On use to work as a painter. It bugs how people are easy to criticize. Rich does finish carpentry and isn't a professional painter, so instead of criticizing him . People should give advise in a respectful manner. I work as a mason now and I do plumbing once in a while,I might not be the best but at least I'm not afraid to do the job nor is he. Good job man

Used our TC Pro for many hours and jobs, but when it stopped I was shocked at how the rubber service ports were made and how easily the Allen key stripped out the rubber on the service ports. Loved this gun until it got stopped up. Normally easy to clean up, but wish they had more solid screw. Oh. 26 of the manual says you can use oil based paints but does warn that static sparking is possible and recommends using a metal pail and/or grounding.

The shock has to do with the flash point of the product being sprayed. Below 100 you should be using the hot solvent Graco Handheld. Some oil based products with a flash point between 115-100 can cause a shock and it has to do with the solvent.

Great video...all the suggestions regarding build up of static electric charge is right on point and correct. As an industrial chemist we always considered static charge build up whenever organic solvents are moving through any pipe or piece of equipment. Everything must be grounded before starting any fluid transfer or, in this case, before using handheld sprayer. Using that sprayer in and enclosed room, with oil base paint, is a prime set up for a house destroying explosion if it should spark just when the vapor level reach critical concentrations. Your very very lucky you didn't finish that job with a bang! Another example of this static charge buildup is when they pull tanker trucks into gas stations to refill the underground tanks...they always attach ground wires to the truck and hoses before they transfer the fluids into the tanks. Great videos and keep up the great work!
@ralphvalkenhoff2887

I agree however, How would he have grounded himself? By touching a pipe? Connection with wire leading outside to a rebar pounded into the ground? And is it only effective during the transfer of liquid?

@@ralphvalkenhoff2887 the model he bought is for water based paint only! There is a more expensive grounded unit for spraying oil based paint and lacquers. It say on the box that you can cause a fire or explosion with oil based

It's a water based gun only. I have the ultra pro version which gives you a grounding cord . Far too much hassle so why bother using oil at all. These guns work but the graco quickshot is far better and if at all possible go for the GX 19 versions on batteries where you actually have some control. I'm a tradesman 30 years have sprayed vehicles before, and found the top version of there handheld , heavy ,noisy, messy, very little control but it has plenty of power and should be called a handheld, priming and touch up gun. That's all it is really.

YEP YOU SURE DID! I got the same gun. I just put a inquiry into Graco on 4/19 and they just replied with this following: "Steve, The material is alkyd based and contains some naphtha. These materials can cause static shock in the not solvent resistant handhelds. Usually if it says alkyd based it will contain a solvent that can cause shocks. I would avoid alkyd base and just make sure otherwise that it states it is non-flammable."

@markmurto
@markmurto 3 года назад
Usually with latex, just before you paint, you wet caulk with a very thin line of clear at the tape edge, and pull the tape while wet. With oil its tougher. You have to use sealing wax and wipe it off real good so it only seals the tape edge. Let it dry. Oil is very leaky. Wax is oil based and dried like oil. Wet caulk won't work with oil.

Actually oil based and solvent based material has a special gun called Ultra Max HH, the one you are using is the normal Ultra HH You need to check the manuals again
@mm-xk7pg
@mm-xk7pg 6 лет назад
It states right in the manual that there is the possiblity of user shocks...Graco ultra can only be used with latex and mineral spirits based products. There is an upgraded gun called the ultramax that can be used for hotter solvent based products. The ultramax is more expensive and comes with a grounding cord, it can be used to spray anything. He stated the paint he was using had been thinned by someone else, that someone else had probably thinned it with a hotter solvent causing the shocks.

Try using a raw union to reduce odor from paints that have stout fumes. It won’t eliminate the VOCs but it will take odor away much quicker and the onion doesn’t leave an odor behind. And yes, a grounded wire will take away the shock. Reader above/below me has sent you the link. Good channel. Love the content.

They have products out like the 3000 enamel from Farrell Calhoun that looks and cures smooth and hard exactly like oil but will not yellow over time and cleans up with water. Oil based enamel is useless in modern times, the only reason it should ever be used is when you're painting over oil. If you paint new material with oil you have no clue what you are doing or are an old head that is hard headed from the unnecessary fumes. You can paint a door with half 3000 and half oil and you will not be able to tell what is what after a week.

They make an air hose that has an internal ground built in. I know your using an airless sprayer so I don't know what the solution is but I'm sure Graco has seen this before. Its usually caused by temperature and humidity conditions.

It has to do with purity of the solvents used if a higher than 100 is shocking you. The TC Pro Plus is for Lacquer, MEK, acetone and all flammable products and WILL NOT SHOCK. The standard Pro Shot isn’t designed well for shooting oil. It’s shocking due to static build up. They say it can spray only mineral spirits based. But good luck finding any oil base paint that only has mineral spirits in it. Most oil base paints still have xylene and mek in them. As far as how much in them it takes to shock idk. I’ve had south west builders shock, PPG oil shock and ProClassic oil shock. The Pro Shot Fine Finish wont shock you. It uses different internal materials to help relegate the static build up.

If it's ungrounded, than the rate of flow throw the line can create static electricity to build up causing that effect. It actually creates a spark and that is what you're feeling. I shouldn't have to tell you what could happen if it decides to happen. Without being there to adjusted it I'd say bring it back and talk to a knowledge rep about adjusting the flow, also it could be a combination of that and the paint being to thin and it's causing static electricity. Either way take it back and get another one. It can be fixed so everyone will be whole. Good luck my man

Besides the cost of the gun compared to a brush how much time would it compare to the brush finish? Also brushing with waterbased is a lot more forgiving and can make it look good with less effort if you are not looking for a high gloss finish. I found you go one level down with Waterbased. For instance, it never looks as glossy but if you want a satin look then gloss will flatten off with one coat over an undercoat. If you want it matt then get a satin or semi gloss and it always looks flatter. Never has as much shine as oil based but easier to apply, more forgiving, better coverage, doesn't yellow in dark areas.

Do you ever paint trim with a 1st coat prior to installing, then finish with a 2nd coat and/or touch up after installation?

Great video, but for me in the UK I would love to know how long it was to clear the room, tape and sheet off the floor, wall and the final spray up? I would hazard a guess that a normal brush job by a skilled decorator would be just as quick as they wouldn't need to tape off the area and the room furniture could be lightly dust sheeted. Not a a criticism bud, just that we in the UK would probably do it differently.........and possibly less or more efficiently?

With that speed you don't need any sprayer, and probably you can finish a room - ceiling, walls, skirtings and the door in one and a half hour. You probably have shoulders and knees of steel.

How did you tape to the baseboard with out the paint bleeding through was there a big gap. In Australia there's never really a big gap it's usually flush to the ground

Thank you for all the videos you put out, always good! One question i bought graco handheld sprayer i hated it bc of the pulsing pattern it would create on what i was painting. Did you experience any with this model? Thanks!!

Unless you H and AVE to have a sprayed look those baseboards could be brushed a lot faster than all the taping and cleanup.

No comparison to mask and sprayed vs brushed. Having done the finish work in mega million dollar homes, only thing I'd do different, is undercoat. sand, vacuum and tack cloth.. before spraying a finish coat, even over pre-primed wood. Undercoating and final sand gives a look of perfection. I don't care how good someone is with a brush, there's no way to match the perfect lines from masked and sprayed.

I agree with most everybody.He was using a thinning agent the gun was not designed for.
