We sail to Aitutaki in the Cook Islands when disaster strikes. Our buddy boat which is a 54ft Bavaria gets stuck on a reef after we were told that the channel entering the harbour had a depth of 3 meters...
SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. We found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are now sailing across the Pacific Ocean!!

Colin you are the most giving person I have had the privilege of getting to follow. You are always at the ready to help others, and you do it staying humble and kind all the time. More and more I am beginning to think you really need to be an engineer just to keep a sail boat free of trouble. You are a legend in your own time, and everyone will soon want to sail with you. Please stay safe.

Ms Socrates is the very definition of what one can do at ANY age, if you put your mind to it. The fact she is 80 and still cruising is one hella b ar to top for anyone. Her awards and records are epic as well. May the wind fill her sails and her boat carry her to her next destination safely. What an inspiration to all of us. And Colin and crew, your guys have set the bar high as well. You cvontribute a huge amount of time helping other sailors, to include Jeanne, helping her get her engine staarightened out shows what a big heart you have.

I’ve said it before but cruising seems to bring out the best in humanity and draws a certain caliber of people. You might be alone crossing oceans but you’re surrounded by people who consider you family. No matter the cultural barriers (which seem to disappear during difficult circumstances), cruisers consider other cruisers family. It’s amazing to see and one of the reasons I get hooked on channels like Colins. Even though he’s an awesome person, it seems most sailors are as well. I love seeing that side of people.

You guys really did a great job helping those two other boats out. That's one thing I enjoy about sailing my boat, is the chance to help people on other boats, or to have them help me! I've been doing high latitude sailing and boating for 35 years here in Alaska, so I've seen a lot of different situations develop over the years. Am wondering why someone would bring a 54' boat that draws 2.4 meters of water into that harbor in the first place. I know the harbormaster said 'Oh, there's 3 meters of water in the whole channel', but I mean, how many years ago was that?! It would have been smart to run someone in the dink with a lead line to get an actual real time reading of the channel's depth. Set the line to just shy of 3 meters, drag it slowly thru the channel, and if it bumps the bottom, you know there's not 3 meters of water depth. I had a centerboard sailboat for a few years that would go in 1.5 feet of water (just less than half a meter) and have beached it many times in certain locations around southeast Alaska, so I've got some experience with shallow draft situations. Either way, good work being a good mariner.

I visited Aitutaki in 1978 while singlehanding my Searunner 37 trimaran. Back then, the entrance was a natural weaving/snake-shaped route and only boats drawing less than 4.5 feet dare enter (no marina, just a cut in the coral reef; enough room for two, maybe three boats). The coral pass had a wicked current and it was full of sharks and huge groupers. Now Aitutaki has a man-made straight passage and an inner lagoon! Wow, what a huge improvement - if still too shallow. I got hired as a conservation diver for two months and made about forty scuba dives around the outer reef to check for Crown of Thorns damage (none). There were the remains of two old whaling vessels on the south side. The people were lovely! Truly a paradise, probably my favorite spot in the South Pacific. Thanks for letting me revisit!
