In order to restrain Roxy's behaviour from an early age, her owner was advised to fit with a shock collar while she was still a puppy. @@mykookie8354 That's 100% not true. You have to know what you're doing or otherwise it can go steep downhill with dog education. I know people that own their dogs for many years now and have uncontrollable aggressive or untrained dogs. They do try to train their dogs though, tell them commands, when they're in pure rage, almost choke them with their collar, "punish" them verbally for actions they did minutes ago, etc. If a person never learned the skills of dog training, from where should he know how to do that?

@@petrescuework-difficultcas6581 Having the skills to train a dog is different then having the knowledge. If you are dedicated, then you will learn how to train them. You don't need to have a skill in training them, you just need to learn, and learning takes patience.

@@mykookie8354 you are so confused. The only thing stilwell brought is skillset, she is only doing something, she, the owner knows nothing, her next dog will be a disaster too. The owner is as it says it is, the owner. Only that. Patience will let the dog grow in any direction most probably a biter because it is biting dog breed.

+Minel Deniz Kalintas-Victoria is only a rare trainer where she keeps up with modern research and modifies her approach based on that. She even has a few episodes uploaded with commentary over how things have changed since the episode has aired and has she advises a slightly different approach to things. She has been adamant even more so than ever over the virtue and value of positive training. It really is the best way to go. Dogs, and people, are much more receptive to positivity rather than punishment-based training. Dogs are naturally born ready and wanting to please you anyway. They love you that much so you don't have to do much in order to correct them. Just a different approach is needed. One where both you and your dogs are left much happier and more fulfilled for it.

My dog was put on an “electric” collar without my knowing at a training program (when I saw it and was furious the guy swore to me it was totally different from a shock collar and “feels like just a little poke” and would press it over and over and over nonstop until she did what he told her), and he had it set to 50/100 and I tried it on myself on 6 and it HURT. Luckily my baby is the most loving, forgiving, happiest little girl in the whole world and doesn’t seem to have been affected. Those, choke, prong, and any other things like that should be illegal EVERYWHERE. And if pet stores actually cared about animals, they’d stop selling anyway.

I fully support you on this. My dog was with someone I knew who bought a shock collar without asking me and was intending to make him wear it. I told them to hold the collar, turned it up to it's highest setting and shocked the bejabers outta them, causing a nasty mark. They were upset. My response? "Good. And you wanted to put that on a young dog you don't own, had no permission whatsoever to do so, and would have probably kept it secret had I not found out. Lucky you. Throw it in the skip." They protested, saying it was expensive, and they would lose money throwing it away, so I threatened to make them wear it on its highest setting for a week if they didn't. They binned it. And not before I stomped it to pieces and watched them bin it. I despise choke chains too. I only have a collar on my dog to hold his tag. And he has a harness I walk him on. I'm going to get him a new collar from the brothers trust or PDSA when the lockdown ends.

Prong collars can be helpful, i knew a slightly older woman whose young labradoodle didnt get how to walk nicely which was his only behavioral problem. After one session during which the dog never showed distress using the stop and turn method when he pulled they turned the collar so that the prongs faced out and he walked much better on leash from then on with reinforcement sessions. Just doing stop and turn didnt work with him on a regular collar as he would just start pulling in the other direction

My high energy lab is a little on the wild side and I can see dogs don’t like it and when I see any sort of tension beginning I bring my dog to a different part of the park and after 10 minutes of relieasing energy he’s fine. Thank you, Victoria!! I also had a 'trainer' (Who made a BIG deal that SHE was a DOG TRAINER and did this for a LIVING so she knew what she was talking about!) tell me that I needed to put a shock collar on my SIX MONTH OLD PUPPY because she did not yet know how to come when she was called. (or rather, she did, but it was not reliable yet - and when we were walking her, it was just safer to keep her on lead than to risk it) We were in an off-leash area and yes, you do see people with the dogs on the leash still - for a variety of reasons. It's not their dog, the dog is still training, its a bit reactive and it's easier to keep it on leash until you're in a quieter area, etc. She saw us walking the main path, with our young puppy on leash, and made this huge deal that she did not want HER dog coming near ours because there was something wrong withour puppy that it was still on leash and she had put too much work into hers to have it 'disrupted'. When we told her there was nothing wrong with our puppy, that she was still learning and she wasn't terribly good with her recall yet, she firmly told us how she was a professional dog trainer and we needed to go get a shock collar immediately and put it on the puppy to teach it to behave. (This said quite aggressively - while said puppy was calmly sitting at my feet waiting for us to continue the walk. . .) I was so ticked and so upset by this that I refused to talk to the person any more. Thank God she was not a regular and I've never seen her since. We did not - of course - get a shock or ecollar of any sort and the puppy had now grown into a lovely dog who can not only be let off leash during walks, but tends to stick fairly close to me so I don't have to call her back a ton. All done WITHOUT force. Just lots of treats and games. Thank you thank you for confirming what I 'sensed' and putting words to the issue.

Love your comment ❤. I also met someone on a walk when my dog was young. She had 4 dogs with her that were just allowed to do what they wanted! She kept casting sideways glances at my girl who was just sat at my side watching her dogs fool around. She asked my dogs age, I told her six months. I almost had to pick her up off the floor! And again when we saw two horse riders heading our way. She had a rare old time getting her lot back just in time! My puppy never moved an inch! On our lessons out walking I always called her back in a sing-song voice, got down on one knee and spread my arms, she never failed to come bounding over! I brought my puppy up purely with kindness, fairness; and yes, I set boundaries, and not once was there a cross word between us! This woman was a so-called Dog "Trainer"(???!!!) 🤭🤭 I only learned that just as we parted our ways. I just quietly smiled to myself!! So there we are. Fancy calling herself a "Dog Trainer" to a stranger when she had such a hard time on her re-call!!! How embarrassing 😳

I call that stripped feet; it's caused by friction which basically rips the top layer of pad off in flaps. It's awful but they recover from it a lot faster than you would think. It's also why you never run a Dog on pavement unless their feet are extremely hardened. Packed dirt and cool sand are safe, turf is best for hard running because it provides traction and cushion without causing friction. (That was a lot of "ion's." I feel like Dr Seuss lol 😂)

well, its not common sense, really, if you have never owned a pet. she had no clue and put her trust into a so called expert. it might be obvious to you, but not to other people who have no idea of such things. misconceptions are everywhere as well. i grew up on a farm in a very small village with various animals. my bf on the other had is a real city person. he had never owned any animals whatsoever and had very limited experience with friends animals, if they had any. when we talked about adopting a cat, he asked me the most bizarre questions about cats, which were very obvious, and to be honest, quite alien sounding to me. this had taught me that i shouldnt judge others by my own standards or knowledge. i really do wish though that you would need a certificated license to adopt any dogs though.

It’s not that simple. Many dog training colleges train their trainers how to “properly” use shock collars. Im going into a six month training school and they give information on shock collars. Of course I’ll be opting out of that training. I know ppl with service dogs who use these collars. And ppl trick you into using them. They say it’s not “painful” it’s just “uncomfortable”. Some ppl even call them “tickle collars”. So when a trainer who is certified and went to a school to train dogs tells you that “ it won’t damage your puppy and it’s the same as a momma dog nipping a puppy to correct it” or that it is “natural” then I can see how this lady was led astray.

Dakota&Blessing ServiceTeam If you care about dogs and have knowledge that would help others train their dogs properly, why don’t you just explain why some collars aren’t bad instead of being patronizing and rude. Not everyone is born knowing something. If we educate each other, it helps clear things up. If you just insult people, call them uneducated, and assume that they have no knowledge, people aren’t going to want to associate themselves with someone who treats them poorly.

@@tobie874 it would be nice if we could fix it. It’s just like the pug. It used to be a really healthy breed but then people breed it and smushed the face in so it would be “cuter.” In reality it just gave all the dogs of that breed problematic health. I heard some breeders were trying to fix the pug though so maybe there’s hope for the bulldog too

It would help if people didn't breed dogs or cats to be like this in the first place. Pugs, french bulldogs and other short nose breeds (including cats) struggle to breathe so they often need an operation that costs £3000 to help them. The munchkin cat is the same. The short legs are a genetic disorder but people thought a cat with short stubby legs was cute so they continued to breed these poor cats with genetic disorders for the sake of money.. People that breed these animals to be this way, do not care about them. Same with doberman and rottweilers getting their tails cut off. 🤷‍♀️
