Oh grow up you. Manifesting is a LIE, PR bubble of nothingness, big wordsalad that is sold at industrial scale to naive fools like you. People don't manifest illness, war, misery, abuse, starvation... You wanna think you're in control, go ahead. Wait till life suprises you. Look around, and think how much of this is ''manifested'', did I manifest lifelong illness, tell me? Do you not realize how callous this ridiculous belief is?
Fun fact is that every time Jack Nicholson won Oscar, main actress also won Oscar. Louise Fletcher in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Shirley MacLaine in Terms of Endearment and Helen Hunt in As Good as It Gets.
I just watched the movie and I couldn't agree more. She was so classic, so genuine, so raw in that scene. whew And my fav scene of Debra's was the moment of her death. Wowza. She convinced me.
Brilliant, one of the most talented complicated and interesting people to ever walk the earth. Thank you Shirley Maclaine for everything you have given to entertainment. What a lady!
That part of “Terms of Endearment “ where Debra Winger reaches out her hand to her mother right before she dies is really powerful. If that doesn’t cause emotions then nothing will.
Totally agree with you. Also there should have been at least another Oscar nomination for Madame Sousatzka (1988), which I consider to be her finest "mature" screen performance.
The death scene in terms is simply one of the most amazing scenes in cinematic history. From the "look" from Debra to the background music even. But, the interaction between Shirley and Jeff in the scene is what does it for me. Throughout the movie their characters relationships with each other was tumultuous but yet they hugged still. Man this whole movie is something else indeed.
it's amazing to notice how much jack influences his co-actresses. All the 3 oscars he won, the co-actresses have won too....jack-louis Fletcher jack-shirley, jack-helen hunt.....this guy is one of a kind....
I agree her acceptance speech brilliantly walked the line between showing grace, gratitude and also rightfully acknowledging herself for something she did deserve. It doesn't get better than this.
@@grandmalovesmebest Shirley MacLaine's big problem Is that in her heyday she was completely overshadowed by superstars like Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn who were payed more and were way more popular, however this late Oscar maybe is One of the reasons of her incredibile career longevity, she is still working on a regular basis while Audrey virtually retired in 1967 and Sophia has been appearing on the screen occasionally from the end of the 70's up to a few years ago. Elizabeth too virtually retired before she was 50 years old
She was so good at her role in "Terms of Endearment" that she was able to pull off one of the hardest things in the Academy Awards: winning an oscar while competing with a nominee from the same movie who deserved it also.
Both performances were wonderful. Even though I wasn't a fan of hers beforehand, Shirley's performance was so earnest I thought for a solid two hours that she was my actual mother. Not only did I think that Debra was beautiful but this was the first performance of hers that I had ever seen, and her performance was so adorable that she melted my heart and made me fall in love with her (I often joke that she probably has a 3D printed copy of Shirley's Oscar at home).
For real. I didn't realize she was up against Meryl Streep in Silkwood! I think I remember her saying in one of her books that she manifested this win. So happy for her.
@@GG1Productions You should look up how Diane Wager farted in her face, and how and Jack held her down while Wagner licked her leg. I sometimes wonder how Timothy dealt with her.
Shirley tells the truth here. There is no difference between success and what you feel in your heart that you must do. I understand this now. THANK YOU Shirley! You've helped my life more than you can ever know.
VERY deserved win here. People can say what they want about MacLaine, and think that she's weird with all her otherworldly and spiritual beliefs, but she is a BRILLIANT actress, and that can't be disputed.
+Love Animals At least Shirley has a sense of humor about her off-center beliefs. I busted a gut when she popped up in the "Past Lives Pavilion" from Albert Brooks' Defending Your Life.
...And there is a great deal to say. She is however, one of the greatest actresses of all time, and always likable on camera, even when portraying largely unsympathetic characters.
just watched "terms of endearment" again for the first time in several years....Shirley definitely deserved the Oscar.....its one of the best "best actress" wins ever! and the movie still stands as one of Hollywood greatest tearjerkers of all time!
zanetierney It's odd I guess, that I've never seen that movie. I certainly remember it being out (I'm turning 50 this year), but it just never appealed to me and I still haven't seen it.
Big Valley don't forget she is also Warren Beatty's sister, maybe Warren was less cocky than Shirley, but still it should have being a tie not, beating by 5 procent of the voting, maybe Maclaine has beat Winger by 5 procent at the time
There are roles for older women but she is getting older. The awards are flawed in that way really. Also, sometimes but not always they jinx the person and they are never heard from again.
I must confess that this acceptance speech was a contributing inspiration for the one I gave at my daughters wedding. Begin and end with humor, color it with contemplative spirituality and philosophical truths, and generously acknowledge others in a loving way. Thank you Shirley, and you can now count 3 daughters, including mine.
Shirley MacLaine's character in "Terms of Endearment" was eccentric, with any number of unpredictable characteristics and foibles that had to be played convincingly. Her role as Aurora was much more of a challenge than Debra Winger's role as Emma. I would imagine that Shirley's brief moment with Debra as she headed to the podium to accept her Oscar was one in which she graciously acknowledged how close the vote between them must have been. I was surprised to recall that this was Shirley MacLaine's only Oscar for Best Actress. She certainly deserved one earlier on, particularly for her performance in "The Apartment".
So true. In Debra’s last scene, just before she dies, she looks at Shirley McLaine and says goodbye with a flicker of her eyes. No words needed. That is true acting.
Shirley Maclaine's performance, without fail, brings me to tears. Some say 'Terms of Endearment' has not aged well, and I say they're crazy. James L. Brooks understands the human condition better than most directors.
You, Shirley MacLaine and Jack Lemmon both deserved to have Oscars in the wonderful story of "The Apartment". You had to wait a little but yes you deserved it for TOE! It was the first videotape I rented from the local store some years after the theatrical release and was touched. Carry on entertaining us please.
I loved the sequel to "Terms of Endearment" called " The Evening Star. " Not many people know about it as everyone I've asked say they've never heard of it. Shirley MacLaine and Jack Nicholson are both in it. It shows you afterwards when the Grandchildren have grown up. Juliet Lewis plays the teenage Granddaughter. The full movie is on RU-vid. Definitely worth a watch ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CLyW7HVfGkE.html
She's genuinely funny and moving. This is simply the most striking acceptance speech I've ever heard. Shirley's a true talent and quite a beauty. Anyone who's seen her in The Apartment can not even begin to disagree. I mean, seriously, where are women like that these days?
Shirley Maclaine’s candidness and body language clearly reminds me of Olivia Colman’s oscar acceptance speech; both were funny and animated but at the same time, truthful with what was in their minds.💐
I had forgotten what an incredibly strong category it was that year, as well. Any one of those women would have been an absolute lock in another year, but Shirley's performance in "Terms of Endearment" really was worthy of winning.
@@danielscottrussell3365 Who would have expected roughly 18 months later Rock Hudson who presented Shirley MacLaine with her Oscar that night would be dead from complications of AIDS at 59.
I was 22 when this movie came out. When I get a little down about the relentless passing of time, I see something like this and am so glad I grew up in a time of quality film making and quality music.
I have always enjoyed Shirley MacLaine's work on screen, but I still think Debra Winger deserved this Oscar more for having such a transformative performance in this movie. Really sorry she stopped working so many years ago, she was a real favorite of mine when I was growing up.
I still admire the words in the speech she used. I saw this ceremony in 1984 and many thanks to youtube that i could listen those words after 26 years.
Being good is not the same as being nice, Shirley Maclaine moved me in this movie and I think made the movie, she if anyone 'deserved' an oscar or in this case the oscar. Whether you think her a good or bad mother or her daughter a good or bad daughter is a bit beside the point. It is not a morality contest.
Lol,…I have a dear friend who was Shirley’s rehearsal pianist for years. I remember he said after seeing this, “She deserves the award for portraying a nice person.” Love that.
Seeing Shirley with her daughter makes me glad that no matter the problems between them, they will always have this great memory of Shirley winning Best Actress for her role as a mother in a mother-daughter movie, and her real daughter was her Oscar date. When Shirley moves on, this clip will be the one we'll see over and over again, for sure.
It's so refreshing to see such an intelligent, sophisticated, funny speech at an Oscar. Other actresses/actors should watch this and learn something from it.
What wonderful performances this year! I knew about the outstanding performances from both Debra Winger and Shirley MacLaine in Terms of Endearment (Shirley MacLaine so deserved the Oscar), but I forgot that Silkwood came out at about this time, too! Meryl Streep was also amazing in her performance (as always)!
They didn't have to sell so much advertising back then they actually let the artist speak they gave them the time to say their opinions clearly whether you loved or hated them it was all pure back then now it SUCKS!
Shirley was amazing in this role - the scene when she screams at the hospital staff when her daughter needed the pain shot was just brilliant - how a real mother would react and the scenes with hunky irresistable Jack Nicholson. I can't believe I only just watched this fantastic movie. It is in my top 5 all time favourite list. A wonderfull film xxxxxx
We don't see standing ovations (or very rarely) in Oscar ceremonies prior to the mid to late 80s. It's a shame especially in cases like this where one would have been extremely appropriate.
Years from now Shirley MacLaine's performance as Aurora Greenway in Terms of Endearment should be used as an example of truly great screen acting. Her saturation went down to the bone. Because of her efforts, we understood this character as well as Shirley did, passing through the stages of life along with her. A woman capable of love but with a closeness which had to be forced and somehow at the cost of her basic fairness to humankind. Hopelessly imperious and so fearful of growing old she expects her grandchildren to call her "Mrs. Greenway." Extremely funny in spite of a set of characteristics which can only be viewed as pitiful. Brava Shirley. The Oscar was a long time coming but could not have been more deserved.
+laxus 94 Bullshit. I love Debra, but she just cant be compared to MacLaine, who was not only by far the best part of that underrated film, but she stole every scene she was in as Mrs. Greenway. Debra was a shadow in comparison.
