When I got married some 20+ years ago, I already had a house and regular car,. I paid a dowry of $1500, which over several months, was returned to me in a surreptitious way. Thank God my Chinese wife was against this. We discussed that and understood that although cultural tradition it is somewhat akin to buying a person, kinda freaking me out. Of course we help her parents when needed but we made it clear that any money was for our growing family and not a transaction.

Something like this pertained in Southern Ireland, the eldest son would get the farm but the other siblings would leave and emigrate. Result a lot of male farmers but most of the females emigrated to the US and Britain where they often worked as nurses (I think at one stage the proportion of Irish nurses was very high in the NHS) leaving a lot of these farmers with no women to marry. It wasn't a dowry problem but more a factor that the women moved away.

Some issues with terminology - dowries (嫁妆）are what the bride's family provides when their daughter marries. What the groom's family provide is called the bride price （聘礼or彩礼）.

I've always found the idea of dowries so interesting. In western culture, the dowry usually came with the wife. The point was that the bride-to-be would have funds to furnish a house, but it was the groom's responsibility to provide a house.... and I'm talking super, super old days here. In my current country, western cultures don't practice it but african culture practice "labola" which is essentially a dowry to the bride-to-be's parents. The idea is to pay back the cost of raising the girl, sending her to school, etc. but recently the expectations have also been increasing. It's interesting because different cultures have different ways. It seems that our current path is going to lead to more arranged marriages worldwide as people are not naturally pairing up much anymore.

Not much different from the requirements women in US and EU have for men, to major difference being not 1 million yuan but 1 million euros or dollars.
