Mar.14th: Happy birthday Soul-Jazz-Hard bop organist Shirley Scott (1934-2002) Thank you and God bless. RIP. Thanks for the upload, Doodlinlounge. Blessings
I love her so much. She swings so hard but doesn't show off unless she has to, everything she does means a lot and it's just hard to believe how underrated she was. I love her.
I was there for this! One of the greatest shows I have ever been to. Thought it would exist only in my memory...then I stumbled onto this. Thank you, Doodlinlounge!
Not quite 30 years between SF performances. Shirley Scott played at Keystone Korner in 1972 or 73. I was at that show. She was touring with tenor sax great Gene Ammons at the time. I believe George Freeman was the guitarist for their quintet. I don't remember who played bass or drums.
I know your're right because I was there too! Shirley's hands just flew across the keyboard and played the bass line all up and down the pedals - amazing. And Jug, what can I say? One of the greatest tenor players ever. Course it was around that time I saw Jimmy Smith do a "fly in" gig in the SF airport lounge. SF was pretty happening even then.
Hello Pete , Hope your well. This is a very nice vid!! Thanks for sharing. Last time I saw you was a few years back while prepping for for my Tony Monaco production at The Acton Jazz Cafe. Would love to see more contemporary Shirley. Best, Dale Parker
Is there any tape of Shirley and Stanley Turrentine LIVE @ THE FRONT ROOM in Newark,N.J. from 1964? The live show is top shelf on vinyl. Thanks for the memories!
shirley was one of the best who ever lived. now that's the organ room sound! but shirley scott was so harmonically advanced she was more on jimmy's level. if you listen to joey--you can hear some of shirley in there. joey and jimmy had the utmost respect for shirley scott. wish i played half that well...
