Mintz was born in 1957, and shifted his interests from violin performance to conducting by the 1990s. Given his apparent age, this recording was quite likely done about 30 years ago.
17:00 that is the best thing I've ever heard on a violin. The way Mintz is able to dig so deeply in the G string while the E string is still vibrating just shows what an outstanding musician and talent he is. It is incredibly difficult to pull off that effect on a violin, because one has to first create a long drawn out sound on the E string, then move the bow extremely quickly and accurately from the E string upwards to the G string without any mistakes(hitting other strings along the way), and then almost instantaneously create a dragging sound on the G string before the E string has even stopped sounding. That is just simply marvelous.
True, they set the right pace for Shlomo and this is a true appassionato, not some amorphous something I heard at the last Wieniawski competition; this recital is truely passionate, exactly as it should be.
Shlomo Mintz rejects the Heifitz style and leans more towards a Stern or Oistrakh. And that's a good thing, especially when it comes to a piece as rich and warm as this one. Gorgeous!!!
this is literally the best interpretation of anything ever done. holy mackerel i wish i could do anything as well as he played this piece, let alone play this piece XD
This is literally so perfect. This piece will always have a special place in my heart (it was the last piece I played with my first violin teacher before I went off to college), and his version was one of the things that helped me fall in love with it. I keep finding myself coming back to not only this piece, but this version, and my emotions are the same every time
All phrases of the first movement 0:31 - The opening 2:56 - Solo entrance 4:01 - When it gets spiced up 🔥 4:46 - Mysterious part 5:32 - Intense part 6:26 - Warm & lovely part 7:29 - Most beautiful part 7:55 - Happy part 8:33 - Powerful ending part 9:23 - Ending of first movement 1:42 Is that bassist wearing sunglasses?
His emotion towards this concerto is absolutely brilliant & excellent. Amazing performance !! Thank you Shlomo Mintz !! This video helps me to practice a lot.
Perhaps because he died so young, and his pieces are performed mostly as "showpiece encores". His 2nd concerto, I think you'll agree, is a masterpiece of the romantic period violin concerto --- as beautiful as any other.
I feel the same , Where was I? Have been listening for 50 years, and I have just started to hear and indulge in his music two months ago…( at first with : Variation on an original theme Opus 15) and now His violin concertos 1 & 2. I emotionally teared up with his music, and this doesn‘t happen often with other composers. I am fortunate to have found him!!!
That's called the art of sound extraction and he playes a real appassionato. I heard many good Asian violnists play this concerto, but they seem not to understand that it is a very passionate piece and play it out of character.
A lot of student violinists learn this. Doesn't mean it's performed often, but what it does mean is that this piece probably will be in the repertory of violinists for a long time. So more people in the future will be able to play it, and thus it will never become forgotten or not played.
Raoul Tak You can listen to him play the Mendelsson E minor on the 29th this month at the Tel Aviv Museum. In general Mintz performs mostly in Israel and in Europe.
I did not understand the idea and phrasing of this Wieniawski concerto (because I mainly listened to students playing) until I listened to Shlomo's recital. Now I understand it perfectly well - Shlomo's expressive phrasing is just fantastic. There were some insignificant mistakes, glossing over some notes, but this is a live play by a human musician, not by a robot. Those minor mistakes do not mar the general impression and absolutely spectacular sound extraction, especially with the fourth finger. Not many violinists can make such a salient vibrato with their fourth finger. Most important, I can sense the spirit of Wieniawski as I listen to Shlomo performing it. And his staccato is exemplary.
if I could give this fantastic performance a million likes then I would.i did not realize that playing the violin was that easy.totally musically satisfying and amazing violin playing.why was mr. mintz not more famous?he is up there with all the other galamian students is he not?
Mintz is in my top 3. He is up there with other galamian students. But unfortunately, time and age is affecting his playing badly. Well people is still listening to him in concert because his tone is still beautiful at halls, but recordings and videos didnt do the justice. He never study with galamian but he did study with Ilona Feher(teacher of zukerman and ashkenasi) and Dorothy DeLay
I listen to this maybe once a month. This version specifically. the segment from 13:51 to 14:05 or so always gets me. That and the almost pornographic ending. What a performance.
RU-vid now becomes more and more nasty. Force RU-vid viewers to watch their lengthy ads with no skip or any control button. It's like 5 minutes or longer. Can't bear it any more.
This was the first concerto that I ever listened to. Before I watched this video, the only classical music that I listened to was solo piano...After 5 years of listening to concertos, this is still among the best I have heard and may be my favorite concert recording on youtube.
He plays in this time with very much fun and is very very good. I would say he plays this concerto so that I now can understand the great beauty of this piece. Thank you Shlomo Mintz.
Wow each note is perfect, not sloppy at all. they can all be heard and appreciated! It's so hard to listen to any other interpretation after listening to this one. His is just amazing!!! I know if you have heard others you would also understand what i'm saying D: it's just so unbelievable!!!
Shlomo is in my personal view the best player of Wieniawski concerto number 2. I have listened him many times and comparei with other violinists. He is superb! A new Heifetz!
Przepiękna, boska interpretacja, idealny dźwięk, technika, zakochałam się w tym skrzypku. Miałam okazję słyszeć go na żywo, niezwykła siła brzmienia, wypełnił dźwiękiem całą salę.
Splendid solo of Mr Mintz. Feel close to be back in the seventies when there were not that many talents around and one had to struggle to build up an international reputation. Bravo!
“ACH DU LIEBER, MEIN SCHATZ”!! “WITAM”! “JAK SIE MASZ”? What an unbelievably gorgeous violin concerto!!! Melody to make your ol’ heart soar right out of your body!! THIS is what the greatest of the greatest music is all about! I watch my tablet every late night & I had to “dig” on the internet to find this extroadinarily gorgeous concerto! WHY? It should be played EVERYWHERE! Beautiful performance, even though the video is so old - today is 2/26/2022. This violin concerto seems like it has been almost forgotten OR ignored!!! I almost forgot it! I’m in love again!! Haven’t heard this concerto in at least 2 or 3 DECADES! WOW! “They” say there are two kinds of people in this world - those who are POLISH & those who’d like to be!!! I’m not POLISH, but wouldn’t be ashamed to be! And I don’t believe it takes 3 Polish people to change a light bulb (1 to hold the bulb & 2 to turn the ladder!!!)! NO, I won’t say dat! My greatest “THANK YOU - “Dziekuje” - Mr. Henryk for “obeying GOD’s call in your life” & giving us such GORGEOUS MELODY to make our heart “swim in amazement & pleasure”!!! “DO WIDZENIA”!!!!! Oh, don’t forget the “ Hupaj Suipaj Polka” either!
I said to myself "what a wonderful world this is" when I listened to this performance. Wondeful and marvellous. Thanks to the God who is able to create those composers and performers.
Bar none, the best interpretation of the piece and superb technical abilities too. Bomsori Kim is also a talented young violinist but it's sad that the number of views for her interpretation has surpassed the views for this video on RU-vid; simply compare Mintz's up bow staccato to that of Veriko Tchumburidze (the lady who was voted even higher than Kim on the competition); Veriko wouldn't even come close to him in technical perfection. Also, I wish this video wasn't slightly out of sync with the audio. Would appreciate it if someone could upload the better version.
