When the order came to start measuring the C-130 Hercules in preparation for an aircraft carrier landing and launch test, engineers at the Naval Air Test Center thought someone must be joking. With a wingspan of 132-feet, few could imagine that the C-130 would be able to operate off of a flight deck only 1,017-feet long and approximately 250-feet wide. But the Department of the United States Navy needed to find out the feasibility of landing large planes on carriers for resource transportation. As U.S. carrier fleets were being deployed around the world to increasingly more remote locations, the existing supply logistics relying on the Grumman C-1 Trader were proving insufficient. Configured for carrier operations, the small twin-engine C-1 had comparatively limited range and payload capacity. To solve the problem, the Navy assembled a team of shocked pilots and engineers to figure out how to land a colossal C-130 on the supercarrier USS Forrestal. Given the considerable uncertainty around the experiment, plans were made to toss the aircraft overboard with a crane should it prove unable to take off again...

@@codered5431 I know it's a joke, but the reason they even tried this with the C-130 is that she's known for her ridiculous short take off and landing (STOL) capabilities. Even the Electra (civilian version of the C-130) was a favorite of an Alaskan aione because it could get into/out of airfields that other aircraft of the time couldn't even think about.

Interesting to watch this since I was aboard the Forrestal for some of these tests. I particularly remember the C-130 landing, stopping, and then taking off again without backing up.

@@Enzoxvx Incorrect. Mike Patey did this in steep dive with his legendary Draco! (Videos here on YT) He needed a steep dive angle and low airspeed so 2 wing-suit skydivers could grab on to each wing. Outcome... Awesome!

Last year my girlfriend and I heard a loud rumble and we both ran outside to see what was happening.A C-130 was refueling two Blackhawk helicopters ,one from each wing.I live in northern middle Tennessee.It was a rare sight and one I will remember.

@@markpaul8178 We get C-130s (and C-17s) in and out of the local airport on a near-daily basis. Grant County International used to be an Air Force field, and there seems to be an Air Guard detachment there even now. It was also designated (but never used) as a Shuttle alternate landing field, has a small "boneyard", does flight training, and spent some time as the US flight test field for that prototype Mitsubishi Regional Jet.

It's a shame that History Channel ceased to be about History long ago. By the time they went after the 'reality' show genre they had jumped the shark and had no will to do serious shows. History Channel plays on the TV in the break room at work; everytime I see Giorgio Tsoukolas on Ancient Aliens I just want to puke my lunch. I miss the old History and Discovery and Discovery Wings channels.

I flew on 148798 in 1979-80 as a loadmaster when she was back in service with VMGR-252. She was a legend in the squadron. But my favorite was 148896...soft spot in my head and heart. Never underestimate the C-130!

The 101st Airborne Division was jumping out of C130's at Ft Campbell, Kentucky in 1957, probably one of the very best aircraft at that time, we even jumped out of C119, C123, C47 and the H34 Helicopter some where between 1957 and 1960.

40 knot winds probably helped if they aimed the carrier into the wind. Which I am sure they did. The C-130 could then land 40 knots slower with the same lift produced by the wings. EDIT: The one witness said when it landed the carrier had 40 to 50 knot winds hitting the nose, so yes they were sailing into the wind.

All modern aircraft carriers can push 32+ knots of wind across the flight deck even in zero wind conditions with the power of their main propulsion systems alone.

Having served in the Marine Corps Air Wing and on a carrier when I first learned about the C-130 landing on a carrier it was surprising. I watched many different types of craft coming in onboard a carrier. It’s pretty remarkable that they did this with a C-130. But it’s an amazing craft and the aviators who fly them are very capable pilots. It’s pretty cool that they did this. I see in the comments that people talk about simulators and I laugh. It’s not the same. Doing amazing things takes courage and ability. Simulators are risk free. The C-130 landed because the pilot had huge balls of steel and the drag alone was what contributed to it stopping in time. Simulators lol.

Same thing the old guard NASCAR drivers said about iRacing when it became populat amongst the young, up and coming drivers. Now those young guns have taken over the sport partially becuase they don't discount the advantages spending time in a simulator can provide. Definitely not a replacement for IRL experience but an excellent training tool that sholuldn't be "laughed" at.

IIRC, they weren't regular C130 pilots either. I read they couldn't get any air force pilots to do it, so a couple of Navy pilots did conversion training to fly the C130.

@@No1sonuk The air force played no role whatsoever even to turn down the assignment. The Navy specifically wanted carrier qual'd pilots. The plane belonged to the Marine Corps but the Marine KC-130 pilots didn't have extensive experience trapping on the boat.

In July 1967 off the coast of Viet Nam, the Forrestal had a serious fire on the flight deck. 134 sailors died and about 160 were injured. I was a COMSEC operator on Guam copying the radio traffic from the Forrestal. "Zippo" and "forrest fire" are used by some about the fire. Things were really bad when the Forrestal communicated with the USS Repose, a Navy hospital ship in Danang harbor asking how many beds were available. The Repose replied 150; the Forrestal responded “that isn't enough!” That was a terrible day for the Navy. Please forget about the USS Zippo and USS Forrest Fire terms. Navy Chief Warrant Officer (RET).

It's not that big of a deal honestly. The pilots train first, iron out the problems, then do it for real. They calculate and fly by the numbers. If they don't like something they abort and go around, etc. But yeah it's still pretty sketchy!

Wow..... As a Navy vet (AM3 VAW 116) that was on the flight deck crew. I can tell you that am in awe of this. A c130 with no hook! Those were some of the greatest naval aviators to ever live.

We brought OV-10 Broncos over Atlantic for PG ops. Launched them off 'Super Kitty Hawk Class' to fly on thru Europe. They kinda looked like B-25's taking off and disappearing over the ocean.(No catapult)

By the time this got declassified, I was in the Air Force (Early 70's). The Commander held a monthly meeting and usually showed a short info film prior to his "talk". He told us not to laugh when we saw the film. People started chuckling as we watched the C-130 approach the carrier. It then landed on the carrier. After that, you could have heard a pin drop in the room. The base I was stationed at was Little Rock AFB. It was a huge C-130 base. I did avionics repair on the C-130's and didn't think you could do that! It wasn't exactly empty either. I love watching this historic event. It's no wonder the pilot got the Air Medal for this! (Should have got it with brass balls clusters)

"It's no wonder the pilot got the Air Medal for this!" Flatley was awarded the DFC. Stovall and Brennan were awarded Air Medals. Sieve was eventually awarded an Air Medal in 2004.

Wow- that was a great video! As a Navy C-130 FE, I knew they landed a Herc on the Forrestal, but didn’t know how many times they did it successfully. That’s awesome- great job!

I absolutely love the “Dark” family of channels! Mainly Dark Docs & Dark Skies bc 90% of what they post are historic military documentaries and that’s what I love especially the period starting with WW2 & up to the mid-late 80’s when they did all sorts of crazy tests and instead of doing those tests on a computer like they would today they couldn’t back then so these actually had to be carried out and like this 1 here regularly ended up with a successful test and the people involved going down in history! It’s crazy at 7:33 to see the Forrestal’s deck 100% cleared. It’s almost like it was going back out for her sea fairing trials. I’m curious if sometime in the future we will ever a see a time when the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy gets an opportunity at a carrier landing & take off? I would imagine that would have to be a new carrier built specifically around the C-5 to accompany her wingspan along with a new launching and arresting system to both push her big ass off the deck and catch her when she touches down!

5:27 As far as not being able to find a C-130 crew to land on the deck ... B.S.!. The Navy never intended for pilots with no carrier landing experience to pilot this experiment. They specified carrier qualified pilots from the beginning, as only makes sense. Hence, fighter pilots with multiple hundreds of carrier landings under their belts.

The trick was they needed carrier pilots with experience in larger multi engine planes. It was an odd mix. I think their selection metric was probably more “number of successful carrier landings” than anything else. It was easier to teach a fighter pilot to fly a C-130 than it was to teach a C-130 pilot to land on a carrier. The Herc is legendarily easy to fly, whereas Carrier landings remain the hardest, most harrowing task in aviation.

Amazing story. Talk about bravery, all my respect to the flight crew and the pilots. The back story at the end was icing on the cake plus the picture of the airframe in storage. Proud to be a war veteran and an American, our country IS the most powerful and free place in the entire planet all because of the men and women who live within it.

USS Zippo My dad witnessed this landing and was onboard when a fire burned below decks for 9 days, reaching the compartment next to the magazine; which housed, among other things, a contingent of Mk 7 bombs.

@@MickeyD2012 It was called the "Forest fire" because of the terrible accident that occurred during the launch of an Alpha strike off the coast of Vietnam. An airman using a starter cart cooked off a missile that slammed into an A-1 that was fully loaded with fuel, 500 pound bombs, and a pilot. The resulting explosions and fire killed over 60 crewmen and badly wounded over 300 more.

Mine too! Actually was an F-16 instructor for over 20 years but cross-trained in a few other aircraft including the C-130 the last few years of his career. Retired just last year!

Haha, that's awesome for your father though, being a test pilot is hard and challenging and you have to be smart to convey things to the engineers.

I have crawled around that plane before behind the museum maintenance facility at NAS Pensacola. I was volunteering at museum maintenance while waiting to be "classed up" for aircrew training. Had no idea what it had done when I walked up to it. Ended up a KC-130J Loadmaster, so maybe that was the "moment" for me.

The pilots name is James H. Flatley III, he is the son of James H. Flatley Jr. How do I know this? Twice, I was his driver for the Change of Command ceremony for the USS Flatley (FFG-21) the ship named for his father, the ship I served on as an ET from 1987 to 1991. I didn't know about this back then, and since becoming a pilot myself, I wish I did. He was very nice, sitting in front with me, while his mom and wife sat in the back, cruising down the pier, headlights on, two stars flying on the hood. Actually asked for me the second time around. And since all of you are watching/reading this, look up VADM Flatley and see what he did during his Naval career. USS Flatley (FFG-21), The Flatdog, Have Courage, Call Sign NJHF. Still serving after 40 years in the Turkish Navy as TCG Gemlik (F 492) . ET2 Spowart (ret) AKA Sprout

I've always heard such great things about the C-130. This video tends to confirm what a great aircraft it is. All credit to the crew, but you have to respect the aircraft that has this kind of flexibility.

Just because the plane is large, does not mean that it's landing or takeoff distance would be any different than a smaller plane... I'm pretty sure that the people put in charge of the task didn't doubt if it could be done and just set about figuring out the details and optimizations needed.

Considering no C-130 crews wanted to be a part of the tests, I think it's safe to there was doubt. But maybe those uneducated navy pilots (I'm being sarcastic) were afraid some terrible accident might occur n they didnt wanna risk it. The current record for largest and heaviest plane landed on a carrier happened during these tests. That's pretty impressive considering it happened over 40 years ago. Maybe you're saying that some people had complete faith that it was possible to land a c-130 on a carrier though. If that is what you're saying, I think itd be worth thinking about how much money and time would go into just planning something like this. Not to mention that actually implementing it into regular operations would mean that those in charge would have to be nearly 100% certain that nothing would go wrong in the future either. Not trying to sound like I'm smart or that youre thought is dumb or anything like that. Just saying that I think you might be underestimating how complicated a monotonous task like resupplying a carrier can be

The weight of the plane does play a role in the required distance to land or take off, the more weight you have to accelerate the more energy is needed, the same goes for landing/stopping. Of course you have bigger engines and larger brakes on a larger plane, but the power to weight ratio is way higher on a fighter jet than a cargo plane.

You're right. Depends on many other things: Thrust to weight ratio; wing surface area to weight ratio; and many other things. So, a larger aircraft with all the SAME ratios as the smaller plane will indeed make landing and takeoff runs that are proportionately larger than the smaller aircraft.

I remember Ol' Zippy. Heard the horror stories from a photographer's mate assigned to that investigation. Spent one shore duty at VC-3 NAS North Island in the early 1970's which were providing target drones for training and fleet operations. Our two C-130A's were equipped as airborne launch platforms. MQM and BQM pilotless R.C. models that could exceed the sound barrier. The old girls were quirky in their old age. Our assistant maintenance officer was forever looking for parts at the bone yard. He told us the story about putting JATO on a Hercules and was a witness to these carrier operations.

The North American Aviation RA-5 was in extensive use in photo-recon det. service with carriers of TF-77 on "YANKEE STATION" during Vietnam war. Large "Bird" - don't remember wingspan, but comparable in size to A3. Heavy & fast too.

The pilot, James H. Flatley, was the skipper of an F-4 Phantom squadron later in his career. The squadron was VF-31. I was assigned to that squadron and Commander (at the time) Flatley was my skipper. One hell of a fine officer, one hell of a fine man!

Either way, the ads are a little OTT considering the length of videos- I'm comparing to other vaguely similar channels I watch like Mark Felton, Curious Droid, Zepherus, Mustard, etc. Not expecting everyone to be like Drachinifel and have 0 ads while seemingly putting more work into his channel than anyone...crazy man (and a legend).

Such an awesome airframe. I was honored to hitch a ride on the Blue Angels' C-130 Fat Albert before the Wings Over Houston Airshow about 10 or so years ago. They put on a great show for us and we even briefly experienced Zero-G and they did a really aggressively angled short-field landing (which was part of the demo for the airshow also). Definitely was regretting attending a Tequila Tasting the night before although I kept it together (barely).

After the USS Forrestal fires, everybody on board was taught to fight fires and qualified through a school. All Navy fuels now must have minimum flash point of 140 deg F.

DCPQS. And BTW, that' s 140 deg F or MORE. Also explosives (bomb innards) less temp sensitive were developed. Longer "cook-off" times.

Damage Control Personal Qualification Standards. Ca. 1970 - 1974, every crew member had to carry an up to date DCPQS card before being allowed to leave their ship. Or we got no liberty or leave. Firefighting schools were taught in "real world" conditions. Since I was stationed in an air wing assignment (Attack Squadron 147) the firefighting training was recurring at 90 to 120 day intervals.
