Russell Simons did not have a label before meeting Rick Rubin, he was running his management company called Rush productions, where he managed Curtis Blow, RUN-DMC, Houdini and others. When he met Rick Rubin, Rick had already started Def-Jam out of his Collage dorm, and he and Russell became partners and developed Def-Jam to become the mega label before Russell bought out Rick Rubin's interest in the partnership. Violator was not truly a record company but a management company, Chris and Mona Scott both use to work for Rush Management, which was being run at that time by Lyor Cohen. When Russell decided to shut down Rush Management, he let the staff individually start their own management companies and Chris and Mona worked together to run Violator records/management company together, and the artist they were assigned to at Rush management were allowed to go with Chris and Mona. Chris Lightly was not in competition with Def-Jam, all of the Hip-Hop label in NYC were in a networking circle and Russell and Lyor supported their protégés with what ever deals they received to get money, Chris was not looking to be an independent label, because the majors were the corporate bank for financing everything, why try to finance a label by yourself which cost million to run. Def-Jam was at it's height and actually number one Hip-Hop label during the late nineties early two thousands with DMX selling 5 million plus on each of his albums, They had Roc-A-Fella { Jay & Kanye }, they had Murder Inc., and successful independent artist signed directly to the label Like Meth, Redman, Ludacris, etc. Chris and Curtis did not get 4 billion on the Vitamin water deal, they did not own that company, they only had a small percentage of the company because of Curtis's { 50 Cent } % for the endorsement deal, Chris was the manager, and he only received a small percentage of Curtis money. The reason people like Jay Z always sell their companies is because no matter how successful you get in this business, its not guaranteed to last forever because of how fickle it is & how quickly things change. At one point Violator was managing Missy, 50, LL, Busta, Mariah, Fantasia at the peak of their careers in the mid 00s if Chris had sold half or all of it he would've got a lot of money but he held on & that's how he ended up going bankrupt. in 2012 all these artists I mentioned were past their prime so they weren't bringing in as much money as they used to, which means the percentage Chris was getting from managing them was getting smaller and smaller. This means he had to borrow and use his own money to keep the business running so this is why he ended up owing so much. The vitamin water deal was big but it wasn't as big as they made it seem, I remember reading 50 only made $40 mill from it which is a lot but not life changing for Lighty because he would only be making a percentage of that

He had one major financial problem around the 2010s time period. This problem was him owing the I.r.s 5 million dollars. Although, by the time of Chris's death he had sold one of his condos for 5 million dollars and paid the majority of that I.r.s debt off to where, at the time of his death, 300k was the remainder of the 5 million dollar debt. My point is, He was actually recovering from financial problems and His financials were coming out of the negatives and going back into the positives. Therefore money had nothing to do with his death
