Ooo, I'm really excited about this series! Vladimir Suchy has become one of my favorite designers of late. Shipyard 2e is a great one, I snagged it earlier this year and played it some months after that.
I have played the original many times and i have to say i MUCH prefer the simple Rondel Mechanic. This complicated cog/cube device is so unintuitive. I would HATE to try and explain this to new players.
Your designer series videos are probably my favorite. I appreciate that the KS previews pay the bills, but I'm always happy to see older games and even happier to see actual reviews. I have so much appreciation for ya'lls opinions!
After looking at some pictures of the pieces that should have been on your player boards, I can TOTALLY see how you would have thought they were the remains of punch board and not actual components. I would have done the same thing. Thanks, as always for a great teach and playthrough.
highly recommend the original. it is far simpler in design and altho it looks more bland and the pieces are smaller, the design is far better. the rondels make it so much easier to comprehend than this cog system.
Needed this. Just got my wife to watch your Yokohoma playthrough and now this. She almost never plays games I get unless she sees your playthroughs. Thanks for this. 😀
really looking forward to this series. Underwater Cities was one of the first games I bought when getting into boardgaming more and it remains a favorite.
Vladimir Suchy is my favourite designer so I'm very excited for this series you're starting. Regarding Shipyard, we played it for the first time earlier this year and we liked it very much. Underwater Cities is my favourite, followed closely by Messina 1347. I haven't yet played Suchy I haven't liked.
great job! as one who comes from a family full of shipbuilders (newport news shipbuilding) repetativeness is not out of the question. i would say, though, that the actions may not in themselves be very thematic, but the management of those actions seem at least poetically reflective of shipbuilding, the action gear, the complicated ships wheel rondel, etc... anyway, thank you!!!
Excited for this series. Shipyard specifically has everything in the recipe to make it a game I love. But somehow it completely fell flat for me. The action selection was interesting but the actions themeselves felt repetitive and uninteresting. It felt more like work. Luckily Suchy has better game that I'm waiting for you to cover.
I feel like they needlessly complicated this game when they removed the two rondels. it was such a nice simple design that flowed smoothly and did not require any loose pieces to be moved around. this is bad design. it also requires more game boards now. -5 out of 10. would not buy or recommend 2nd edition.
