"I hate you, I hate you, I hate you....and yet I find you strangely attractive." "Of course you do. Druish princess are often attracted to money and power and I have both."
@@valiantloony8336 correct! Mr Lucas allowed the use of Star Wars “like” properties but he forbade any merchandise as it might cut into his profits. This is why Yogurt shows off his merchandise collection and the action figures Dark Helmet plays with. It’s a great comic rib tickler to Lucas. Fun fact, one of Yogurts items is actually a transformers color book.
On the property we had a huge dirt mound that was later to become the foundation for a house. This mound instantly became Tatooine. Time wore on and the dirt began smelling kinda funky, but we couldn't figure it out. One day my brother and I were busy defeating The Empire when one of our cats crept up dug a hole , and proceeded to take a leisurely dump while watching us play with that bemused "Hey what's up guys? You too?" look on it's face. We abandoned Tatooine and went looking for Endor. True story.
Sticker sheets would have been a marketing department’s dream.. “You mean we’ll have kids hassling their parents for exactly the same toy FIVE times???”
When I was a kid I got two X-Wing Luke figures and penned a black mustache on one so Luke and Biggs could adventure together. Always bummed me out that they made figures of characters that appeared for literally seconds, but never gave us a Tatooine Biggs.
We only saw Biggs in the trench run, in actual release. Until the reunion on Yavin was added for a subsequent addition. As far as can be discerned, Luke telling Biggs about the fight he saw isn't cannon.
@@toddnolastname4485 Yes, but I had some kids' picture book that had images of scenes that were cut from the film resulting in some odd confusion decades later. I also had the trading cards which also had some of those removed scenes. Years later people would insist they saw a version of the film with those scenes in it. Nope.
@@cryogeneric the way i see it...it was one of the there first big models...if it came with a seperate R2 then the one you already had would be wasted....and if it didnt you WOULD have to get one to make it complete.
@@DougZbikowski I don't recall mine falling off, they were on there pretty good on mine. I would have liked more bombs. My mom wasn't happy when she found my "home made" bombs. I had gone in the medicine cabinet and emptied out some capsules from Tylenol or something 😂
I had one of those and wore it out. It got to the point that the wings no longer held up so I took the cotton ends off of Q-Tips and placed them in the holes that are inside the wings. Pretty smart for a 4-year-old to improvise, if you ask me.
"The Last Jedi" might have been forgivable had Luke shown up at the battle of Crait in his X-Wing..."Red 5 reporting in". I'm calling it the biggest whiff in cinematic history.
If Kenner had more sense, they would have included a selection of stripes so you can choose whose X-Wing it is. It would also encourage kids to buy more than one so that they can have different stripes on each. Luke in X-Wing pilot gear was the second ever figure I got (the first was Boba Fett), but as soon as I got a selection of other Luke's, that figure became either Dack or Wedge.
To be fair, the original packaging only read "X-wIng Fighter". It was never specifically stated that this was Luke's own Red-5. The inclusion of R2-D2 implies that it was Luke's X-wing, but droid copilots are as interchangeable as the pilot. Interestingly, the R2-D2 figure is seen sitting next to th X-wing on the box picture for The Empire Strikes Back release of the X-wing toy. Is this another Kenner gaffe, or evidence that the droid permanently fixed to the X-wing is not R2?
lolol! "One two three, three stripes! It's not five like in the movie! Red five, five stripes! Red? Five? Five red stripes? One, two three: Three stripes! Who has three stripes?? Red three!" Woah, woah! I'm not that quick at math! You're gonna have to slow down!! 🤣
Kenner should have also allowed for a detachable droud too. The R2 figure with its hollow interior would have been the perfect connection area for a protruding rod. Just imagine them both connecting together, pressing R2s head, to open or close the wings.
I bought some tin lunch boxes to store Star Wars figures too. Brings me back to those days when I was kid and I had my action figures in a yellow plastic Fisher-Price doctor suitcase and my special favorite figures were in a 8-Track pleather carry case.
Hundreds of times viewing the film and never once over the last 40+ years did I realize that the striping on the s-foils had any real significance! I also never thought about the dark bits under the helmet being the visor instead of a bad dye-job. Your "fuel pump" droid is actually a medical droid though... Absolutely LOVED watching you play with your toys ("I can fly now!"). Thanks for the post.
I always figured something was wrong with the figure due to the black/brown hair. Figured Mr. Chew at the toy plant didn't get paid on time. Did not know about the red stripes on the various X-Wings denoting the call sign! Learned something new!
Out of all of the little secrets there are to find about toys, this is my very favorite discovery! I had to save this one on my “Best of the Best” queue
Unfortunately when we eventually got a Biggs Darklighter figure it was the Power of the Force one which was so bulked up and super muscular that there is no way that he could fit into the X-Wing Fighter.
1st two minutes...the REAL action figure show. Fun stuff. Bonus last 30 seconds of vid. I think this would be a funny "continuing adventure series" where you impromptu take a pile of random figures and do some play, then continue next week. THUMBS UP!
Never noticed the part about the stripes - going to have to re-watch ANH now. I had this back in the 70's. We didn't care about detail back then because we knew that the difference between the X-Wing in the movie (and the lunchbox, and the posters, and T-Shirt, and about anywhere else you could find a picture of an X-Wing) was going to be a big one. If you wanted an accurate looking X-Wing, you built a model of one (MRC had a snap-tite version for RotJ), or you waited until the SW resurgence in the 1990's and got one of teh toy X-wings they made then. I also had the Luke X-wing figure - since most people had (or had seen) the Luke Tatooine figure, it was clear that that that wasn't his hair poking out the helmet.
I believe in the theatrical version, the X-Wings all had the same number of stirpes. In the special editions, Lucas fixed that and gave each ship its own number of stirpes.
Waaaaah! All these years and I NEVER noticed about the stripes matching up with the call sign! Thanks to you Junkman I will be now able to smugly add this fact when I’m watching Star Wars with people as if I knew all along!
The Star Wars Parody WebComic, "Blue Milk Special", has Biggs Darklighter surviving & going off on adventures. Due to miscommunication with George, he thinks he is the hero & always shows up too early or too late to save Luke. (He even got to swing out of the Rancor pit with Oohla the Twi'Lek.)
It was something I noticed, but it never bothered me. Of course X-wing Luke was always repurposed as Wedge. ( I got the ROTJ trading card set and one of the cards explained he survived all three movies, so who better)
When I was a kid I always wondered why my x-wing Luke had dark brown, parted bangs. Wasn't until I started collecting years later that I found out it was his visor.
You reminded me about the time I was at Chris Leininger's house, opened his closet door, found a model X-Wing fighter and tossed it like a glider. It hit the wall and broke. It was worse because Chris's mom was also my second grade teacher. I felt really bad about that because it wasn't my intent to break it.
Lol no kid back in the day ever knew that! Heck i just learned that myself and I’m ... young at heart like you! Lol ! I hated the sounds they all made! I stopped putting batteries in them and made my replica laser sound with my mouth! Almost as real as they were on film! Great video sir!
Dark Helmet: [Helmet doll] Now, Princess Vespa, at last we are alone! Dark Helmet: [Vespa Doll] No, no, I hate you, I hate you, I hate you, leave me alone! And yet, I find you strangely attractive. Dark Helmet: [Helmet doll] Of course you do. Druish princesses are often attracted to money, and power, and I have both, and you know it! Dark Helmet: [Vespa doll] No, I hate you, leave me alone! Dark Helmet: [Helmet doll] No, kiss me! Dark Helmet: [Vespa doll] No, no, yes. Dark Helmet: [Helmet doll] No. Dark Helmet: [Vespa doll] Oh, ah, ah, ah, ah, oh, ohh... ohhhh, your helmet is so big.
The screen shot of the movie you use of Red 3 is actually Red 2 (the same X-wing on your lunch box) you can tell by the big white patch on left the engine, and the 2 stripes on the wings ;) Red 3 can be seen doing a barrel roll at the beginning of the attack on the death star right before the shot of the tower shooting at two x-wings.
I didn't like the battle damage stickers either. They got plenty damaged just from playing with them! Instead of letting them collect dust, The JUNKMAN plays with his toys! That's what they were made for!!! Respect
LOL, this video was so funny and entertaining yet also informative and helpful. I did notice the red stripes being only 3 but as a kid, I just figured the toy company couldn't fit 5 stripes on at the time. By the time Return Of The Jedi came out and I was able to buy a second Luke in X-Wing pilot gear action figure I pained a mustache on Luke and called it Biggs. I was so happy to see years later that Biggs was made into an action figure for me to add to my Star Wars collection. The downside, I found out my homemade Biggs woulda been worth some good money in today's market if I left it as Luke. Oh well, I wasn't into collecting action figures for their later value back in 1983. I collected them for the fun.
I'm more concerned as to what went wrong in FX-7's career that he's been demoted from medical duties to refuelling...'5 years of medical training for this!'
The only thing that I noticed as a kid is that my X-Wing didn't have a light or sound. Even tough it said so, in Dutch (!), on the back of the "12 back". Grrrrrrr. Thanks Palitoy/Clipper.
I used to just make believe it was an early version of an X Wing designed from the Z-95 , just went with it 🔥😂, & early R2 unit was built into the ship Eventually, better models came out
I noticed the stripe details when I got it on DVD and thought it was just missing the other stripes due to damage. As for the Kenner version, I figured since the toy wasn't proportional to the real model, I assumed there wasn't enough space for the extra two stripes to make it look symmetrical and didn't think anything else of it, but the model kit I built was proportional and had five stripes; I don't remember if the model had any other stripe configurations, that was about 40 years ago. I noticed when watching the movie the callsigns go Red Leader (Red 1) up to Red 11 and skip Red 8 but didn't see any more than five stripes on any X-Wing and I did see a one-stripe and three-stripe also. I'm assuming the remaining space for one or two more stripes would be added to the other stripes before moving to the other blank area within that decal area for more stripes.
Your point about the three stripes was interesting. Even the Estes model rocket version(both the D engine and standard engine version) only had three stripes.
Very entertaining. I love the Star Wars lunch box. I have the same one that my mother bought for me when I was a child of six years old - if I remember correctly. It may have been 1979 - when I was five. Either way it's still in mostly very good condition with the original thermos that came with it. This is when Thermos brand made lunch boxes. You'd be hard pressed to find this today without spending a lot of money. I too had the gray one and yes, I too hated the fake R2 unit that never had any detail and was not removable as Wylde Bill below has said. No argument there! I also noticed the Red 3 markings. God forbid should they spend any money making an truly accurate X-wing fighter! Thank you for sharing this with the rest of us.
Yeah it was never made obvious that the call signs matched up with markings to indicate squad members, at least for me, until new release lego x wings last 24 months
Fun video. One thing about the 70s and early 80s was that attention to detail by toy companies was not a big deal back then. They didn't take any of it too seriously, resulting in all the odd details we all hyper-examine for entertainment today. I was just happy to have an X-Wing and the "Death Star" that odd playset that was like a tiny slice of the sphere. Some kid stole my trash compactor monster, though. I finally got another one at a garage sale years later. The trash compactor came with a pile of oblong foam pieces to simulate garbage. I wonder if anyone has any of the original foam bits or if they have devolved into unrecognizable globs by now?
Dun dun dun. It’s X-Wing Fighter, new from Kenner’s Star Wars collection. Figures sold separately, you have to put it together. “X-Wing prepare for take-off, ambush the Empire!” X-Wing has retractable s-foils and working lights and sounds. X-Wing Fighter, Luke X-Wing Pilot figure sold separately. New from Kenner.
I still have my x-wing. I lost the cannons though because I taped them to two toilet paper rolls to make the Cygnus sentry laser pistols from Black Hole. The best thing about those Kenner ships was the buzzing noise and LED light. Hasbro is too snobby to redo them like that which is just them throwing away money, if you ask me
Back in the day nobody would gave any attention to this, the kids wanted to play with the Xwing toy and that was that.Nowadays we as grown ups can nitpick almost everything, like for instance my super 7 toxic crusader is detailed from the movie but also based in the cartoon show for instance and stuff! Stuff that the companies those years might care because they referring also to bigger ages as well, but back then even the companies didn't do for the obvious reason of selling the product first asked questions much later! 😅 This is good to know and learn from you even though i am a fan,i was never go that deep to search for stuff like that except some other stuff i also like.I consider the star wars lore really deep which i never dig up so much to check the differences here and there to tell you the truth! But i thank you for making this video showing us around kenner's mishaps in details this is really informative!
I wish I had the original C-Wing with just the Star Wars branding. Most of my vehicle toys ate from the Empire Strikes Back boxed era. I have the X-Wing. But mine came with the battle damage stickers. I should have left them off so that it looked just like the more plain original X-Wing. But back then I was just a kid who wanted to play with the toys.
I paused the review, so don't hate on me y'all. That firsr minute and a half was a sobering reminder of how much I used to enjoy my figures and ship. Am going to try and re-create this nostalgia w/Legacy Falcon and my prized 3.75" Vintage collection figures this week! (and you're welcome for this unsolicited testimonial.)
