Their relationship was pretty heartbreaking, it seems. Jack just couldn't take both his son's and his wife's success. Jack was bitterly jealous of Shirley, and David seemed to have have had his quick success continually berated for not "paying his dues".
It's funny to recall the little polite mannerisms of times gone by like when Jack did a quick half stand when her friend left the room. I kind of miss when men did that!
I miss the time when men respected women because women respected themselves. Today, men no longer need to respect them, because women, namely young women, will tolerate and accept any treatment from the opposite sex, so as to have someone to brag about on social media (their "soul mate") or, better yet, get that engagement ring on their finger, so they can have a 1000 person, over-the-top drunken party, also known as the modern day wedding reception (forget the sanctity of the actual ceremony), after having lived with the guy for years, until he decided to "pop the question" (with a staged proposal, captured by professional photographer...again for Facebook and Instagram notoriety)...Yep, miss those good ole'days!
People are pigs these days. If you try to instill manners or make suggestions to other parents or children you get yelled at. No respect anywhere. I was born in 57 and was not square, I was cubicle. Now at 64 I am punching out.
I actually thought she looked younger here; I always thought on the show they made her look older so it would be more believable that she could be David and Susan Dey's mother.
@@tubester4567 it's what killed him. Fell asleep with a still-lit cigarette in his hand. He died alone after a fire erupted from that cigarette. He was a bitter old man.
@@kouta43210 And also his bi-sexuality. He even acknowledged his long-term affair with a famous Hollywood director when he was a young actor trying to break into the business in the 1940's.
O Gaines - Yes, she is. She's 87 yrs old now. Remember when she married Marty Ingles...wow, he was a way out there but they remained married for almost 40 yrs up until his death so they certainly loved each other.
Jack Cassidy was a narcissist. He could not stand his son's success. What a pathetic person. He was the reason David suffered his whole life, always trying to please his father. Jack was a miserable excuse for a human being. David was a kind, compassionate and loving man. So sad how his life ended. Gone but always loved and never forgotten.❤️❤️
@@nataliedeshow768 I can see why Shirley Jones ended divorcing him. She filed for divorce from Marty Ingalls twice only for them to reconcile both times.
@@Farrah300 I had a boyfriend who was an alcoholic. I was with him for seven years and all I can say is NEVER again!! Thank God I wasn’t married to him and didn’t have kids with him!! Poor Shirley, she has my sympathies!! Add mental illness to the mix and it’s even a bigger mess!!
@@Farrah300 yes, sadly I think he was very jealous of David’s success as he thought it should have been him. Instead of being happy for him, he was jealous. They never had a close relationship.
@@suave-rider According to David, in his autobiography, that was not the case. Perhaps he was at first, but not as time went on. Jack turned down the role of Ted Baxter on the Mary Tyler Moore show because he felt he was too good for TV. After that, he slipped further into the abyss. The broken relationship with his father caused David great sadness and I'm not sure he was ever able to recover from it.
@Frances Malzahn During This Is Your Life, Jack Cassidy can be seen holding a cigarette. There you have proof that he was likely to start a fire in the middle of the night. His sons have survived him. They are still scarred emotionally by that nocturnal fire in West Hollywood, CA in 1976.
@@kathrynfauble9053 I think David was the most scarred by his father's behavior. Not to say that Shaun, Patrick and Ryan weren't affected, but I think their mother helped keep them grounded.
Unfortunately, with the way America has gone down the crapper, kids today would not relate, I miss those days, they are gone and never coming back, I am glad I were there.
This is when entertainment had class and elegance. David is now with his father Jack Cassidy. Looking at this, I remember David singing I'll Meet You Halfway. I hope that father and son are now all at peace. RIP both.
i guess im randomly asking but does any of you know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account?? I somehow lost the password. I would love any help you can give me
His Father was a jealous tyrant! Don't be ridiculous. David is at Peace while Jack-ass is not. Think about it, if you have any common sense, that is. SMH.
I love the styles, the mannerism and class of these people. Notice how Jack Cassidy rises every time a lady leaves the stage even if she is there for only a minute or two. Wouldn't be be better off if we all practiced the simple courtesies these people display here?
Shirley Jones is so beautiful and sweet. It's amazing her family is beautiful and the Partridge show family so loving with her , Jack Cassidy is a card too ,God bless him and David Cassidy miss them .
Shirley has always been lovely and talented, and clearly loves her real and TV families. It’s sad that David and his dad never had a good relationship. That tepid handshake between them when David comes out to hug Shirley, whom he obviously adored, just breaks my heart. He inherited his dad’s looks, talent and alcoholism; so tragic. They both died too soon. RIP.
Jack was such a jealous tyrant which of course deeply hurt his son David. David became an alcoholic to numb his pain up until he died because he tried to make his father proud and just yearned to be loved. It never happened. That's a deep pain no son or daughter should ever have to even go through, all due to a POS so-called parent. Good riddance, Jack-ass Cassidy.
Lots of fathers have troubled relationships with kids from their first marriages, especially if there was a contentious divorce involved. Plus, at this point Jack Cassidy was very jealous of his son's exploding and lucrative career, while his was on the skids.
Just a handshake from his father Jack .His father could never come to terms with his sons popularity .David may still be around today if his father would have given him a few hugs.
It's amazing, I had forgotten how much class existed on television back in the 60s and 70s. Boy did this show have tons of class - a wee bit different from television today (indeed, there are a lot of great shows now, but the human interaction such as this seems to be missing, to a degree).
There's a video on RU-vid with Angie Dickinson. She was given one of these this is your life shows. She got mad. People wrote in the comments how great it was a she got mad now rude it was that they surprised her with this. I couldn't believe how many people which was most supported Angie's reaction. People did the show to honor others. They were playing her a compliment.
@@merricat3025 Well, sorry to hear of that reaction; I agree that it was an honor to be honored like this. Most folks who got this probably were gracious 🙂
@@voicetube Well, luckily they are pros and know how to be gracious even when they are full of anxiety and stress about it as Shirley Jones is here. I would freak out if this was done to me publicly.
@@merricat3025 Go watch the video of Dickinson again.. She was lied to and showed up under false pretenses. She has no obligation to do the show. Absolutely right not to do the show.
Well, I was a fortunate one that had the privilege of handling the actual film of "The Partridge Family" tv series back in the early 1970's at Brisbane, Queensland, Australia TV station BTQ 7. I remember very well running that "Partridge Family" film through my fingers on a daily basis and loading it up on the station's telecine projectors for air. One could never replace that experience. Telecine in television broadcasting has long gone. It was a great family tv series and based on the real life family of pop music, The Cowsills who had a string of huge hits worldwide.
Wow, I heard rumors about that. Maybe that is why he resented his son and wife. He might have been hurt the producers did not want him on the show. That would have cool if he had been a cast member. It might have mended his relationship with David. Shirley stated many times how she and David grew close during the production.
What a cold, forced handshake Jack gave David when he came out, yet he hugged his kids, with Shirley Jones You can clearly see Shirley adored David! I don't understand a parent being jealous of their own child's success. I feel that had an effect on David his whole life. So sad , I'm glad he's at peace now
I heard a radio interview on Facebook where David Cassidy talks about his father . . . it was around 2015. He actually started breaking down during the interview when he talked about his father not being there for anything. He wasn't there for any plays he was in, any of his little league games, nothing. All the other kids father's would be there, but his Dad never showed up. I was surprised that after so many years, he would get so emotional, but he did. David loved him and idolized him. His father just wasn't able to give him what he needed. He had his own issues I guess.
You sometimes I think David Cassidy instinctively knew he wasn't going to be around and live a long life. Someone had indicated that perhaps he got emotional in that interview because he was starting to look back on his life as he knew was wasn't going to be around. He even said at his birthday party (2011 I think), -- he was making a speech and he wanted to thank everyone who was there and said something like, "I may not have this opportunity again, and then he said, "maybe I will, but who knows what could happen in the next ten years." I found that so odd that he would say that . . . he wasn't that old . . . why would he say who knows what could happen in the next 10 years? And guess what -- he sadly didn't make it. Some people just know when their time is coming. I wish he was still here though. He could have lived another 20 years, maybe longer if he took better care of himself. I don't blame him though, because addiction is a extremely difficult thing to overcome.
LuvTadnDixie Wow. How sad. Painful stuff from childhood haunted David his whole life. Whose to say any of us would of handled it any better. RIP David Cassidy
@@grahamharvey3159 oh they had their similarities. Both were alcoholics. The only thing that was difference was David was far more successful than his dad and David's father could not stand it.
The colors, the furniture, the clothes - having a severe 70's flashback! Shirley Jones is the best. A lovely voice and person. And there will never be a better Julie Jordan. Lastly, how fabulous to have the great Richard Rodgers himself give you praise. :o
How beautiful looking is Shirley and appears so nice. Not full of herself at all and genuinely appears to be over the moon to see all these old people from her past.
I always believed Shirley Jones was a good step mom to her loving step son David Cassidy a stood by him loved him a did her best to help him thru all his up bringing a hardships I believe she loved a admired his talent
Yes you can tell she loved all her boys and accepted David as her own. That's why David Cassidy was so loving and such a gentleman. He was so good to his fans. Im sorry he had to suffer w the disease of alcoholism but I think the family was always close. He probably did have a complicated relationship w his dad but stardom can ruin lives too.
@@frannyfaye2683 Someone should have staged an intervention for David to stop drinking. With all his fame and amazing good looks....not to mention his talent....nothing seemed to give him peace of mind or whatever one needs to take control of their life. Even his wives couldn't get him to stop. David looked sooo much like his father. Jack seemed to be jealous of David.
As they say you can lead a horse to water, but can't make it drink. David mentioned being in recovery on a talk show back in 2013 I believe. I am assuming family and friends tried, but it wss really up to him. I was shocked he damaged his organs like that. That wss some drinking he did.
She is a strong lady. Marty died a few years before David did. In addition she lost two costars. Ralph seemed like a big fan of the Partridge Family. Since her mom died when she was a little girl, Shirley was like a second mom to Susan as well.
krahung Hell yes! She was absolutely gorgeous. My god, I crushed on he so hard back in the day. I believe she was among my first, prepubescent crushes. (along with Princess Leia)
A lot of guys who watched The Partridge Family had a crush on Susan Dey, but maybe those were mostly boys under the age of 14. You don't hear much about the teen guys ( and older guys) who had a crush on Shirley Jones. But also there might have been some female fans of The Partridge Family who had a crush on Dave Madden rather than David Cassidy.
I really like this video. The quality of it looks so good I can actually feel the vibes from that time with the clothes and the way people were back then. My goodness Shirley Jones had such a pretty face back then.
I was a young boy when the Music Man came out but when I saw Shirley John's appear as Marion, madam librarian, I fell in love with her and I've never felt different to this day. I'm 68 years old so it's been a minute that I've felt as I di about this most appealing wonderful star.
She is such a gracious lady. Just the same in person - not a mask she wears in public. Completely lovely and talented in every way. Thank you for posting this. So happy I got to see it.
This woman had poise! We don' t see that much anymore in women. And it's sad to see the distance between David and his father. Jack had a sore spot for his son's success. Very sad.
@@kouta43210 he was very good looking but I heard he was a terrible father and husband!! Also I think he was bisexual and had a few relationships with men as well as women. He was talented but very troubled.
Shirley was very gracious about this. What a stark difference between how Shirley accepted this 'surprise' and how Angie Dickinson behaved. Angie told them she wasn't f- ing going to do it.
To SumerKis38---Thanks so very much for sharing this. It's much longer than the other clip of this I have seen on youtube. I think the thing I enjoyed the most is David Cassidy's adorable laugh at 2:18. He appears to be really enjoying the surprise they are all springing on Shirley Jones. I know this is about the people and events in Shirley's life, but David always steals the show for me! Forever gorgeous!
David's laugh was one of the best things about him. He was well-known for his smile and laughter, and it's easy to see why. Both are infectious and they make people feel good. It always makes me happy when I see him happy.
What Class! In spite of all the stories throughout the years about Jack Cassidy….He did have that gentleman quality that you just don’t see anymore! I remember my Grandfather had that. Genuine Class and Respect!
Shirley was and is a lovely woman. She's 85 as of this writing (March 2020), still performing. She lost 2nd husband Marty Ingels in 2015. First husband Jack Cassidy died in a house fire in 1976, two years after he and Shirley divorced. He was only 49.
What a wonderful program. There was also a UK, and here, Australian version of TIYL. Back then it was an era when artists' talent and contribution to the industry was recognized and acknowledged with shows like this. Sadly, television isn't like this anymore.
Brings back memories. I was 17 and in a couple of months graduating High School. I was there, the US. and everything and everybody was so Anglo, except for José Jiménez, AKA Bill Dana. It's all gone but not forgotten! Loved it!
I’ve loved her all my life and astonished more people are not as in awe of her greatness as I have always been!!! She is one of the truly great singers / performers, ever!!! ❤️🙌👏🏻💐🌹
14:55 I've loved Cameron Mitchell since I was little, not quite as young as my Winnie the Pooh record player, playing David Cassidy in the mid 70s, but by 78 I found him on High Chapparral. You can tell how much all the kids love her. It is adorable! I just love Shirley Jones. Thank you for this upload.
She really was and still is a "STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL" woman. As she got older, she just got more beautiful and seem like a very nice person as well. One of my all-time favorite blonde beauties....
(sigh) God Bless them all. What a blast from the past to see them all so young and full of life. We lost little Susan K. when she was an adult from a heart condition and lost Shirley's husband Jack under tragic circumstances and now as of 2017 David is battling early stages of Dementia that claimed his own mother, Jack Cassidy's first wife whom was also an actress.
Its great how back in the old days things were just so different then. They were pure and kind. Plus i love the fact you could light up a cigarette on stage. I would love to go back in time in a time machine.
actually people had more asthma attacks back then and got bronchitis every month which was painful and babies and elderly people and dogs and cats died from lung failure from all the nasty secondhand smoke air pollution. And that was just the short term diseases; of course other people died from cancer in the long term from breathing the secondhand smoke, I know cause I grew up as a kid around smokers and had plenty of asthma attacks and bronchitis infections and sinus infections. Just look up indoor air pollution from the EPA and get your head out of your butt and think about other people and pets around you who also have to breathe for a change. The world does not evolve around you and your smoking addiction.
Shirley Jones always A Class Act😍 Like so many young girls in the early 70s we crushed on David big!!! I was grateful to see him back in 2012 he did his last free concert at a park on Long Island about 3wks before I moved away. RIP David God called you home.
