing you know, you will be suggesting I buy coins from you! I know you made me buy that Deep Cameo Franklin. The Germans made coins at a mint, whereas the Spaniards were hammering coins around a campfire in Mexico and South America. The Royal Strikes are beautiful coins. They are more beautiful than German coins. As always, the Athenian Owls are very cool coins. Wise old owls. Thanks.

Wow thanks for helping with the Capitana coins Ben!! They look great. Thinking of buying an NGC holder knockoff from China and encapsulating the other one with the tag that say not encapsulated. Have seen other youtubers show some fakes out there and buy a blank holder for a do it yourself experiment. Could the tooling marks be from when minted and "original" to coin pre shipwreck or (less likely) from after the salvage in 1999? The wave lines do not look 'fresh to me,,, but not an expert. Catch you on the next one !! Tony

An AU coin from 600 BC. They spent it at the market a few times but someone eventually put it in their sock drawer for the next 2600 years. trying to think of how many generations such a coin was lovingly handed down, even if it was sold repeatedly it continued to wind up in the hands of a(nother) caring steward all those centuries. ...or am I wrong, but I don't see how.

Mostly likely it came from a hoard. The current thinking on hoards is that when people thought that they would lose their land or home to an invading army, they would bury their money in pots etc., rather than risk taking the money with them and being robbed or captured and lose it all. Once the foreign invaders had been defeated they would return to their land and dig up their money. One of the oldest numismatists was Caesar Augustus 63 BC - 14 AD, who collected foreign coins and gave coins to other people as presents.
