Yeah the milk is just regular milk. it's sealed in a tetra pack and stays fresh. You have to refrigerate it after you open it. It's more natural than the milk here in Canada actually.

American and European milk makers both pasteurize milk before selling it to consumers, but in Europe, the standard is UHT pasteurization, or ultra-high temperature pasteurization. That involves heating raw milk up to around 280 degrees Fahrenheit for a few seconds, killing all bacteria. Therefore making it last months and months of shelf life.

There is no codfish around Portugal or the Azores. The Portuguese used to sail all the way to Newfoundland and Greenland to catch the codfish. Because the journey was so long, the salted the fish. The Portuguese codfishing around Newfoundland was so huge that they even brought their own hospital ships along to Canada, tp treat wounded and sick fishermen. One of the hospital ships can be seen to this day in Viana do Castelo, in northern Portugal.

Bacalhau is the Portuguese word for dried and salted cod. Fresh cod is referred to as bacalhau fresco. You can soak dried cod in water, wine or other liquid and then cook it. Love it grilled, mixed with cream and spices and whipped into a mousse. It's like a salty cream cheese dip - delicious on toast or raw veggies!

Not unaffordable but higher than usual as this is in the islands and transport cost adds to it. That said people in the Azores eat well and you can live in a 2 minimum wage household. @minilinlife Месяц назад
@@miguelcoelho3877 UHT (Ultra-High Temperature) milk is indeed a form of pasteurization, but it's different from the traditional pasteurization methods used for what is commonly referred to as "fresh" milk. UHT milk is heated to a much higher temperature for a shorter period, which allows it to have a much longer shelf life without refrigeration compared to regular pasteurized milk. So, while it's technically pasteurized, it isn't considered "fresh" in the traditional sense. Fresh milk is usually pasteurized at lower temperatures and needs to be kept refrigerated. The milk in those cartons is UHT, not fresh pasteurized milk. 😊At least in Portugal when you have slow pasteurized milk (or leite fresco) it is described as pasteurized milk in the list of ingredients, different from UHT.
@miguelcoelho3877
@miguelcoelho3877 29 дней назад
@@minilinlife I know what the acronym UHT stands for, I don't need you to spell it out for my benefit. Or to lecture me about the differences between UHT and "regular" pasteurisation, for that matter! As someone born in Lisbon in the 1950s -- therefore more than a decade before milk started being sold in TetraPak cartons (initially they were triangular, not rectangular, as it is the norm today) and before the new standard in pasteurisation, UHT, had been introduced to the public (if I remember correctly, UHT only became the norm from the 1980s onwards) -- I remember well how milk used to be brought to one's regular household in glass bottles by your local milkman. Not just milk but yoghurt as well, in glass pots. So, you're not telling me anything I didn't know already! However, seeing that I haven't lived in Portugal since the early '80s (not for a full year, that is) I didn't know that one could still buy what you call "slow pasteurized milk (or leite fresco)" in the shops. Other than buying it directly from the farmer, I didn't think shops were allowed to sell milk other than UHT. Live and learn, I guess... Notwithstanding all of this, my initial intention was to correct the absolutely preposterous remark the author of this video had made regarding the milk in that supermarket in the Azores, not to be debating anyone concerning the definition of "UHT". Or how "fresh" that milk is or isn't. Once the milk is within its best-before date it is fresh, as far as I am concerned!

UHT is just a pasteurization method also known as ultrapasteurization. pasteurization is a process of heating to high temperature for a period of time the product, as it kills bacteria it sterilizes the milk allowing it to be stored outside the fridge. Ultrapasteurization is just them using even higher temperatures and even shorter amounts of time for that pasteurization. UHT process heats the milk for 2 to 5 seconds at 140ºC/284ºF Milk and eggs in portugal go through this process so they don't need to be kept on a fridge. So no need to use air quotes regarding the milk, it is still milk that process has nothing to do with dehidration and hidration.

Am portuguese, from the mainland, and thats so weird... having stuff in front cause its from Açores... some of that stuff is so turist trap items since isnt sold here in the mainland... The best beers are SuperBock and Crystal... sagres is considered a weak beer and only for those who dont know/care about good beer.

The reason you saw so many Azorean products on display is because Continente (the supermarket you visited) recently had a promotion featuring Azorean foods. The selection is not normally so extensive (I live in the Azores).

This is a false statement. Here in the Azores, we have limited access to organic (bio) food. For that reason, it is best to grow one's own produce.

Portugal is NOT the cheapest in Europe, but one of the expensive ones, by far, while the quality of housing and services is way below standard. Most eastern European countries are far cheaper, with lower salaries & pensions than Portugal. See Bulgaria, Romania, Albania, Serbia, Estonia, etc.
