I am currently getting my Ph.D. In chemistry studying Li-Ion batteries, so I might be able to help. Academia is constantly in a flux of collaboration, so I am not surprised by graduate students and Post-Docs jumping back and forth between Meng and Dahn’s research groups which then go on to get jobs at companies like Tesla, because of the reputations of both their former research groups. It is very likely that Maxwell also partnered with UCSD for a 3rd party validation of their battery technologies. This would have been the direct tie to Meng and her research, probably with many of her graduate students doing the testing that Maxwell required (therefore giving them inside knowledge of current industry technologies and likely ease of getting a job in the future) You are probably right about Tesla not moving away from cylindrical cells for the production of their batteries. Currently, in academia the standard for real-life batteries is the pouch cell. It is easier for labs to produce due to lower-cost equipment need for the production on a lab scale. Most chemistries should easily be translated between types of cells, so that shouldn’t be a problem. I will try to come back and answer some more of your questions tonight when I have time but feel free to reach out and I can try to answer any more questions you may have.

I think Tesla is crazy about NDAs. There's a guy who was working on a project with electric car conversions, published everything, all open source, all about providing information and insight into repurposed electric motors from smart cars, and then suddenly nothing was ever said again. Turns out he got a job with Tesla, and he won't say anything more about the original project, nor will he say anything about the work he does at Tesla or what Tesla is up to... Could be he's just too busy, could be he's not allowed to talk about anything related to his work. I suspect it's both.

There are a few items of batteries that are important: 1 depth of discharge (rate of discharge or charge may occur) 2 charge capacity (often measured as W*hr) 3 reliability (often measured as number of charges over life) Typically time, temperature (external and internal) and charge numbers and rate are the variables in play. My speculation: 1 New electrode chemistries will provide Higher density charge capability likely will increase rage by at least 1.5 to 2x. 2 solid electrodes will decrease charge time, as rate capability will increase 3 Likely, maxwell super capacitors will function with fast rate and internal temperature dissipation for high energy burst (acceleration) helping significantly with battery life. I am curious to see how decrease / removal in dendrites will keep capacity over time.

Fascinating study. I think it is important to realize based on your excellent investigation and logic applied to the problem, that the current Li Ion battery is not the end game in battery design. Tesla is, to your point, making huge efforts in this area. The reduction in cost of the batteries is the current limiting factor that will enable exponential sales growth. Higher energy density can be used for both improved performance, or for reduced vehicle cost with existing performance characteristics. Great video, state of the art stuff here.

Awesome Job!!!! I can't compliment you enough! This is the kind of journalistic content I long for when I go click to watch an EV video. Too often Nicki, Alex, and even Zack & Jesse are just repeating the same old news. Often articles that I've already read. This one is great stuff. You did the work first hand (research) and, while I know it's a fair bit of speculation, you revealed insights that add up to something. I wish I could point you to an article I read a couple months ago about how the DBE works. Or to say, how the manufacturing works. What's different about it. I think having a clear understanding of that would help you in your assessment. I think the article was on seeking-alpha. When I went back to find it later I couldn't. After reading that article I came away thinking that DBE could be implemented a lot quicker that I had previously thought. I was previously skeptical about any Goodenough-Tesla connection, or even a connection to his technology. But from what you've uncovered perhaps there is something. I'm very much looking forward to the battery and powertrain day. As a vested Tesla investor I'm very interested in what they will have to say. Unlike autonomy day, it could possibly rock the automotive world. (Not to say autonomy shouldn't have, just that people didn't get it. I think they'll get batteries.)

Maybe the Dahn electrolyte version will be licensed to LG Chem and CATL to allow Model Y volume without the Panasonic bottleneck. Meanwhile the solid state million mile version will be done by Tesla / Maxwell / Hibar in house.

It is really great to see these connections that are all in Tesla's circle. As Elon said, if you were looking to produce a new type of cell, you would contact the largest manufacturer of that type of cell, to test it and validate it and it appears they have. Tesla will have a lead on all others unless LG, Samsung or CATL come up with something better.

Perhaps Goodenough asked for some backup and testing of his findings/hypotheses. He wants stuff to be applicable to mass production, after all. When Maxwell became too integral, it became wise to acquire them. Someone has to do the heavy lifting and they can do much more than just lab work.

Wow!! I'm not all that concerned with video or sound quality as long as I can understand what is being said without distraction. Great work in finding connection and possible direction of Tesla battery development. I think this sounds like Tesla should license their current generation battery technology or sell the current battery with the skateboard. If this end up where I think it will, Tesla WILL have 600+mile roadster and long range Semi without problem. gonna have think long and hard about buying several more blocks of Tesla stock. Great Job Galileo and please keep me informed as I do not have the time to do this kind of research.

As I understand it (materials chemist) The main issue with solid state electrolytes is that they must remain in good contact with the cathode and anode with repeated cycling. The problem is essentially getting two materials that are constantly shrinking and growing to stick together. Dry battery electrodes may not solve this problem any better than existing electrodes.

I just watched a video (it's in Russian so i won't provide the link) where a guy who dissassembles EVs and reuses its batteries said that pouch cells in some of the competitors of Tesla surpassed tesla batteries in energy capacity in 2017-2018. He said Tesla either will have to switch to pouch cells or somehow change the battery chemistry completely.

I think that is unlikely in the short term. Highly advanced battery tech would give them a great competitive advantage. And they will likely need all the output to supply their own cars and energy systems. With batteries costing significantly less, I can see home and industrial scale storage systems selling like hotcakes.

Great research broadcast. Really starting to pull some threads together. Thank goodness for google. 10 secs of typing vs 10 full time research assistants! Only thing I can think of adding is that glass is typically flat and brittle. This factor, if relevant, would imply rectangular pouch battery architecture. To me pouches seem intuatively a more versatile configuration, simpler to manufacture. Keep it up. Cheers.

Bummer you missed the news about Nikola Motors claiming to have a greatly improved battery for 2020 too, including 500Wh capability, would have been cool to hear your thoughts on that. The battery wars are heating up and even though Nikola as a company makes my skin crawl and Tesla is surely gonna trump their tech I'm glad there is visible movement in the industry now.

All the competition - while agressively competitive - is excellent for our transition to sustainable energy and transport, and while I agree with your sentiments on Nikola as a company, this sort of rivalry is what drives progress and innovation.

@@brunosmith6925 It's often a double-edged sword. Limiting innovations by sitting on patents or deliberately buying patents or the companies that own them to only hide them away is often a result of aggressive competition. There are many aspects of business competition that stifle progress.

Nikola has been front-running every thing Tesla does. It's a tactic. They are saying "Don't ruin your appetite on Tesla's buffet, we have a more delicious offering soon." They have yet to even demo a working product. I am beginning to suspect they were invented to pull interest away from Tesla's Semi and will disappear once Tesla's delivers.

Yes. One issue with announcing early is that a lot of people might hold off buying current products for the next gen battery tech. Their sales would likely tank during that gap from announcement to production.

I am still looking at the garnet 'glass' from Braga and Goodenough. Seems to have a capacitive charge effect. My feeling is that you need about ten seconds of capacitance (whatever ~5kwh is for ten seconds) to blow the minds of most 'gearheads' in accel/decel. This and solid state already blows my mind. I think that the single crystal garnet needs to be flat and not rolled.

Great research finding all the connections. It is pretty obvious there is a breakthrough related to power density but what specifically. Regarding the audio, you mentioned you had to use the mic in the phone and are not using the boom-mounted mic to your right side. If that one function, it would do well hanging just above your head outside the frame and forward towards the camera a few inches past the plane on your face would reduce the reverberant field sound that destroys intelligibility. I gave me a headache concentrating on your voice content. By getting the mic direct signal much stronger than the reverberant field the signal to noise ratio would improve a lot. You do not need an expensive mic, any $1 electret element mic close to the source will eliminate the problem better than spending a lot on a hyper-cardioid mic or so-called Shotgun mic. A cheap Omni-directional mic close to the source will always sound better than a $5000 mic mounted 10 feet away. A cheap wireless mic can be had for less than $20 could eliminate a cable but since you are not moving position much, the overhead boom mic or a clip-on omnidirectional mic on your collar wired into your recorder would be the cheapest and more effective than the so-called video mics that companies like Rode have convinced non-audio types that they are good enough mounted on the flash shoe. Waste of money. They use the same less than $1 Panasonic Omni-directional electret element in a fancy case. If you need any suggestions let me know. As a recording engineer and large recording studio owner for 25 years and the studio recording top hits and nearly 200 gold and platinum albums, a bit of advice could make a big difference with very little spent, if anything. I suspect some did not continue watching because of the discomfort in filtering out the room sound from the incident voice wave. Your content is so good that it would be a shame not to hear it.

A battery breakthrough is needed before electric cars become mainstream as demonstrated by this video. In 1900, electric cars actually outsold gasoline cars. However, electric cars eventually completely disappeared. There have been many attempts to resurrect electric cars including the Henney Killowatt in 1959. Wikipedia has an excellent article on this history.
