There's nothing to be outraged about. They enjoy what they are, they like black phenotype, they are suspicious and feel detatched by other African countries or general African identity. This is absolutely the norm. The Africaness comes from the colonizers gaze, an outside perspective. Actually the less brainwashed Africans are the ones that don't see themselves just like their western conquerors saw them , "just black"

When Carla talk like that,she needs to be clear. She is a group of them. Even Caboverdiano coming from outside are complaining about those people. After our independencia in 1975 , from Portugues colony we were 5 countries.4 of us started getting more envolved with another African country flags, dresses, pictures. Started teaching at school things from Africa. Cabo verde was not doing it. Or if they did it was very few. We can see now the result those people are very confused they do not know what they are , they do not know theAfrican geography too .Even those are dark skin ,they get a lot of descimination from light skin. They have lot of problem about skin color. It is terrible. I like Cabo Verde Government they are working very well to compare with another 4 countries.

A black person should not be determined by the colour of the skin but by the true knowledge of his or her black history. Throughout history to date black people have made this mistake of associating blackness to skin colour and it has cost them dearly. It's through true history(not the compromised one we are taught everywhere) that a black person truly and unapologetically claim to be black. That's where the, Identity, self-esteem and belief in themselves come.
@elleanna5869
@elleanna5869 5 дней назад
@@kevinmax25 ok but if you know your culture you claim your culture, not your skin tone as a identity. There's no such thing as colour as ONE culture. No "white" no "Yellow" no "black". These are western colonialism boxes and expired soon . Even colonizers had to deal with wholly different identities and histories among same skin tone. Same thing of other continents, what a surprise 🙄

@@blackmagic6 I believe that the reason for the few those that may not consider themselves as Africans is because CV is left out a lot when people talk about Africa. Sometimes in maps CV is not even shown. If it wasn’t for AFCON the soccer tournament, CV wouldn’t be known as it is now. A lot of CV’s don’t even know their own history. I just went to a CV museum in Rhode Island, & i found out that CV was the first Africans to land in the USA. Many people including myself didn’t know this. The media's portrayal of Africa as a poor or desolate continent mirrors their depiction of black Americans in the media. This representation is not only unimpressive but also contributes to a state of denial among black individuals, shaped by the system designed by Europeans. It's absurd that someone can print papers as a currency in exchange for raw natural minerals like gold or diamonds from other countries. This is the core of the problem! They live in Africa and yet see themselves as better than others on the same continent because the Europeans decided to entrap them in a different mindset. Turning brothers against each other is a problem for us as a people.

I do not deny that rascism exist in the West. But we of other cultures also need to look closely at our prejudice towards even ourselves before we accuse others. This is very pedestrian to say the least. Comparing common human vagaries to a structured system of hate that has eliminated millions in the world is really disheartening and a total lack of understanding of the meaning of racism. It shows the little you really know. There will always be wranglings within humans but a structured system of hate that regarded others as semi - humans shouldn't be compared with normal human squabbles, because they are not. In all the cultural and ethnic differences, the only race that came up with a structured system of hate was the white race. And that's what we are still suffering from today. The residue of hate they left behind during slavery that mopped into colonialism is still hurting everybody today.

Listen, I’m a Gen X who was brought up in a (San Vicente)Cape Verdean household. Let me tell you, growing up in Senegal W Africa, every body I knew despised “mainland Africans” and liked to call themselves Portuguese. You have to realize, Cape Verde was one of the last African countries to gain its independence (in 1975, not too long ago in retrospect). And Cape Verde until not too long ago, had a flag that affiliated w/the African colors. But then, they decided that they would rather ally w/the European colors. So that tells you everything. My family vehemently forbade us girls to date “those black ppl”. There is a strong push to “whiten” the race. And anybody in this thread who tells you otherwise is lying. Cape Verdeans are sell outs. Period!

Cape Verdeans are considered Creole people due to the unique historical and cultural processes that shaped our identity. The term "Creole" refers to a group of people who emerged from the mixing of different ethnic and cultural groups, primarily during the colonial period. Over time, there was significant intermarriage and cultural blending between the Portuguese settlers and the African slaves. This mixing of European and African ancestry is a key characteristic of Creole identity. • Language: Cape Verdean Creole, a Portuguese-based creole language, emerged as the lingua franca of the islands. It combines elements of Portuguese with African languages, reflecting the mixed heritage of the population. • Traditions and Practices: Cape Verdean culture incorporates aspects of both Portuguese and African traditions, evident in music, dance, cuisine, and religious practices. For instance, the morna music genre blends African rhythms with Portuguese melodies. Creole Identity: Cape Verdeans identify ourselves as a distinct Creole people, recognizing our mixed ancestry and unique cultural heritage. This identity is celebrated and maintained through language, traditions, and community practices • Colonial Influence: During colonial rule, the Portuguese often classified mixed-race populations as "Creole," distinguishing them from both the European settlers and the African slaves. This classification influenced how we viewed ourselves and our place in society. • Post-Independence: Since gaining independence from Portugal in 1975, Cape Verde has embraced its Creole identity as a symbol of national unity and cultural pride. • Diaspora: The Cape Verdean diaspora, spread across various countries, continues to embrace and promote our Creole identity, further reinforcing the notion of being a Creole people. WE ARE PROUD CAPE VERDEANS/CREOLE, WE LOVE THE ISLAND, THE PEOPLE , THE LANGUAGE, THE CULTURE.

First of all thank you for highlighting Cape Verde and their mindset when it comes to social interactions and views ..... especially with people of African descent. listening to their point of view, I find it extremely sad that they are conflicted and in some ways delusional about who they are. The ones you interviewed are clearly African. I found it ironic that one woman referred to Africans as being "black" but she was darker than Willie. I'm hearing parallels with the Cape Verdean mindset to that of many Brazilians, who were also enslaved and colonised by the Portuguese, and the way they feel about themselves. When it comes to slavery, colonisation, exploitation and racism, the Portuguese have a lot to answer for. SMDH.

Cape verdeans are not your race, they are mixed race and as mixed race have the right to choose between one of the sides (Europe, Africa) or even both. And this choice is none of your business, the people from Capeverde choose for themselves. That is what is called freedom

Remember the Cape Verdean rhythm and blues group Tavares.They were very good and sounded just like a traditional Black American group. They were hot in the 1980s.

Evora is the best.. Good to know that a lot of people appreciate her work. I remember listening a lot of her songs while living in China about a decade ago... Sweet memories

The perception of various black cultures across the globe in relation to other black cultures is interesting. Some people only know what they see online or in the media as opposed to having an actual experience. As far as dating, as an African American or black American, I’ve dated or engaged with black American men, West Indian and men from different west African countries. Based on experiences, I have a preference, but I have allowed actual experiences shape my thoughts. Not heresy. But people will always have preconceived notions and stereotypes. Life isn’t IG and TikTok

@23:20 There's a similarity between that word manjako & Akata. The word literally is name of a tribe but it has been turned into a slur the same way Akata meaning Panther has been turned into a slur..it funny how words get lost in translation between black people of different cultures, just thought I'd point that out

I've been to Brazil, and people there take great pride in their black heritage. It's interesting to see that even individuals who appear very fair-skinned often identify as black.

Thanks! As a Brazilian I feel seen by this comment. It certainly is true, because in Brazil many of the people who self identify as black are way more mixed looking than these Cabo Verdans. We don't use being mixed as an excuse to deny being black or of African descent.

Great job, Willie! These women are truly beautiful. While living in Florida, I had the opportunity to meet a Cape Verdean woman. Unfortunately, she held an unfavorable attitude towards Black individuals, which was quite off-putting. Thank you for clarifying things.

Im cape verdean im light skinned and im 100% black. Cape verdeans who tell themselves that they are not black are completely lost. But its not just a intern problem is also extern, a lot of other africains dont see us as africains as well .But im glad people like you are doing a good job showing our country and telling our story the right way. The people in the video do not represent all Cape Verdeans. These are complicated questions not sure if these were the right questions to ask, but i think they did a good job answer the questions the best they could despite their young ages. Surprisingly, the oldest woman is the one who said the most stupid things. But anyway hope you doing more videos in Santiago and if possible going to a few others cape verdeans Islands.
