Shiren the Wanderer has finally landed on Nintendo Switch, and brought with it the very most classical interpretation of the roguelike genre that you can imagine. It's turn-based, procedurally-generated, tough-as-nails and unforgiving stuff. I love it.
I've done this video to look at the expanded way that we talk about roguelikes, and how it's starting to stretch the usefulness of the term. FTL, Hades, Othercide and Shiren the Wanderer are all excellent games, but they're also all called "roguelikes" and there's really very little of substance that they share.
So it's a genre definition discussion! Let me know your own thoughts in the comments - always keen to hear from folks, and we'll see you at the next video!

FINALLY a reviewer who knows what he is talking about, this was a great, great video. Do you like this one better than ADOM and TOME?
@DigitallyDownloaded
@DigitallyDownloaded 3 года назад
Thank you for the kind words - I'm glad this was of interest :-). I think ADOM and TOME are much more "hardcore" as far as roguelikes go. Shiren the Wanderer is a genuine roguelike, but in terms of presentation and general design it's a touch more accessible, where ADOM and TOME have a touch more depth. I'm a Nethack player from way back, so I do like my roguelikes hardcore, but Shiren gets me thanks to its lovely anime presentation and sense of humour. So, tough to chose a favourite between all these. I say play 'em all TBH :D. Great genre, the roguelike. Got all the time in the world for the real ones.

I kept a Nintendo DS around solely to play Shiren and Dark Spire on from time to time. Looking forward to playing the Switch version since I never played the Vita version. Thanks for the video.

You're welcome! And I love Shiren and the Dark Spire. I also bust it out from time to time. Very nearly missed it because it was released in such low numbers here in Australia.

The dilution of the term 'roguelike' really bugs the shit out of me. How can people misinterpret it? ROGUE LIKE. As in _like Rogue._ It boggles the mind. My first roguelike was one of the earliest graphical roguelikes; _The Dungeon of Doom_ for the Macintosh. (I swear, I was born like a decade or two late; a lot of my first games were titles like Wizardry on the Apple II, the same games which served to inspire the generation of Japanese developers who went on to create basically the entire Square, Enix, and Nihon Falcom catalogues. The difference is I was in preschool when they were in college.) I only recently stumbled upon _Torneko no Daibouken_ while (re)building a SNES/SFC collection in a fit of midlife crisis, and I immediately recognized its pedigree as a _true_ Rogue-like. Now I own complete-in-box copies of it, Shiren the Wanderer, Shiren 2 for N64, and I'm working on the Chocobo and PS1/PS2 Torneko games. ❤ Kinda wanna make my own classic roguelike in the Mystery Dungeon style. 🤔
@Alexsignal90
@Alexsignal90 3 года назад
Azure dreams, torneko the last hope and shiren are the best rougelikes and my definition of a true rouge like. Even the fighting game with cloud (erhgize?) for the ps1 had a rouge like story mode in the game
@DigitallyDownloaded
@DigitallyDownloaded 3 года назад
I'd throw Chocobo Mystery Dungeon in there - particularly the two on PlayStation original - but yes, I do agree that there's something about the Mystery Dungeon formula that makes it timeless and the epitome of the genre.

While I agree that the roguelike genre has gotten very broad, I feel that it has gone in a similar direction to the RPG genre. RPG is also a very broad genre, so to better describe games that are RPGs, we use “RPG” as a suffix. Platformer RPG, turn based RPG, tactical RPG, etc. With roguelikes, it has become a prefix. Roguelike platformer, roguelike tactics game, roguelike RPG, roguelike card game, etc. “Roguelike” by itself doesn’t mean much, but if you consider it as a modifier for other genres, it becomes much more useful. And we can still say “classic” or “traditional” for games that more closely match Rogue, similar to oldschool RPGs being referred to as “CRPGs”. I feel like these days with the large amounts of genres, we can’t just fit each game into a specific genre anymore. I think this is why Steam uses a tag system instead, where games can be marked by multiple words to describe them.

Shiren is easily my favorite series. The standard of mystery dungeons, in my opinion. Its gameplay is what makes it for me. I never grew up with pokemon and was turned off by Pokemon Mystery Dungeons' lack of difficulty and easier gameplay. I truly wish there were more games like Shiren.

Your reviews...video- or otherwise, are always so much more interesting than others'. Thank you. I have been playing the hell out of Genso Wanderer...I suspect named that as an homage to Shiren the Wanderer. So I've been excited about the advent of Shiren on the Switch, have it pre-ordered, and am hoping that Nintendo is generous in unlocking it early tomorrow, rather than late tomorrow.

Oh man I didn't realize Switch had a rogue like on it. I see this has a physical copy so I'll snag that up. I too am getting tired so so many "rogue-lites" being called "rogue-like". Rogue-like means so much more then "random levels and if you die it's over."

I’m glad you gave a shout-out to One-Way Heroics. That game was great. Zetta Hero Project was also incredible if you’ve got access to a Vita. Like One Way Heroics, it actually incorporates the permadeath elements heavily into the story. Between Spelunky, ZHP, and Disgaea I think I used my Vita so much that it just died one day and never turned back on. NIS America has started to release old PSP, Vita, etc. games in bundles called NIS Classics for the Switch. I have a good feeling that ZHP will be rereleased that way sooner or later, as the main character makes cameos in almost all of their games and they have to be aware of how popular roguelikes/lites have become in recent years. I hope it finally gets the audience it deserves.

The NIS Classics are off to a good start, too! In the process of reviewing the first one now. I hope longer term NISA looks at some of its library stuck on PS3 as well. I'd love to play Guided Fate Paradox again :D

I hate roguelikes, but I love this game and those like it. For sure, it's the false roguelike that I hate; typically, as you state, merely the randomly generated aspect they use.
@sansundertale8765
@sansundertale8765 Год назад
Despite being so closely related to the original Rogue, it is truly interesting that this game would better be described as a "mystery dungeon" game than a roguelike.That in of itself is also a disservice because the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games can often be way too simple in a genre that can offer such deep mechanics.
@techmark3665
@techmark3665 Год назад
It’s described as a mystery dungeon game because it is literally part of the mystery dungeon series.

Rightly or wrongly, I believe the term Rogue-like is understood to mean a game with permadeath , yes randomly generated, but perhaps more significantly, a game that must be completed in one go. Rogue-lite tends to refer to a game with these characteristics but that allows some form of progression to be retained between runs.
@espurr3496
@espurr3496 3 года назад
I think that's the point he was getting at, you "believe", genre's are supposed to be better defined and less vague, when you say "Real-Time strategy" it becomes far more obvious what kind of game its suppose to be.

Rogue original are : turne base, random dungeon items npcs, permadeath. Shiren are a roguelike for me!
@DigitallyDownloaded
@DigitallyDownloaded 3 года назад
Yes, the crux of the video is really that, for me at least, the point of a genre is to help you figure out whether you should be interested in the game (book, film, whatever) based on the genre it belongs to. If I like RPGs, I should pay attention to the new RPG coming out. That kind of thing. It's not perfect of course, but a genre is a shared set of characteristics that define the key elements of a game. The problem with roguelikes and rogue-likes is that they are so broad that I just can't see them being useful. I love Shiren the Wanderer. I don't like Binding of Isaac at all (just a hypothetical example). Should I be interested in the next game that bills itself as a "roguelike?" It's honestly hard to tell. I'd just like to see a narrower scope for the roguelike, so that when I describe Shiren the Wanderer as one, people who have never even seen a screenshot will have a more clear idea about what the game would be like. There's always sub-genres for other games. Anyhow, this is just an academic exercise. More to the point... everyone play Shiren :D

@@DigitallyDownloaded real roguelike fanatics wouldn't consider the mystery dungeon games roguelike at all. there are some made up rules: "the berlin interpretation". those guys will get a heart attack if you call that a classical roguelike. ;) they even argue if genre classics like ADOM can be a roguelike, cause its not open source. or TOME which has unlockable races/classes, which is way to much progression for a purist. but time moved on, its 2020 now and the genre is thriving and the mystery dungeon games are a great entrypoint.

I think the term 'roguelike' didn't "completely lose all meaning". It just shifted from grid-based RPG with random levels and permadeath to random levels and permadeath. That said, nowadays there are pretty much no roguelike games at all. Most games include unlockable items, levels or characters. And none of them follow the rogue formula of: Go down a dungeon, get the amulet, go up the dungeon and escape.
@TranceCore3
@TranceCore3 2 года назад
Nah it did lose its meaning. Roguelike literally meant games that play like rogue, then a bunch of games that didn't play like rogue, got released as Roguelites or whatever the hell people are calling them. But really, they're just arcade games. Most roguelites are remakes of Gauntlet.

100% I hate when devs use that term. It’s like saying a beat em up is a “baseball like” because a bat is in it or an FPS is a “Wolfenlike” because it has guns and nazis in it.

@TranceCore3
@TranceCore3 2 года назад
Too many people just want to debate between the two terms, and IMO the term roguelite shouldn't even exist, because it kind of makes the game Gauntlet irrelevant. It had a lot of these concepts, and was not inspired by rogue. It was a 4 player arcade game, was very good quarter muncher, one of the best.

Strange that this turned into a critique of the loss of meaning of a genre being applied to anything willy nilly. Though not strange enough to stop me from subscribing, because I agree. I also hope that people will grow to be a bit more picky with their games as a result of the loss of quality in games & the gaslighting of what games are expected to be.
