I was sitting in an airline lounge when she sat down just across from me and started reading a book. I was stunned, but was being cool in the sense that the greatest gift that one can give to a celebrity is to leave them alone. No one bothered her, so either all the other people in the lounge were equally cool or they just didn’t recognize her.

Somebody didn't do his homework on this one: 2:15 "... first woman to win an acting Oscar." Hardly! No, I think you didn't look far enough in her Wikipedia entry, "...the first woman to win an acting Oscar AND also have a number-one hit on that chart [Billboard Hot 100]. Janet Gaynor won the first Oscar for best actress in 1929, 5 years before Shirley was born. 3:20 "... she actually won an acting Oscar in 1970... in The Partridge Family. Her role in the FILM increased her level of influence..." No, she was a nominee for a single performance EMMY (not an Oscar = film award) in a TV movie that year (not The Partridge Family), but lost. You seem to be confusing film with TV. They're not the same!

From the inception of her career and right down to when she stopped acting, she always carried the image of "Miss Goody Two Shoes". Shirley Jones was the type of girl you would take home to meet Mamma to be your future wife. There was a goodness about her that was clearly etched on her pretty face. She was blessed with a great singing voice too that was used to advantage in films like Carousel, Oklahoma and Pepe. Playing the sweet ingenue in one film after another [April Love, Bobbikans, The courtship of Eddie's father] may have brought her a modicum of fame, but it wasn't until she played against type as the femme-fatale in "Elmer Grantry' that she was taken seriously as a highly-talented actress. Her role as the tramp in Elmer earned her an Oscar in the supporting category. She was married to film and TV actor Jack Cassidy, and it must have come as a shock to her when she discovered that he was bisexual. Movie fans of the 50's and 60's will always love and remember Shirley with fondness.
